WaPo, NYT, et. al. are tied to DOD and the intel community. They are the anonymous sources that provide many of their story ideas as well as quotes and sourcing. That doesn't come for free.

This isn't a theory: either that paper is right, or the US taxpayer is being defrauded by DOE to develop tech based off junk science. One of those things is actually true. Do you pay US taxes?

It means the guys a Lawrence Livermore are investing a LOT of money into technology that is based on physics which directly contradicts Einstein's general relativity, the best tested theory humans have. In my academic experience, government funders are unbelievably risk-averse, and I bet the ones who run major DOE labs are too. They know that equation is actually right, or are extremely certain that this thing will work even without a perfect understanding of it, or they wouldn't invest the cash. More fun facts: that equation contains a term that Jack Sarfatti has introduced (check citation 29 and the first paragraph of page.3). Jack Sarfatti is a UFO researcher, he studies UFOs seriously and writes physics papers on how he thinks they work. So DOE is pumping serious money into tech based off actual UFO science, which contradicts Einstein. Does this mean aliens are real? No. It does looks very suspicious though.

I posted this once before and it got no traction. I decided this time to make the title more descriptive of what is actually afoot here. I'd like people to note the level of engineering in this reactor concept demonstrates a long term commitment of serious resources by LLNL to a modified Einstein field equation (equation 15 in the paper), which states that electromagnetism can affect the curvature of spacetime under certain conditions. Given that the method of operation for the reactor explicitly requires these effects, I also believe they must be substantial in magnitude and that they have actually demonstrated this experimentally to justify this level of commitment. I personally think this paper is a decade or more of work by LLNL. I hope this gets looked at this time, please upvote if you think this is interesting. I look forward to hearing everyone's take on this.

I have another question: why does a PM make more than a dev? My wife made that jump and her salary went up 50%. She literally just goes to meetings and talks now, yet she makes more than her old job that required real skills. Am I the only person who finds this perverse?

I also moved to Germany and bailed after 6 months. Unlike this article, I didn't care about the people or language, I was there to make some money and move on, so it wasn't a place I wanted to integrate into to begin with. The people in Germany, on average, don't like foreigners and don't want them around. That's true in Europe in general and definitely true for Germany, so I'm not sure what the article's author is really surprised at. That said, what made me move after such a short time though is that I'm 100% sure the same bunch of old money that supported the Nazis is still there today running things. Once you meet a few of the rich ones and see how arrogant and stupid they are, you realize immediately that their society is structured so that these people will remain on top no matter what. And from this fact you know all you need to about who you are really working for, and by extension, who their grandparents supported.

A lot of people have remarked that the government couldn't keep a secret this big for so long. This is correct but misses the point that this secret wasn't kept. I've heard this story multiple times in my life, it's been a staple of US lore for decades and numerous whistleblowers have come forward in the past to retell it. All have been discredited and often smeared as nuts and the media has reported as much and moved on. If this really is true and they really do have a massive disinfo campaign to protect it, we have no choice but to admit that they have never kept a lid on this through secrecy, they have done it through character assassination and control of the media narrative, turning anyone who speaks up into a lunatic off his meds, a liar, and so on, and then moving the public's eye onto something else. That this strategy has worked so effectively and for so long is scarier than aliens, IMO.

There is the fact that Grusch gave sworn testimony to congress on it, he's going to prison for perjury if he's lying. Doesn't prove it, but it's more than just saying it in an interview.

Assuming this is legit, what makes you believe they understand anything about this tech? They might literally have been scratching their heads all this time with this stuff. We might simply not understand the physics by which it operates and have no ability to do anything with it except dust it off periodically and let another team of eggheads strike out. I can't think of any major technology we currently have which doesn't have a totally legit origin story and which the prevailing scientific and engineering ability of the time didn't enable, so I doubt any real advances have ever come out of this.

It's not a secret though. Throughout my life I have heard this same story, from lots of people, though it has always been lore and they usually want to know your take on it. Many people will tell you they believe it if they trust you. There have been whistleblowers on this before as well, and each has been discredited and their claims denied, often with implication that they are crazy. The establishment line has always been that if you are into this, you must also be a nut, and so on. I don't find it too hard to believe that the government made a decision to just deny the truth and slander those who spoke it, rather than try to contain it. That's really their only move for a secret too big to keep.

