I've often wondered why Discord is the only major platform client that provides an option to play gifs only on mouseover. It's incredibly effective at solving for the problem you describe.

You didn't mention your distro, which I think is very relevant when discussing upgrade failures and GPU issues.
Two reasons I can think of: 1) It involves Drew DeVault who isn't well liked on HN, and 2) the title implies Redis changed its name which it didn't.

I would indeed expect a community-run project to have been better (at evaluating the trade-offs of access logging [which occurs on every other web property F-Droid users utilize]). If only because there would have been more than one voice that mattered, and thus consensus would be required rather than unilateral dictation.

I'm talking literally just access logging though. Expecting even an individual, let alone a business, to run a publicly accessible web service without any form of access logging is just absurd IMO.
I'd expect privacy-inclined people to care vastly more about detecting and tracing indicators of compromise or similar over avoiding access logging on the open internet.

I briefly joined some F-Droid Dev rooms in hopes of helping with their speed/capacity issues by chasing some CDN sponsorships or expanding the mirror list, however the possibility that any commercial provider or user-provided mirror might have access logs enabled was enough to end the conversation. I 180'd after that. Never was a community-run project IME.

I believe so, but have recently stumbled upon Netdata which scratches the "I don't want to maintain an entire monitoring stack for these few boxes" kind of itch. Need to work with it some more to nail down the trade-offs.

In addition to the rules being applied fairly indiscriminately, "past" is doing some pretty heaving lifting here. Last I knew six months was the most recent it could have been used if you were extremely lucky/valuable.
There's a reason guides like this are a dime a dozen - there is no way to generalize server configuration this broadly.
But as long as we're doing it anyway - the only thing that locking the root account gets you is assurance that if you ever bork the user you created in this guide (or sudo functionality as a whole) you'll have no way to recover without booting into another environment.
Perhaps one ought not take sysadmin advice from a blog post with a first sentence that reads "I’m not a sysadmin, and I don’t want to be".
