There are different grades of "fun". You can do silly things at work, name your servers bob and lola, while still serve the functionality and needs of your customers. But hiring an artist to draw the server as ninjas because "they protect our customers"? What kind of value does that bring? And then you write a blog post about it? Seriously?

Knowing when the fun needs to stop is a way to create valuable things in society. I prefer that, compared to living in world where the state of software is so dire because developers are overgrown kids that spend time writing blog posts about how they named their server pikachu because "pikachu is soooooo cute!!!1111"

The wrong in this, is the extent they went to with this. I mean, name your servers whatever you want, but hiring an artist to draw the servers personalities and then writing a blog post about this? Like common, that's something a child would do about their favorite toy. At some point, people need to grow up.

And I guess the other "wrong with it" is the fact that it just wastes human potential. Build robust software and take pride in this, not it naming your servers bob and lola.

I bet you had to solve math equations and prove math stuff to get your degree, am I right? Now imagine I tell you that you could have just prompted LLMs with “please solve the is and make no mistakes”, would you think you’d be able to get your math degree?

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s very easy to tell everyone “don’t read the code, just focus on architecture” when you have decades of experience behind your shoulders, where you HAD to read the code, iterate, learn from your mistakes, read code written by others, and actually writing and making stuff yourself to gain that experience and understand architecture.

How do you expect people to learn all this stuff that you know if don’t want them to actually do the work but instead “control the idea”, whatever this means? It’s just baffles me that people don’t see this.

I remember a time when we were told not to run obscure software from questionable websites on our computers. And yet, people are suddenly fully vibing with an uncontrollable character generating machine with who-knows-what-behind-the-scene harness. Crazy.

I don’t, nor I want to. If I’m forced to train my replacement by using these tools, I might as well enjoy the time it takes the agent to do work by doing something I like and enjoy in the meantime.

When I was working in a small company (3-4 devs), we used to build stuff that clients needed. We built billing systems, JS widgets (back when widgets were a thing), analytics, and full on CRM. As long as it helped our customers. We ran all this on VPSs.

When I joined big tech, I understood that most of work is going around and “proposing” solutions or “solving inter team blockers”. People who did the actual job, got very little recognition. People who did peacocking were promoted.

At that time I realized how fucked up corporate is.

Not saying this is a 1:1 parallel, or that writing is what makes you a good coder, but I do wonder - if you remove the entire process of making something, what is left there? Sure, people keep arguing that architecting or "managing" AI agents is the actual moat, but is this really? If you do not participate in the craft itself, how would you get better?

I mean, I have amazing ideas for wooded furniture I'd like to build. I doubt that if you give me an LLM connected to a router that I would be able to build something by "architecture, review, push back, and argue". I simply lack the knowledge to make something out of wood. And the only way to get this knowledge is to go and make something and not "architect, review, push back, and argue".

You need to use full isolated VM with its own kernel. But then again, I've read somewhere that this malware is also trying to escape the VM isolation as well...

Yeah, I agree, but then you are at the mercy of whatever vulnerability is found in the current version(s). It just feels like a lose-lose situation no matter what you do.
