Ive seen it in action. When you get lazy, you start to notice that the single most important aspect is posturing.

So to be lazy you start posturing, selling people how great you and your project is. The more projects you have under you, the higher the chance of something very successful too.

It works, suddenly they can work even less and get promoted.

Ofc this is horrible for the company, having the worst people doing the most “internal sales for positioning”. This also creates a giant middle management layer.

I wouldn’t say they are dumb, they just noticed that great work has no correlation with performance. What does have a correlation is how you act and speak. The All-In Chamaths of the world (not saying he is dumb, he isnt, but damn if boosting isn’t everything for him).

Kind of tired of people taking anabolic steroids and then claiming it's a smaller part of their success or people being born rich talking about hard work whilst being on the golf course.

Just be happy that we live in a time where drugs have been painstakingly researched and move on without the ego boost. Be humble.

Found it interesting and engaging, but having a CS professor at Colombia putting their name to AI “slop” is a bit unnerving. If they are writing papers for work you would hope they would enjoy the process of thinking and writing (journaling) instead of using ChatGPT.

It’s because maths are the ultimate abstraction. It’s timeless and corner cases (almost) fully understood. Ok maybe not, but at least relative to whatever JavaScript developers are reinventing for the thousand time.

Can you explain it in another way? What you are saying is that instead of loosing 100% they loose 70% and loosing 70% is somehow good? Or are you saying the risk adjusted returns are then 30% better on the downside than previously thought? Because if you are, I think people here are saying the risk is so high that it is a given they will fail.

For my part it is the uneasy feeling of maybe being tracked and “sharing” private text/media either by accident or by the software’s malice.

Most devs want to put AI on their CV so they have strong personal incentives to circumvent what is best for their users.

Kind of resonate with my experience, I built an app that only seemed to sell in San Francisco and some European capitals.

Before release, I thought it would simply be correlated with population density, but I was very very wrong.

It was an educational app, not related to IT…

You could try getting an European TV, at least then it will ask and you can say no.

This burden is on politicians. If you can extract enough value from tourism you both lessen the tourism and get people more happy about tourists.

The monetary value has to match the damage it does to have people caring less about the “environment” they are in (gossip puts pressure on people to behave, just like renting puts less pressure on people to take care of their apartment).

You could argue that the point of creating an oligopoly and then squeezing customers after the fact also is adding friction. All value creation is not great for the people. But it is hidden under the name. Financial engineering and rent-seeking are getting quite advanced nowadays, because of the political class.

I like the idea of classifying it into four buckets: those that are below tax net gains for a country, those who are above and those that are above the tax net gains using just their wealth, and then the government.

I do not agree with the articles framing but TV, books and friends can be shared, a social media feed isn’t.

In fact, I would guess the strongest relationships are those where those are shared.

Then no lobbying against the politicians would be needed to be done.

It’s easy to reduce it to party lines, but that kind of thinking is just wrong. Details matters.
