Do you have two or more kids? I say it’s different. For people with more kids, a single child seems like a walk in the park. Because in the worst case at least one parent is "free". With two or more kids the default is being fully occupied or if one partner takes all of them for the other to have free time, it’s insanely draining and the other partner feels almost pressure to make the sacrifice worth it.

This of course being said about the situation without any parents around. The step from two to three is worse for car/transportation and hotel room but I think it’s not nearly as hard as from one to two.

What you also have to consider: You’re gonna have bad nights. With one kid only, it’s fine. You can recover. With two, you simple don’t have room for that. The bad nights will eat you up.

Several people at work, none use OpenClaw, had their limits jump immediately to 100%.

This is a reason to seriously consider changing providers.

Finally someone that says it. I think it’s a multi-variable problem as it handles languages differently. Also working in legacy code can be worse more often than not.

Im working on some website and created some custom menu. Nothing fancy. AI got it done after some tries and I was happy as web development is not my area of expertise. After some time I realized the menu results to scrolling when it shouldn’t and wanted to make the parent container expand. This was impossible as the AI did a rather unusual implementation even for such a limited use case. Best part: my task now is impossible to solve with AI as it doesn’t really get its own code. I resulted to actually just looking into CSS and the docs and realized there is a MUCH simpler way to solve all of my issues.

I find this disrespectful by the author. I’m sure I’ve had colleagues at work that did this to me: throwing ai generated code at the reviewers with the mindset like "why should I look at it? That's what the reviewer does anyway".

You’re not alone! Also, I think that we just get older and learn slower. This, in combination with the lack of free time, makes me just worse at grinding leetcode. Also I’m just frustrated sometimes. I’m not dumb and a good worker, but other people that simply have a lot of free time get rewarded.

You have sources for the claim about well-being (asking explicitly about mental well-being and not just material well-being) being more influenced by socioeconomic status and not so much by parental absence?

For some I feel sorry. For others I don’t. The lower ranks shouldn’t complain as much as it feels like…in the end they just act like their superiors: They bite their tongue because of money. CEOs do it. I’m sure some align with the current administration‘s values, but not all. They do it cus they are afraid of fighting and losing profit. So are the software engineers. How many people do I know that cannot imagine life with a salary lower than 200k?

I agree with you. Haven’t had very bad experience with service. I for example am perfectly ok with flagging down a waiter to order extra drinks. The US make me feel uncomfortable with their almost obnoxious wait staff asking you 100 times if everything is ok…but hell breaks loose if you’re done with your meal and you just wanna sit with your buddies and have one more drink or finish your beer. Then wait staff manages to make you feel very uncomfortable in my opinion. Much worse than default German service.

Personal anecdote: A relative of mine has his own business that covers all sorts of IT stuff. He has a starlink running permanently as a backup because a couple of times a year his fiber experiences some downtime.

And some people who think he really is a racist from Apartheid Sourh Africa cannot understand how still a big part of technologists are overlooking that fact. No way in hell he does not pay somewhere or someone to get to that level. Musk is no superhuman. He might brag about this with Rogan but to me this fact more than any other shows how delusional and unlikable he is nowadays.

Yup. It's not a fair game. Or at least it benefits young people or people with loose family ties. I had opportunities there but being from another continent, seeing my family once a year wasn't enough. With kids and a significant other that has even stronger ties to their family, it is impossible. I think it wouldn't necessarily hurt the kids...but my partner wouldn't find work in the US and it would be a dent in their career.

Long story short like what others above say: If your team is good and your working conditions are good and you make good money in your country...maybe look at the bright side and not be envious of others.

I realized I make good money for here, have no management responsibility. Can work from home and basically as flexibly as I want to. All this ALREADY is a great gift. Don't need to dream of some FANG salary. I'm a big part of my kids' early lives instead of studying leet code questions.

A very good question. Switzerland? But I don't like their mentality too much. Maybe the east will rise. Maybe skip Europe and go to the US? I have no clear answer. My life will be ok. I'd be more worried about future generations.

