Our javascript is super small in terms of loading the ad, and we don't allow advertisers to add their own JS. So it shouldn't effect performance at all.

I think it's a lesson that the entire tech community is learning slowly (and marginalized people have been shouting about for years, to their credit).

I have the same issue with Quora. Makes me sad every time I go there and find useful info, but feel pushed away. Dropbox also does similar -- in fact they broke all their old direct public links, so that you can use their new "sharing" dialog, so that they can spam the recipient to get a Dropbox account. Sigh.

This makes me sad. We based our Ethical Advertising concept that we're doing on Read the Docs (http://docs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ethical-advertising.htm...) on their inspiration.

We don't have nearly as much mobile traffic (only ~6%), so hopefully we will be able to make it work, but this doesn't fill me with confidence.

Yea, I mention commonmark in the post, and referred to it in the "standard that was used" part -- commonmark is great, but wasn't widely adopted.
