For me it just sounds like a consumer generation smartening up - no napkin, hooters, beer and softeners... This is mostly waste anyway, our needs and consumption will change and the industry has to change with it.

As far as I've experienced working only with floss, none of my clients ever cared about what tools I was using. Not only that but I haven't found much community that share/support/talk about running a creative business on floss only. But now I have hone my skills and I can produce the same results for the market/product I am working with, and enjoy the stability and flexibility of linux.

Why are VR posts devoided of any talk about porn technology development. I think a huge market for VR will be the porn industry, and it seems quite untapped at this point.

I'm not clear about China/Japanese investment in the USA but doesn't that feel like the US is loosing it's edge and competitiveness. From an uninformed point of view it surely feels like China and Japan are actually in a position of control here more than ever?

That is for sure a needed design, and we've seen it in few sci fi. We are used to hear car and it's part of our safety system, EV vehicle will make a lot less noise and should definitly have recognizable sound.

That is what I am doing now, but I was wondering about boiler plate code, most site have menu, pages, contact form and some of these basic elements, at which point it feel redundant to re-create each time.

But don't ageism always happened to be reverse? I still roll my eyes when a early 20's try to sells me idea of marketing - and although you can have a lot of good ideas at that age, you still don't have life and work experience that is needed to go trough massive amount of stress or unknown situations. I think it's fine that kids who run new business don't want old folks in there. It's a bit of a return of the balance. If you're too old to get hired, how about starting a new business with other oldies?

The whole car pride is a thing of the past. It used to define who you were and prove your success. People are simply evolving and take the car for what it is, it's simply transportation and you shouldn't make a big deal out of it, nor you should go in massive debt for it. If the car industry wants to change, making better quality, cheaper car, less polluting and smaller or more intelligent, it might benefit them a lot.

But on the other side of the medal, there are a lot of people who gets paid to study no? If I was a poor student I'd try to get hired in one of these business and start going to school while being paid.

That's one side of the story - I think there is also an imbalance of old folks in higer ranking job, from politics to multinationals, no?

Yes I'll definitely expand my cloudfront + s3 for my next projects - to see how that could help. The only + for shared hosting is that I offer free shared hosting email with any hosting for my clients. Email are getting to be an expensive commodities.

for static site, can't you use any shared hosting and have 1000sites for 3$/month? Not sure I follow the logic behind the article.

As a web developer I feel sometime solution like that remove the understanding of how the internet works. This script can be replaced by a tiny shell script, that runs a rsync of the dev folder to your server, and I think it is important to know basic scripting like that even for a front end dev. I have to say that I haven't tried the script but I haven't seen anything impressive from the presentation video.

Well that's definitly an oxymoron, use your own mail server, or paid mail server, use imap for google, ose AdBlock, or just don't use free service if you don't want ads...

There is really a need for a simple cms out there. I really prefer the selft hosted open source solution. There is quite a market of client that need only minimal manageability, where wordpress/joomla/typo3 is way too much for what they need. I was reading about Cloud Cannon service too that offer something similar, but again the paid service, we own your data, is somewhat less interesting. Looking forward for a minimal self hosted open source node.js/json cms in the near future ;)

I hear you with that. It's hard to let go of something you sunk hundreds of hours. It would be quite healtier to just fire them and move on. It would have a tremendous positive effect on my days on my business.

I am thinking to do it in 2 phases. I am finishing the last wave of update to the site today or tomorrow. From then on I'll let them know as I said to them previously if the want any other update/changes, they have to pay if not the contract is done. At least I give them a bone, and if they pay I am willing to continue the relation.

Yes indeed, it was the hard way to learn to manage client. Although I read about it so many time, I just jumped in hoping it wouldn't be one of those...

My plan is to finish the contract - but not held hostage by it. Trying to find the best solution for everyone.

I can't afford to walk away and give back the deposit at this point. The client seems serious enough to end up paying. I might have high hope as well since they're German (why do I trust them more is probably just a preconceived idea).

The site itself is live and 95% working for the user. There will still be a big part of administration and management that I see coming shortly - which is working as far as I can tell but will be another story when they start managing their site.

I have talked to a lawyer, but at this point I got told, since it was international online business stuff I needed to get a specialize lawyer and would need to put the money down first. We aren't incorporated yet, just moved from freelancer to owning my own business. I am not too worried legally at this point, I am more worried about tears and sweat - and the negeative impact it has on the other part of my business.

That's what I was wondering about. Seems like there is a lot of dirty clothes to clean at this point. I sent an email to the client yesterday to sit down and talk, instead of them sending angry email of 'Why isn't this ready- and how about that part - and this part which we never talked about'. Not only that, but there is an intermediary person between me and the company. And there seems to be another intemediary person between her and the 'bosses'.

If I take one thing from that is learning to work 16 hours a day for many days in a row. I am getting tired but at least I know I can put the extra effort when needed, as long as it doesn't stay like that for too long.

Whatever nice algorithm or perfect code facebook could uses for the advertising the problem will always remain, people go on facebook to connect with other people, or to peep on people they don't know - that's its market share, nothing more and I don't think they can change that. It's a flawed model and I don't think it'll survive for long. It could have become a great protocole if it had been open since the start, but it'll probably have the same ending as... what was it, myPlace?

Well in the case of shared hosting, if any user of that shared hosting spams, it will block the whole server. So the idea of using a vps is more and more interesting - now just have to find a way to market that to my users :D
