Sure, I get that, but are these cameras being sold as "secure from anyone that isn't you", or as "keep an eye on things easily, from anywhere in the world!"

The distinction is important, because an implication of secure-by-default means that the manufacturer has dropped the ball. If there's nothing to imply that the device is secure (as opposed to just providing 'security' via CCTV), then this is more a case of the installer of the device willingly, and knowingly, providing a live-stream of their property to the world.

It genuinely feels like these devices are unintentionally intentionally left open.

That doesn't apply here though. Instances that are already up are experiencing DNS resolution issues because the Amazon-provided DNS service (which is distinct from Route53) is failing

I'm not English, I don't live in the UK, but the approach and wording in this article bothers me.

Are these companies "sell outs" because they sold, or because they sold to foreign companies?

Shouldn't they be lauded as successes for having been sold in the first place? Is this part of the problem that the root of the article (as I see it) is actually talking about?

I quite like how this approach to storytelling/demonstration has been put together.

I don't want to get drawn into this type of argument - suffice to say that hand-waving me (or anyone) away with a "well why don't you commit code to fix it|make it better?" doesn't make what I'm saying any less valid.

I have great respect for the creators and contributors to LibreOffice, but in my opinion, the UI is outdated. I even said at the very start of my comment, that this was an opinion. My opinion. One man's opinion.

Maybe I wasn't clear - having TOTP integration is a (genuinely) great thing.

Look at the embedded video that's linked on the article - see the integrated totp interface for Google auth? An interface that ships that kind of 'it works, it'll do* UI comes across as half-baked to me.

I've often been drawn to testing out LibreOffice (and OpenOffice), but every single time I open the apps, they always look terrible.

This isn't 1990 anymore - if the kind of UI design that the devs have gone for (have settled on?) alienates a tech-friendly user such as myself, there isn't a hope in hell of people like my parents using it regularly.

Does anyone know why the style they use has persisted for so long? Is it just a case that no one cares about this sort of thing on that project?

A number of high-profile, consumer-centric sites/services were completely offline for around an hour throughout what appears to be a large portion of Europe.

I tend to read comments, and not articles - as a result, sometimes I wish that HN had a special `TLDR` subsection, directly below a posting, that used vote-based mechanics for the selection of a post like this.

Hey - figured I'd put this up here in case people found it interesting.

The app is quite simple, and took me a total of 3 months to build, from conception to release (mainly grabbing an hour here and there when possible), with a real-dev-time of probably a week or so

edit I've been told that the instructions are .. lacking .. so incase anyone is tempted to try it out:

- touch the shape to fill it

- hold until the shape is filled

- rinse/repeat

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of it, regardless of the language or inevitable vulnerabilities that come from being inexperienced with web development.

It's a very small leap to go from this, to understanding separation of concerns.

I can understand why this perception could be read into his post, but I think the much stronger argument here is that the web he sees now, after his release, is not a web at all - it's 3-4 massive nodes that are connected only because they use the same pipes
