… but he won’t get young men to sleep in at 8pm

i've never had a problem with staying or even falling asleep, instead my issue is *wanting* to go to bed and getting myself there. adhd, executive dysfunctoning/akrasia, screens, chores i procrastinated all evening, etc, all give me too many things to do at night instead of tucking myself into bed. i basically don't feel tired at all until i lay down. i don't notice i'm mentally wiped until i start bottomfragging in a video game at 2 am.

i've taken melatonin (and magnesium) for a long time, but only in the past few months i started taking it like 3 hours before bed, after reading scott alexander's psychiatry website, instead of right beforehand.

i also happen to have been recently RXd a drug called guanfacine which dampens sympathetic activity (think fight-or-flight) and when i take it with the above pills, i finally *feel* tired at 10 pm. my body is heavy and slow and my brain starts craving being turned off. it's remarkable. there's something about *feeling* tired that is humbling and makes me feel human. weird!

BJ et all aren't joking when they say the biggest performance enhancer is sleep and especially regularity. i would rather sleep 6 hours and wake up at my normal time, than slide my schedule around and hit 8 and sleep in. but when i hit 8 on my usual schedule it's like i have superpowers. i don't make gains at the gym unless i sleep well. and it's such a funny thing to say out loud, but i don't need coffee when i'm rested. when i'm rested and take a coffee, it feels like i just drank 3 coffees and i'm ODing on top of my natural alertness.

and the product browsing page crashes when i apply more than 2 filters or attempt to sort by price. half of the visible products are out of stock or no longer manufactured. really enjoyable experience.

So should we wait for it? Is avoiding the embarrassment of calling a Fake Fascist a fascist worth it? Whats the EV on that decision? What’s the body count going to need to be before it’s Real Fascism?

you can just french toast anything you have laying around in your fridge or kitchen. they can't stop you.

i've done the french toast pizza and it wasn't bad. not sure if it was worth the effort. maybe there's an ideal type of pizza or combo of toppings that makes this spectacular. either way it's worth trying once just to say you did.

That’s really neat.

I’m ashamed that I have this wish that I were overweight and had an excuse to try a GLP1 just to see how it would affect my impulse control with non-food habits.

I guess there’s not much stopping me from buying some unregulated drugs from the internet and self-experimenting, but I haven’t heard experiences from people deliberately using them for anything but weight.

Do we know that’s an accurate image? The site says it’s an illustration and admits the exterior reveal comes later

I hope it’s not accurate. If so, interior looks more interesting than the exterior

Maybe the age of new and interesting apps is over?

it's a shame it really feels this way! i discovered some fun social apps recently like Bump and Retro that are a refreshing break from the big algoscrollers, but all my friends are either too locked into the existing big social apps or are determined to not mess with any social apps at all.

i think about this a lot and i genuinely believe that for every fringe diet or supplementation regimen, there exists a population it would genuinely benefit, for at least some point in their lives

but it's tricky to figure out and i assume the consensus rules are good enough for most people

Doesn't make sense to me that a 400lb obese person would need to consume the same amount of protein as a 400lb lean muscle bodybuilder.

yeah both of those people are extreme cases that would break this very crude formula

do you think that's a lot or a little? does that sound realistic or unrealistic?

anyway, i don't find anything here that stands out or is obviously against the consensus, other than recommending tallow as a cooking fat. i don't see any signs of seed oil extremism or sat fat trutherism otherwise. there's even this line about limiting sat fat:

In general, saturated fat consumption should not exceed 10% of total daily calories. Significantly limiting highly processed foods will help meet this goal. More high-quality research is needed to determine which types of dietary fats best support long-term health.

I'm not sure if I entirely understand your hypothesis, but I don't think it's 100% on the hardware - I don't think it's due to the hardware of the hardware.

I also have an M2 Air and a few things seem to consistently make my machine get hot and chug and dump the battery. Idling with my machine plugged into my 4k 144hz monitor isn't an issue, but going on a Zoom call or having one too many video streams open while docked to the monitor will do it.

Is my USB controller doing more "work" when I have a video stream open? I don't think so.

I agree that they probably don't serve most people well.

But I know someone that has a huge truck with a cap on his bed (google "pickup truck bed cap" or "topper"). That solves the weather problem and makes you wonder why you don't see more trucks covered up. The answer is obviously it looks less cool and doesn't fit the image. But it serves him well because he works in construction and frequently has the bed full of materials, sometimes which are longer than the bed. And he uses the truck occasionally to tow trailers.

But he's not most people. And he has another car for getting around town when he's not working.

i'm currently disputing a bill with a parking company. there's a kiosk at the movie theater served by the parking lot, so that you can get free parking if you see a movie. the kiosk has an option for you to describe your car if you forgot your license plate number. i did that and they sent me a bill for unpaid parking.

customer service is unable to acknowledge why that feature is offered and can only assert that if you park you gotta pay. after threatening to complain to the BBB and my state AG they have graciously offered to drop the ticket to $25.

thank you for listening to me vent :)

The withdrawal symptoms are actually strangely pleasant to me as long as I'm in the right mood and have something interesting to focus on.

i actually find this true, too. i’m dependent on nicotine lozenges and if i’m out and about and for some reason i don’t have my nicotine, i feel pretty locked in and focused on the task at hand (probably so i can hurry up and finish and access some nicotine). i often feel a bit chatty, too. maybe i haven’t tried being off it long enough to feel irritable. but this interesting headspace makes me optimistic that maybe quitting won’t be so bad, and that maybe the nicotine is somehow depressing my arousal and i’d be better without it (all the time).
