Is the streaming you talk about here and in the RFC over websockets, or the event-stream HTTP content type, or something more custom? Will the architecture have the potential to support realtime applications where the server will push updates to the client without the need to poll on an interval?

The article mentioned that after 5 yes-or-no questions in 60 minutes, the patients became exhausted. I'm guessing that activating certain parts of the brain requires considerably more effort for them than for a healthy person based on that.

"New-space" aerospace companies are operating on a different funding framework from the old aerospace juggernauts. Instead of cost-plus funding that came almost solely from the government and which allowed rockets like ULA's Delta IV and Atlas V to stay competitive in the $300-400 million range without having to find ways to cut costs. SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Orbital Sciences, as well as other new companies, have to innovate in order to make their businesses feasible.
Additionally, Blue Origin and SpaceX have different goals from traditional aerospace firms that requires them to drive costs down below what a government would require. Blue Origin want to offer rides to space to tourists; for that, their costs need to be low enough for a person to buy a ticket. SpaceX wants to land their rockets on Mars, and then take off again. Being able to land the first stage of the Falcon 9 allows them to perfect the landing and reuse of rockets on Earth, before taking that knowledge to Mars.
One way you can think about it is that humanity's finally hit the "elbow" in the exponential curve of technological advancement.
What's the difference between that and any other type of media on the internet? Take YouTube videos for example. An MP4 video file is also "nothing but a regular file served from a web page," yet YouTube doesn't include a "download" link for any videos on their site.

I completely agree with this. I've downloaded some apps for blogs on my phone, but I realized that they just sit there in a folder, on a home page a rarely visit, while my RSS app is front and center in my dock.

Going through the front page of HN today, it became clear to me how amazing Aaron Swartz was. Co-authoring RSS at age fourteen and then going on to help with the creation Markdown, even without mentioning his contributions to reddit it seems as though Aaron's influence on the web and how we use it will be profound for a long time to come.

Well, if using the definition of pop culture described in this article, pop culture evolves. Where countries drive on the road can be related more to how programming languages define blocks of code. C-like languages use curly braces to define blocks. This can be related to how since medieval times, horses rode on the left side of the road. More modern languages use different ways to define blocks of code. For example, Python uses tabbing and whitespace, Ruby uses the `end` keyword.
Continuing to use the traffic analogy, you don't have to use cruise control while driving on a long stretch of highway, but it's a lot easier to, and everyone else does. In the article, raganwald is talking about how coding conventions and techniques evolve over time. The analogy about driving in the UK vs the US is more equivalent to the syntactic rules of the specific language you are working with; it's the law which side of the road to drive on. You'll get penalized if you do otherwise. Using or not using cruise control is your choice, and so are naming conventions in different languages. Conventions evolve, even when the specific "laws" of the languages don't change as quickly, or at all.
Like you said, they are a decoration. When handwriting something, some people use underlines for different kinds of emphasis. Those people want to make text look a certain way. It's good that HTML5 brought back underlines, just in case someone wants to use them, they at least have the option.
One thing I'm worried about is Linux. The article says you can add only one partition. If you want to install more than one OS, or have separate root, home and boot partitions, what would you do?

Coming from Java, I didn't understand the point of pointers (no pun intended) until I was re-reading through chapter 1 of K&R C.
At one point, they mention how when you pass a variable into a function, it only passes the value really, "copying" the variable, in a way. Then they go on to say that changing the original variable is talked about in chapter 5, which covers pointers. Then it just clicked. If you want to change the original value, pass a pointer to said variable. If you want to just use the value of a variable, pass the variable through the function.
It's so much easier than what I was doing before, assigning the variable to the return value of a function.
I noticed that in the url when searching there is a parameter "?utf8=✓". I just thought the use of ✓ was a little odd, and was wondering why this choice was made.
