I -have- built something like this for the TV using NFC cards, which was a great first-electronics-project for myself. That said, the most frustrating part is not the actual hardware itself but getting whatever streamer you're using to play the content you want. For example, this project required the author to WireShark and reverse engineer how Chromecast managed things.

If you do go down this route, I found that Plex offered the best deep-linking functionality and would wrap all of your content with that... but it was still somewhat unreliable.

Definitely indie. It was a solo project until launch.

To this point, I've been using Qobuz as an alternative and it's recommendation engine is laughably bad, but the experience is somehow better. I'll get the most random songs pop up in the list, and sometimes it's a very pleasant surprise.

In the world of music discovery a bad recommendation engine is maybe better than a hyper-fine-tuned one.

I've been working on a small side project on-and-off for the last year and some. The state-of-the-art decisions I made last year are already dead. There's a new version of everything, and everything was a breaking change, nothing is backwards compatible.

How do people live like this?

Claude 3.5 is a trusted developer partner that will work with you and outline what it’s thinking. It’s not always right but because it outlines its reasoning you too can reason about the problem and catch it.

ChatGPT, for me, was a stack overflow solution dump. It gives me an answer that probably could work but it’s difficult for me to reason about why I want to do it that way.

Truthfully this probably boils down to prompting but Claude’s out of the box experience is fantastic for development. Ultimately I just want to code, not be a prompt wizard.

Since a lot of people don't remember / haven't played the game, here are the details that can help you:

- You can determine drunken state using the game's front-end API. They call debuffs/buffs 'auras' and you can match it against a specific set of drunken aura ids. - The game will randomly add Hs and iirc the word "hic" to a sentence in order to emulate drunkenness.

Personally, I like the checksum solution the best -- don't even try to be smart, just validate the integrity of the message. This also solves issues where your message gets truncated, or other problems arise. They also likely had to break up their messages across multiple chat messages (there's chat limit) so a checksum goes a long way here.

This is the cleanest solution, IMO, rather than having to check each word/key/whatever of your protocol.

Some of the most important problems in the world are solved by a thousand "tiny" companies. Sure, they didn't look attractive from an investor's standpoint (most live by the 'high risk = high reward' approach), but that does not mean they are not important.

The answer to the question is "because we also use cameras". That said, if this tech was made smaller and didn't give off cat-collar vibes, people might consider it.

It's /possible/ that truckers are widely unvaccinated (perhaps they all subscribe to the same train of thought), but it's unlikely.

Sure, no disagreement there. I’m not arguing against bikes but we should also be heavily investing in other forms of mass transit.

You bike in during the dead of winter, and that’s amazing. But how long is your bike ride in? How far out of the city do you live? Would you still do it if your commute was double?

Additionally, in Ottawa, many people live far out of the city and commute in via the highway for 30-40 minutes by car because it’s more affordable than living in the city. The bike ride is well over two hours. They will need other solutions as well.

It’s definitely not impossible, but it’s riskier.

My point is that we default to easy and comfortable when given a choice, and cycling in -42 is neither. We won’t see mass adoption of cycling in these areas, regardless of infrastructure, unless we forced people to do it... and I don’t think pushing the majority of people towards enduring that kind of weather is something we should do, when there are alternatives.

It’s a regional statement, not disconnected.

The reality is that many people in North American live far from their workplaces and some of us live in areas of extreme cold. This is where 15m of exposed skin can result in frostbite. We bundle up, but by cycling we’ve turned the commute into an unnecessarily dangerous adventure.

The same applies to cities further south: a non trivial amount of days are extremely hot and you’re risking heat strokes.

Edit: don’t get me wrong. Bike infrastructure is awesome and I wish there were less cars on the roads, etc. We just have very different variables to play with so we need to come up with different distributions of mass transit vs personal transportation. Comfort is important!

It's just surface level makeup.

They detect blemishes and apply a bit of makeup to hide it. I don't know what "anti-aging ingredients" they include, but presumably nothing different than off-the-shelf makeup products.

I started by reading this as the tale of one person's tumultuous trading history... which made me really concerned for this person's money.

My take on this is that they're aiming to have people experiment with the two little areas rather than have everyone immediately "letterbox" it away. (Although to be honest it's a little baffling since I think it detracts from the phone, especially when playing games or watching videos).

If you want to make a fair comparison, that should be compared to all the things you didn't find because useless ads took up your time and mental space.

I understand your point here. But to clarify, if I were to add up the seconds/minutes of time I lose to ads over the course of a month (for example), I don't think I'd spend that regained time on product hunting. My point was less "I save so much time via ads" but more "I don't want to shop." I view it as a time saver (at the expense of perhaps finding "the perfect item") rather than as purely a nuisance. That said, I definitely prefer content without ads.

I /technically/ opt-in by not running ad-block on my laptop, so I guess that's true.

From my perspective, I've found various things via advertising that I would have never come across by other means.

A lot of people argue that "you'll just search for what you want" except I'm tired of searching for "shirt" and then scrolling for days looking for something that may work. Every once in a while I'm hit with a really good ad, and I'll click it, and maybe even buy.

Large enough sample to be ultra conclusive? Not really, but I think it gives you a taste for the data and it's unlikely that tech interns /do/ make more than most, but it's not really surprising.
