I got a 23andme kit from work and I thought the results were interesting...it said that I'm 5x higher average risk for Colo-rectal cancer, and 17x higher average risk of developing gallstones...which interestingly enough my Grandpa had Colo-rectal cancer, and my mom had gallbladder surgery (and so did 3 of her sisters)...so my results were actually very interesting

I came across a USB thumb drive from when I was in highschool (freshmen), and I was embarrassed when I looked at it just recently...I was storing login credentials in a browser cookie, and not a session cookie, how insecure but I didn't know any better at the time...

I'd say the best thing to master is solving problems.

In the case of developers it may mean that you never become a master at programming, but what's more important: solving a problem or having elegant, well documented non-solutions?

Hackers make things work, and I think that's more important than being a "master" - I don't even like the word master, it almost feels egotistical.

If they make the menu hoverable (at least on desktop) then their other products are still only a click away.

It seems like backing up your media files to a Dropbox-like service instead of iCloud would solve the problem of being able to get your files from any device you want.

I'm not attached to any one device in particular because all of my content is stored on a third party that can be accessed from anywhere.

I could drop my Macbook Pro or iPhone 4 at any time and not feel like I'm missing something.

Good thing about Apple products is that they last awhile, my Macbook Pro is now 3 years old, and my iPhone 4 is 2 years old, and I haven't had any issues and don't plan on upgrading them until they break.

It sounds like they've found a legal way of getting free work completed.

Using your web design/development experience, start a blog relating to reviewing tile quality, articles about color suggestions based on room color or size, etc.

Find out what you can from your dad about best practices in installation and maintenance on tile and other options for floorting, etc. and offer advice to do-it-yourselfers.

Start an email newsletter, slowly, slowly build up an audience, and offer a way for potential customers to contact you for work.

After building up a blog, you can also look to use websites like ServiceMagic (now HomeAdvisor) to find projects. My dad has used this site many times to hire contractors and has always had a good experience.

Technology blogs with affiliate links and/or adsense are known to have much lower conversion rates than average because tech savvy people tend to be more blind to ads (and many even use adblockers), and these users are typically aware that these programs exist.

I know I for one always hover over links before I click on them to see if they're affiliate links, and I can't remember the last time I clicked on an ad on Google or elsewhere.

Way too involved in your team's day-to-day- I'd say that's a pretty big issue. When you hire a designer to design, and you're telling them where to place things and what they should look like when you yourself have no background in design, that's a sure-fire way to bring a company down

I don't think that's what the author is saying..I think he's literally saying the email will be deleted on the server if the time expiration occurs, unless the user specifically says to store it anyway (even after expiration). This would clear your inbox for things like invites to parties which have past without the need to manually delete them.

And those sites became large because people could get them up and running quickly which is what made PHP a popular language. Hobbyist programmers made it what it is, and many of those hobbyist programmers went on to build big companies... Mark Zuckerberg, Matt Mullenweg, just to name a few.

So if you terminate an instance on AWS you automatically lose your data? How does that work? I've never used AWS, I usually self host or use 1and1 VPS

Plus surgeons deal with death on a more frequent basis than almost anyone else, if anything they're more likely to become numb to this, therefore becoming less emotional. Maybe this article is referring people who are still studying/in medical school whose goal it is to one day help people.

I would say that an even larger part of the HN community is lurkers. Those that read the articles, comments and upvote, but don't actively participate in discussions.

I've been lurking on HN for 4+ years, and I rarely ever contributed comments, mostly just read articles and read the comments to see others opinions.

Don't think this is true? Take a look at how many comments are left on articles on the front page, then if you were lucky enough to reach the front page of HN, take a look at your analytics software. You'll see something like 20k visits in a short period of time, there's no where near that number of comments. Most people passively participate in this community.