This is a question I've been asking myself. I honestly don't know. The country feels...stuck. You want more wind turbines? Nimbys will block it. You want more infrastructure and build something? Someone's gonna find some rare protected lizard where you wanna build and this will take you years! You want to shrink the public broadcasting stations? Well there are pensions to be paid which is the biggest share of the cost so even if you shrink it you won't save much.

Personally, I'd start at digitalization and try to make processes more efficient. Think of software, only adding features but never thinking about cleaning up or refactoring might break your framework. In government, there was no cleanup. It grows monotonically and it feels like for every little thing ten Departments need to approve it. Government is a good example of parkinson's law. No one ever says they have enough people, every year when being asked for next year's resource needs they claim and use the max because having not used everything might make departments subjects to cuts... An example: a family member worked in a company acquired by our town, so she became a public service worker. Some normal office stuff. She has a great working attitude...basically her shit got done in half a workday and then she asked for more tasks. Instead of doing that she was told to not break the team spirit and atmosphere there...shed put everyone else in a bad light.

Also, political culture needs to change. If someone is bad...and obviously does a bad job...fire them, don't give them a promotion. This is more to appease people.

Also, media culture needs to change. Media seem to fight a fight "us against the Nazis" and therefore end up supporting current politics too much. Recently read an article that said "more than half of the 2015 surge immigrants are working! Yay!". Turns out, it was SLIGHLTY more than 50%. After 8! years. Most women didn't work...because of culture. And out of those 50% a large part got state money to make a living. This is not a success. At first it was sold as refugees, then as workers we desperately need.

But to be honest, I don't think anything will be done and nothing of significance will change. I try to work on my skill portfolio and think about jumping ship to some other European nation.

It's not just migration. Many Germans I know are just not happy with the government. And have not been for a while. People feel like their lives are worse, they can't afford apartments or houses and feel like their wealth is slowly melting away. They pay more and more taxes but feel the service they get in return is worse and worse. Cities are not kept clean, infrastructure from small too large is breaking apart. On the other hand an expensive cluster fuck of a public broadcasting system is kept alive where recent scandals made it look like they are dishonest and try to teach moral lessons instead of neutrally informing the people. Health care got worse, many doctors just not taking new patients and people having to wait for specialist appointments for months.

People that earn more are also desperate, because they usually live in larger cities where they cannot afford apartments or houses anymore. Also retirement gets worse and worse every year. Why should someone work 45+ years in a low wage job only to then the same money as someone who always worked?

All this shines a particularly bad light on the fact that no politician takes the blame anymore. There are scandals, people do a bad job...and then they end up leading the commission in Europe or some other large state agency (looking at you vdL and Nahles). They do not face any consequences anymore.

The people have the subconscious feeling that many things go wrong in Germany and the country needs bigger and radical changes but that those changes will not spawn within the current players. Or shorter: whoever they vote for, it's always the same stupid faces and swamp.

And last but not least I'd say that for years and years voters for the right wing party have been called fascists and Nazis by the (mentioned above) public media , even if they were just conservatives. They were (maybe rightfully?) judged by who their peers are in those parties. But this made many people being afraid to vote for those parties. Now they "had enough" and don't care about public opinion.

In my family there are some examples of definitely not racist people that will vote far right... And I stopped judging them but started listening to them. And I think all of them are brought back by implementing the right policies.

That is completely up to your personal taste. I personally like both. Sometimes it's nice having an espresso in the sun. Other times I prefer taking fifteen minutes for a nice hot pourover

Thank you that seems interesting. Personally, I wonder what the long-term effects will be like. I think reduced cooperation and communication will have an effect on new products, coming up with ideas etc. which cannot be measured right away.

Also, I wonder how many of those studies took children into account. Now that COVID lockdowns are over people can work at home without the family present which definitely leads to fewer interruptions.

Me to...on on the one hand you could leverage the power of many individuals, unlike in earlier days. On the other hand, SEOs would just inflitrate that space and it would turn out just as shitty.

Have a look at Europe. Many many people there live in apartment buildings. Some not even a garage. Others can't install chargers because the owner and the local government all have to agree. It's just not that easy... I myself know people who would happily pay. But the town didn't allow them to have a charger cus then theyd have to allow it for everyone and then the grid around their apartment complex couldn't handle it.

This sounds so much like out of a Douglas Adams book that it hurts.
