The bottom line:

if a website cannot reliably detect a VPN user's true location and the law requires it to do so for all users in a particular state, then the legal risk could push the site to either ban all known VPN IPs, or to mandate age verification for every visitor globally.

Clearly anyone slightly sophisticated can bypass restrictions like this. A quick search reveals https://github.com/shadowsocks. This only harms regular users who might benefit from privacy. The dystopia levels continue to rise...

Taxes, if not quite the price of civilisation, do give citizens a reason to care about efficient and effective government. Severing that connection, and leaving large chunks of the electorate as mere recipients of state largesse, risks deepening America’s political dysfunction.

We can't have nice things without paying for them. People who believe they are self-sufficient seem to ignore all the public infrastructure that keeps society and the economy moving (e.g. roads, emergency response/firefighters, schools, parks, libraries, etc).

Imagine how much more entrepreneurial people could be if taking big big financial risks didn't have dire consequences like not having access to health care.

No one loves paying taxes, especially when you don't agree with ways it's spent, but that means we need to fix politics and spend money better rather than denying that society needs financial contributions from almost everybody to function.

The numbers here are staggering:

Basically it boils down to the US meeting this electricity need using natural gas and fossil fuels (with nuclear as an eventual goal) and China moving at a similar pace using renewables. Of course the AI companies on the west coast don't have to experience the pollution such energy demand brings to the communities nearby the power and data center facilities.

Brown CS (back in 2004) gave you a choice: you could either take a 2-class intro sequence that started with Scheme and eventually OCaml before moving into OOP with Java, or you could start with Java from the get-go and make cool/flashy projects like Tetris by the end. Both course sequences were supposed to bring you to roughly the same place by the end.

I took the Scheme path and feel great about having a deep theoretical foundation in CS, but I know plenty of folks who started with the fun/shiny stuff and became amazing software engineers. So all in all I'm really glad they gave us a choice.

I will admit that there were people in my classes who didn't really understand what they were getting themselves into and possibly would have benefited from starting with Python or Java and getting more inspired about building cool projects. It really was a YMMV ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Aidan Raney, founder of Farnsworth Intelligence, posed as an American willing to help North Koreans to investigate the issue for a client who almost hired a fake engineer. During the course of two video calls with three or four people who all said their names were “Ben,” Raney learned the details. “The Bens” would handle all the upfront work for him—creating a fake LinkedIn profile to verify his new identity for U.S. recruiters, formulating a bio, and sending it out to dozens of job postings with a new Gmail address they set up.

The Bens even modified Raney’s headshot to a black-and-white photo so it wouldn’t resemble his usual picture, Raney told Fortune. If Raney got a job, he would show up for meetings, like a morning stand-up or scrum, and go about his day while a North Korean engineer handled the workload. Raney would be allowed to keep 30% of the salary but had to transfer 70% to the Bens using crypto, Paypal, or Payoneer.

“What they were trying to do was use my identity to bypass background checks, and so they wanted this fake persona they created to be extremely close to the real-life version,” said Raney.

The Bens got Raney an interview, and while it was ongoing, they used a remote-desktop application to set up a notepad on Raney’s screen so they could write out responses to the questions from the interviewer, Raney explained. And it worked: Raney got a verbal offer for a job with a private government contractor that paid $80,000 a year.

He then had to immediately turn around and tell the company he couldn’t accept the offer and apologize for claiming their time.

I don't believe it's an actual counterpoint to legalization, since it seems solvable with better regulation. I suppose it could be solved with private labs and a more demanding public, however outright lying by private labs muddies the water -- who do you believe?

Cannabis is also in a unique situation given that is in legal gray area due to federal prohibition in the US (and many other countries).

I'm curious if pesticide contamination is as prevalent in markets where cannabis is decriminalized or legalized at the country level.

This is really cool! Well done. Like others, I'd love to specify generic things like distance to a "grocery store" or "gym" as part of my initial criteria. I see that I can add a long list of possible places that meet a search, so maybe I just want the UI to hide the details from me and add all those possible places for me.

I personally found the additional criteria being added to the top to be counter intuitive and I inadvertently deleted locations thinking it was the newest criterion, but it was actually my earlier ones. I think I've been trained to look/scroll to the bottom for the added element (e.g. like when adding additional Google Maps locations)

I would also love an option to mix transportation modes. For example, public transportation and biking.

Yes and having direct links to sources to validate its answers is a huge benefit given the fundamental limitations of LLMs. Now you can decide if you trust the source material directly.

This is a fair point. I can see the excitement around recognizing that mitochondria is alive to motivate exploring its other functions. But I think you're right someone might be interested in that exploration regardless of whether it's considered alive.

Edit: to your point, there are plenty of scientists interested in studying viruses and much debate about whether or not they are alive. Ultimately it probably doesn't matter.

I do think when you consider mitochondria to be alive, it broadens the scope of your thinking because you start considering each characteristic of life in relation to mitochondria. You might not be motivated to do that without thinking in those terms.

I recognize that you might be motivated to explore removing and implanting mitochondria regardless of whether you consider it to be alive (as you might think about implanting an organ from another source).

I think the main point the author is making is to not fall prey to reductive thinking about mitochondria's potential and less about the question of "aliveness". We were all taught about mitochondria producing ATP, but it sounds like it serves many other functions and there's a lot more to explore about its potential in synthetic biology and therapeutics.

Defining mitochondria as “nonliving” isn’t just a classification mistake, nor a question of word choice. Rather, it is a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature and role of mitochondria. It inherently undermines our understanding of biological systems and deeply influences the tools we build to study them.

Once you accept mitochondria as alive, you might be motivated to explore its "potential" niche, as described by the author. The example of implanting cross-species mitochondria in human cells (e.g. from a gorilla) might lead to novel therapies.

It's about breaking outside the box of mitochondria having to live inside specific environments.

Several folks have already mentioned that ChatGPT with search returns the correct answer to your question (with a source to explore directly).

I really think this latest release is a game changer for ChatGPT since it seems much more likely to return genuine information than ChatGPT answering using its model alone. Of course it still hallucinates sometimes (I asked about searching tabs in Firefox Mobile and it told him the wrong place to find that ability while citing a bunch of Mozilla help docs), but it's much easier to verify that by clicking through to sources directly.

It feels like a very different experience using ChatGPT with search turned on and the "Citations" right side bar left open. I get answers from ChatGPT while also seeing a bunch of possibly relevant links populate. If I detect something's off I can click on a source and read the details directly. It's a huge improvement on relying on the model alone.

I'm guessing that if most meteorite samples are collected after impact on earth such a brittle crust would be destroyed before observation.

I'm curious how much range it gets before needing a charge, and how long it takes to charge during that break. Running 12 hours a day doesn't tell us anything about distance covered.
