The risk for Central Banks holding their own bullion is low, away from the almighty Dollar, and Gold has never ceased to hold value, while Silver is actually useful but seriously overbought.

We're actually paying a premium for risk-averseness in the very nature of Gold, an asset that produces no dividends other than holding its own intrinsic value.

This time the bullish-on-Gold news outlets are right: there are fundamentals driving the madness that is the Market.

Something about Japanese rice futures candlestick school of days past predicting sell-off after 8 to 10 sucessive record highs...

Summing it up, the volatility specially of Gold (Silver is a bubble may I remind you) doesn't discount the possibility of an overall upward trend of years for Gold and a respectable USD$4000 for the spot troy ounce does not seem crazy at all, as momentum builds for regime change in Iran.

It's a plain analysis. Trump may not TACO on this and after hell on Earth is unleashed, Gold will actually see action to unprecedented levels. Maybe. Maybe not, but USD$4000? I doubt very much it would break through that support level.

C is immensely powerful, portable and probably as fast as you can go without hand-coding in the architecture-specific assembly. Most of the world's information systems (our cyberstructure) rely directly or indirectly on C. And don't get me wrong, I'm a great enthusiast of the idea of sticking to memory-safe languages like Rust from now on.

The hard truth is will live with legacy C code, period. Pizlo's heroic effort bridges the gap so to speak, it kind of sandboxes userspace C in a way that inherently adds memory safety to legacy code. There are only a few corner cases now that can't be bothered by any slow-down vis-a-vis unsafe C, and the great majority of code across every industry would benefit much more from the reduced surface of exposure.

So I get the data back from the Batch API and start playing around with it, and the big thing I find, and this will probably come as no surprise to anyone, is that the AI hype train is currently at its highest point on Hacker News since the start of 2019.

@zachperkel while a train is stimulative of impressions of something growing over time, in perspective, such as the "Trump Train", I'm pretty sure you meant trend? As in the statistical meaning of trend, a pattern in data?

AI hype is driven by financial markets as any other financial craze since the Tulip Mania. Is this an opinion, or a historical fact? This is a wonderful idea, but while I appreciate the venerable Tesseract I also think it's time to move on.

I personally use PaddlePaddle and have way better results to correct with LLMs.

With PPOCRv3 I wrote a custom Python implementation to cut books at word-level by playing with whitespace thresholds. It works great for the kind of typesetting found generally on books, with predictable whitespace threshold between words. This is all needed because PPOCRv3 is restricted to 320 x 240 pixels if I recall correctly and produces garbage if you downsample a big image and make a pass.

Later on I converted the Python code for working with the Rockchip RK3399Pro NPU, that is, to C. It works wonderfully. I used PaddleOCR2Pytorch to convert the models to rknn-api first and wrote the C implementation that cuts words on top of the rknn-api.

But with PPOCRv4 I think this isn't even needed, it's a newer architecture and I don't think it is bounded by pixel size restriction. That is, it will work "out of the box" so to speak. With the caveat that PPOCRv3 detection always worked better for me, PPOCRv4 detection model gave me big headaches.

While that's a fair point, I can't update the original comment anymore to make clear that I was discussing intrinsic value. I'm always on a haste to be honest.

It's value easily eroded by High-altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) so none on times of war, whereas the Internet was created to be resilient even in war, and I see value in the "cloud" running on diffuse infrastructure instead of corporate infrastructure.

EDIT: The global Internet I mean. Assuming HEMP doesn't hit everywhere at once, just the USA, for (unfortunate) example.
