I'll copy a response that I wrote elsewhere.

One issue that a lot of trans supporters don't realize is that similarly to how trans people could be offended when they are referred to by a gender not of their choice, so to could some speakers be offended if they are forced to refer to a person as a gender not of their (the speaker) choice.

This may be easier to understand by using a comparison. When I talk about the Muslim prophet I say Muhammad. However, many Muslims would say Muhammad pbuh (peace be upon him). This isn't that problematic, but let's say they the term was Muhammad ttp (the true prophet). Now I as a non Muslim believer would never use ttp because that would be insulting for whoever I believe in. If SE required that whenever I mention Muhammad that I append ttp, I would refuse as it would be extremely offensive to me.

Similarly by referring to a person with XX chromosomes [1] as she, is offensive to people who believe that genders cannot change. A reasonable compromise would be to let whoever is righting chose what they want, or even allow gender neutral pronouns. But what SE chose to do was to say that people who believe that XY is a guy are wrong and deserve no respect for their beliefs.

[1] someone corrected me and pointed out that there is a rare genetic condition where someone could have XX chromosomes but have many other male characteristics. So I would like to correct myself and say that for certain rare genetic conditions, I wouldn't mind being corrected. But for the vast majority of transgenders who are genetically similar to either males or females the above holds.

I tried to subscribe for updates but it required me to "prove that I am a human". I could not see any captcha or any other similar thing and it would not allow me to submit the form. I'm using Firefox focus on Android

BTW, there is nothing wrong with intending to advertise. Op (and I) are looking for a call recording app, and you know if one that you can (hopefully) recommend. The fact that you profit if we use it doesn't make your suggestion that much worse

many times CEOs cannot sell stock because doing so might signal to others that something bad is going to happen at that company. I recall a story of a company that was doing well, had customers, and good stock. then suddenly overnight the stock tanked. after researching for a while they found out what the cause was. one of the c-level employees / founder wanted to pay for his daughters wedding so he sold some stock. due to that some algo traders had programmed to sell stock if the founder sells. other algo traders programmed only to sell if both the founder and some other traders sell. well, this spiraled out of control until the market closed for the night.

one thing that I love about SE is that everyone is very professional. almost all answers are either sourced or can easily be seen to be correct. what I am worried is that if a lot of the normal mods quit and our replaced with new mods, who may be more political, SE will turn into Reddit where leftist politics prevail in all of the major subreddits and most responses to factual questions consist of options or unsourced "facts". if that ever becomes the case then I will be sad. although, when seeing how the admins of Reddit act, I'm guessing that acting like they do is good for business.

the legislation would prohibit hotels and other lodging providers from advertising room rates that do not include all mandatory charges other than government taxes and fees

so close, but what does "fees" include? If that legislation required them to include tax _then_ I would be excited

I hear a lot about the prisoner organ harvesting in China, but something seems off. There are more that 1m prisoners in China. About 7,000 people on the organ donor list die each year. I would think that if the organ harvesting was as real as the news makes it seem, it would be common for people on the donor list to go to China and get the surgery. I am pretty confident that using the dark web and Bitcoin I could buy drugs, wives, weapons and other illegal products. Yet I can't see how to buy organs. My guess is because the organ harvesting is much less common than the news makes it appear.

(PS, just in case someone reads this wrong, I don't think it is good that China does any amount of forced organ harvesting.)

Then the business could say that they don't serve people who advocate for illegal activity. If they also don't want to serve dinner people who advocate for legal activity, then they should be transparent about it

With regard to elevators on Shabbat, you have to understand what the prohibition is in order to understand the workaround. There is no prohibition towards using elevators on Shabbat, not is there a prohibition towards going from floor to floor quickly. However, there is a prohibit towards pressing normal electrical buttons. Therefore, using an elevator that is programmed to stop on every floor is not dishonest. It avoids the narrow prohibition of pressing normal electric buttons.

Do you think that there is a point in having boarders between countries? If so how should they be enforced? If a 17 year "child" crosses the boarder should they be detained (ie. kept in prison until deportation) or should they be allowed to walk free in the US. If a child and parent both crossed the border should only the parents be detained leaving the child to fend for itself in America? Should they be detained in the same cell? ie keep children detained with adult.

I agree that keeping children in cages is not good, but there are solutions. If ice had a bigger budget maybe it could have more beds, larger cells, better food. I don't see how removing enforcement is a solution.

The announcement of the Friday event does an injustice to Marvin Minsky:

“deceased AI ‘pioneer’ Marvin Minsky (who is accused of assaulting one of Epstein’s victims [2])”

The injustice is in the word “assaulting”. The term “sexual assault” is so vague and slippery that it facilitates accusation inflation: taking claims that someone did X and leading people to think of it as Y, which is much worse than X.

The accusation quoted is a clear example of inflation. The reference reports the claim that Minsky had sex with one of Epstein’s harem. (See https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/9/20798900/marvin-minsky-jef...) Let’s presume that was true (I see no reason to disbelieve it).

The word “assaulting” presumes that he applied force or violence, in some unspecified way, but the article itself says no such thing. Only that they had sex.

We can imagine many scenarios, but the most plausible scenario is that she presented herself to him as entirely willing. Assuming she was being coerced by Epstein, he would have had every reason to tell her to conceal that from most of his associates.

I’ve concluded from various examples of accusation inflation that it is absolutely wrong to use the term “sexual assault” in an accusation.

Whatever conduct you want to criticize, you should describe it with a specific term that avoids moral vagueness about the nature of the criticism.

I had to pay. I have lived abroad for several decades and when I decided to do some independent contracting I realized that now I have to pay social security. Also, while I generally pay more taxes than an American, every once in a while there is a tax break that I get that Americans don't. In that case I have to pay that amount to the US.

I wonder if any of the Google apps will support a dark mode. Maps / Gmail are harder to use with all of the white

I waited a long time for this phone. I've been looking for an easy to repair, future proofed phone for quite some time. The only problem is that the screen size is 5.65" and that is just too big for me. I may end up getting it due to all of the other features, but I don't think so. My hands are just to small.
