Tonal | Android, Go backend, more | SF, NYC, Toronto, Austin, LA https://www.tonal.com/ Tonal is the world's smartest home gym. It's a single device that mounts to your wall, has a giant screen (powered by Android), and uses an electromagnetic motor to provide up to 200lbs of resistance. It's genuinely one of the most incredible new consumer products on sale today. It works phenomenally well and we're just beginning to tap into the full potential of the hardware.

We're an engineer-founded company so strong engineering is at the roots of everything we do. I'm the engineering manager for the Android team. We work on everything you would touch and interact with on Tonal's screen.

I personally exclusively work out on Tonal and I'm stronger than I have ever been before. It's truly incredible what it's capable of.

We're hiring passionate product-minded Android engineers as well as nearly every other discipline (backend, data science, computer vision, dev ops, media streaming, iOS, Flutter (for our mobile app), and more).

We have many open positions across the company. It's an extremely exciting time to join the company.

We wanted to leverage our existing infra to have a consistent experience between native and RN screens. For example, you want to have the same network cache.

You are comparing the wrong numbers. We had 120,000 lines of RN code but RN only accounted for 10-20% of our mobile engineering.

The vast majority of the 100 always have been and are still Android and iOS devs. React Native never made up more than 10-20% of our mobile engineers and many of them came from Android or iOS backgrounds.

Author of Lottie Android here. The bodymovin to avd plugin is extremely beta and only supports a sublet of after effects features and none of the lottie features such as manually setting progress or dynamic properties.

We have actually be using an internal navigation framework that is unfortunately quite tightly coupled to our app. It's been working very week for us which is why we decided to make an open source "clone" of it. Our original intention was to migrate our internal navigation library over to the open source clone we made. However, with the realities of life, we haven't had the time to actually do that yet which is why we haven't been maintaining it.

Like Leland said above, we're still working hard and making exciting progress on React Native but we continue to invest in native platforms as well and product teams make a case by case decision on which one to use.

Hope that clarifies things a bit :)

The performance does definitely depend on the complexity of the animation. Small icons like the hamburger menu, wish list heart, hamburger arrow, etc run at 60fps. Even the main Lottie logo (http://airbnb.design/lottie/) that has pretty complex trim paths renders at ~60fps.

Masks and mattes are the feature that incur the largest performance hit because they require allocating a bitmap (8 bit for mattes and 32 bit for masks), rendering to them, then drawing them back to the canvas.

If there are no masks or mattes, the animation is drawn directly to the canvas and no bitmap allocations are necessary.

If there is a matte, an 8 bit bitmap will be created and if there is a mask, a 32 bit bitmap will be created and drawn to.

An animation can only be at one stage at a time but you can easily create multiple animations. If you want to have several copies of the same animation, there is a composition caching option that will prevent you from having to deserialize and parse the composition again.
