You and I had similar difficulty yesterday vis-a-vis arbitrary downvoting. I was referring to a comment made at me regarding how HN comments are for correcting people who are wrong, and accompanying that is downvotes. Except for when "correction" has nothing to do with the downvote, or none is offered.

It doesn't matter. The conversation at HN is toxic. I've bitched enough. I was just reaching out for commiseration.

Yeah that's the consensus, and that's what it was meant to be, that's what it once was. However these days, especially in a community where only certain individuals can downvote, they become the only ones to control the discussion. What was supposed to encourage a higher level of discussion has instead created a community that is the exact opposite.

Who cares about my stupid comments, sure, I'm an idiot- I'll agree to that. Unfortunately, I see it happen all the time. The parent of this, for example, was downvoted immediately.

Everyone in this community is prepared to be corrected- the problem is when there's no correction offered. It's a community of suppression, and it's not hard to see.

I've found that this community is beyond unwelcoming, bordering on toxic. I no longer see the merit in contributing, and furthermore I find that reading these comment threads has become less and less valuable.

I've been blaming my hosting company, getting everyone in their support chain to take a crack at the issue. I always just assumed that gmail was the working side of the problem, not the problem itself.

I haven't used IRC since middle school, back when I was 31337. Way back from the days when there was a leading '3.'

It's great you mention 'being a prick,' because that's what I said out loud as I read your article. I was tickled by the fact that you mentioned it, so I do respect that you know your strengths.

This might work for you, and for the projects you work on, and I think it's not a bad recommendation for positions that need... that kind of stuff.

one of the best programmers i've ever worked with spent his time teaching himself php. he was a bright kid who made a stupid decision, but didnt let that stop him. we worked together for about 2 years and he ended up getting a couple great offers and now balls way, way harder than me. i have so much respect for him.

It's really sad to me how all of us in our industry are getting slapped across the face day in and day out about how unfairly, unequally and unjustly women are treated in our industry and peripheries.

You gents are too smart to still 'not get it.' I'm at the point where I see it as willful ignorance.

And I'm tired of all of it.

People expressing a fear that minorities are receiving unjust benefits are often racist?

This type of thinking in our industry needs to STOP. There is far too much evidence that women are treated like absolute shit pretty much across the board (don't bother pointing out your handful of CEOs and other execs, if you can't face this fact then you're part of the problem).

If it happens to women, it happens to others.

You sound like you've got some pretty sweet white, male privilege. If you aren't a member of that majority, well they've certainly got you on their side.

Cursors 12 years ago

Interesting CPU performance in Chrome on Ubuntu!

Relating to this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8471049 (Google chrome helper amok in OSX HN thread)

While playing Cursors my chrome CPU usage went through-the-roof! Just like OSX 60-80%+ CPU usage on that page. Side-by-side comparison with a mac at cursors.io had identical CPU (so may just be the load of the app).

Just did a side-by-side comparison with Mozilla in Ubuntu showed no higher than 15% for about 90 seconds, but actually ended up jumping to 100%

*Edit: The mozilla cpu jump was related to cursor hiding. Otherwise the crazy cpu usage is entirely gone. The issue persists in chrome.

i have been wrestling with this for weeks, both professionally and personally. I'm fairly certain that in this process/before we noticed the problem we burned up one of our machines.

The thing is, there's no flash involved. We've narrowed it down to css3 transitions running amok. In other cases we've poorly constructed JS loops causing problems.

Recently i've noticed it on everything (even gmail, drive and calendar) in chrome.

No problems elsewhere, although in a side-by-side comparison with mozilla showed mozilla nearing similar cpu usage (30-60%) but never sustained (lasting seconds)

Not sure if this helps anyone, or if this is just 'duh.' The css3 transitions being involved i have not read out in the wild, so i thought i'd toss that idea out.

You sound like a completely sane person.

The use (abuse) of substances is widespread among large swaths of the majority of mental illnesses. Associating the use of marijuana specifically with schizophrenia is absurd-- schizophrenics also abuse alcohol, does that mean wine causes schizophrenia?

I speak not only as a person with a mental health disorder (bipolar) but a member of a family with several actual schizophrenics.

Correlation is not causation. Downvote as you will.

Thank you, too. The patching process wasnt as much my concern as the other widespread, clever exploits that really experienced bash dudes are finding.

Like we discussed, my concern is client sites hosted on a server I pay to be maintained... I did email the provider, and at the time was satisfied with their response so thats good.

So I really apprecuate all the input. I feel okay, though some funny behavior on old, stable sites makes me worry.

Thank you for your time.

I give myself a C- and will reevaluate.p

Thank you as well. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

We don't run cgi scripts, and we seem to be predominantly in the "probably safe" category. That said, this is the reaponse I expected. I've applied some patching on our machines (read: that first one that didnt fix a lot of vulerabilities) and I'm sure the other guys have, too.

It has just been one of those launch months where even pooping feels like burning time and money.

Seems like somebody is going to be changing gears today. Thank you.

Your attitude continues to be less than stellar. You act like a babe in the woods who has no frame of reference and only innocently asks questions to further educate yourself. From my perspective, you condescend, and continue to do so. You are a member of society, presumably older than sixteen, and so you very well know how pointed this line of questioning can be.

Perhaps my uncalled-for overreaction is due to the loss I've experienced at the cost of addiction, from my own mistakes and mistakes made around me. For me there has been a significant loss of life both in my immediate family and friends.

HN is a pretty weird place to ask these questions, and I understand perfectly well what flippant means- thanks for not being dismissive or condescending.

I admit I may overreact, but only because I find your questions- especially the way you responded to be- to me disingenuous.

Though I should never discourage someone from learning, and judging by my reaction i see why anonymity and text are the right place.

(i can tell that i overreacted, and responded emotionally and strangely. I am bipolar on top of addiction issues and reading this post back to myself it's apparent. I'm being an ass. I'm leaving my post because maybe my broken train of thought can be a bit of a learning experience? i'm sorry i am so rude.)

It's not a flippant response, but I would certainly consider yours to be. You have never suffered from addiction, therefore your frame of reference is skewed, but forgivable.

Having never suffered addiction you physically and psychologically cannot understand the affliction. It controls your thoughts, your body, your actions and decisions. It has costs well beyond every night drinking- costs paid in broken marriages, lost friendships and worse.

Pointing out that you have never suffered from addiction is not flippant. It is in response to a lot of what you have already written. You don't know the pain of which you are so dismissive, far apart from the 'coldness' of text. You express yourself and your understanding very well, and your words are sharp.

Absolutely. I have taken the same list of meds as the post above yours, and thankfully as he did I have found the right medicine for me. I perceive the tone of the post above yours to be condescending, as if my experience is trumped by his life experience (which, I assure you, isn't unique to his bipolar).

I described my experience with lithium, and while there were sedatives and antipsychotics that I was prescribed which had a far greater numbing effects, I was not speaking to them.

All of the medications I tried had different consequences, Lithium's were not the worst (Lamictals were the most interesting musically).

I am bipolar. What you describe is why it's a "hard sell" to patients with mood disorders.

Yes, others will point to the higher dose for psychiatric patients.

I would point to the soulless robot, the empty husk of a once vibrant, creative brain.

We are devs, and our brain is our livelihood. In me it killed my creativity and my passion. Not only did I not want to code anything new, I could not conceive of new things. I stopped improv jams on guitar, I could not write songs. I became wonderfully adept at doing scales. Scales over and over.

I'll take my mood disorder- because it comes WITH emotions.

This is just to give you a 'crazy person's' impression of Lithium. Your results may vary.