Yeah, there are sites where these are being looked into. I'm not sure its the same thing you mean, but you can bet there are plenty of eager guys out there making sure these cams aren't going to waste.

I don't see the point of this. Airtable sucks at anything except providing a managed database you can store a small amount of data in for free. If you have to do the hosting yourself, just choose postgres.

If this article is accurate, it paints a bleak picture. I don't much care about the not working part, if you are smart enough to figure out how not to work and get by, you deserve it. The part where these guys are on a screen all day long is really bad though. I mean, you have to go out and try to have friends or get a girl, sitting at home on a server all day doesn't fill that need. I am worried this is actually making a vast psychologically damaged class of people.

Since Washington's only response to drug problems has been to try to literally destroy everyone involved, this sounds like a massive improvement in public policy to me. Seriously though, this is a white person's problem and they aren't going to attack the white community like they did the black community during the crack epidemic. But they don't know how to do anything actually helpful either (new skills are hard for the elderly I hear), so they just sit there and stare at it. I just don't see the zeal to lock these people in cages forever that I'm used to. Funny how that works.

In Germany it is straight up illegal to display nazi symbols, do their salute, or even advocate their beliefs, isn't it? I was told as much by quite a few Germans at least.

That said, my problem with the censorship approach is that these groups appeal to actual problems within society and individuals, and by censoring them, none of that goes away. If anything, I think they just get pushed underground and the real issues that allow them to successfully recruit are still there, and they just do it quietly, which is why the local motorcycle club is full of fucking nazis, like it or not. The only way to stop these groups is to remove the fuel, which implies making changes to society itself to reduce the number of people who are in poor circumstances and might find a voice telling them it is the immigrants/jews/brown people who are to blame for their personal sense of injustice. Officially censoring also gives an anti-establishment sheen to them that definitely appeals to some.

Have lived in the EU and they definitely have a stronger concept of censorship there. You honestly don't have a right to say anything you want, especially if you are saying things to a large audience who might be incited. Most people I have met are quite happy that people such as nazis are censored and cannot spread hate. Given their history, that makes some sense, but I honestly get the feeling they focus too much on appearances and not on trying to actually undermine these groups and interfere with their recruiting. You will find plenty of such people in working class bars around the continent, but as long as they are not making public shows and speeches, the populace seems to ignore them.

Nothing can beat a MacBook You can't upgrade the RAM, it has a weird processor that tons of code won't run on, and it starts at $2K. I have the latest one sitting on my desk right now from my work and it is a useless brick that I can't do any actual work on because so much code we use simply won't compile on it. I use a mini from 2018 for actual work and the macbook runs teams and zoom. Complete joke of a computer.

Maybe I misunderstood what you wrote, but you feel the traffic is actually originating from your desktop? I am completely unaware how someone could get 2 IP addresses for your desktop without that showing up somewhere on the box (agreed, you should have found it with the tools you ran). I still think wipe and wait, but this seems like you got seriously hacked. Good luck.

How is your desktop connected to the switch (ethernet or wifi)? If the computer is wired, maybe you have a virus on it and that is somehow using the wifi to get another IP? I would suggest you backup your user data and wipe/restore the desktop. If it comes back after that, I'd bet someone has cracked your wifi password and is getting in that way, or some other device on the network is the culprit and reinfecting your desktop.

GDPR doesn't just cover personal info, it also forbids tracking without consent, which includes cookies and other means. This is just a technical trick to track someone sans cookie, so I'm 100% certain they will fine anyone doing it unless they get consent.

This is a form of data collection and tracking that is definitely against GDPR unless the user is informed of it and consents to it. As it stands, there is no such notification or consent. IANAL but I strongly suspect will get you fined in the EU.

You should get the straight facts on that kid and what he did and confront the school over it. They obviously failed across the board with him and probably someone got hurt for him to get time. They could have done things to correct his behavior, instead they punished you for lashing out against his abuse. This needs to show up when people search that school so other parents know how they really are and avoid sending their kids there.

Once you know how to program picking up a new language is just a matter of doing a project or two in it. Just go see what jobs are interesting to you and learn the language/framework they want over a weekend or two.

I look angry most of the time and concentrating makes it much worse, so yes. That said, I'm a total introvert and very misanthropic in my outlook, so I actively cultivate the pissed look, it keeps people away and that's exactly what I'm trying to accomplish with it.
