An excellent piece. I’m especially interested to hear stories from the fellow HNers about the last point Jocelyn mentions: how to build 2 shipping cultures inside one company, when your business requires it (for example: two-sided marketplaces with different apps for consumer and businesses).

In our case, we have this situation with SW vs HW shipping culture. On the SW side, we focus on continuously developing features and have deliberately emphasized productivity over schedule-predictability, while on the HW side they naturally are focused more on schedule-predictability due to complex dependencies.

Now, this dichotomy has created an interesting discussions inside the company on the right way to ship products and projects, and to me, arguments mainly come from the fact that people come from the different shipping culture and have hard time to see the benefits and requirements of the other culture.

There are several countries that have reaped benefits of nuclear power for decades. In Nordics, both Sweden and Finland has over 30% of electricity generated by nuclear. If a personal productivity tool provides real value and costs $60 dollars per year, it is a no-brainer buy even from personal budget. Most higher income information workers earn that in an hour or two.

Why wouldn’t ”note taking on steroids” be worth $1B? It is useful for any information work, and most of the higher income jobs are essentially or at least partly information work.

And if they are currently making close to $100M in annual revenues, then $1B valuation doesn’t seem far off.

Lock-in effect is quite substantial after you have a couple of years of tagged information.

As a user, I just wish they would have a smoother implementation of their current product-offering.

I have always loved Bolero for its hypnotic transcendental feeling, that can be found in music of Terry Riley, Arvo Pärt and electronic music. I started to reading about Sergiu Celibidache and he seems a very interesting composer. A teaser from Wikipedia:
