At my university we use Moodle and that lets me setup a page where students can schedule one-on-one appointments with me (during office hours). When a student books a time, Moodle sends me an email with the details.
I use a rule and an Applescript to scrape the details from the email and put the booking into my calendar.
Here is my implementation in python of the Poisson equation on an arbitrary 2D domain using the finite element method. I used this for teaching a course in partial differential equations:

What I've heard from people installing solar at home is that even though you install solar and a battery, you are not allowed to disconnect from the network unless you are a rural property.

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day-Night Band (VIIRS DNB) images the entire Earth nightly at a resolution of about 750 meters. Suomi NPP orbits the Earth 14 times per day on a 16-day repeat cycle. The average time at which images are taken is near 01:30 in local solar time, but can vary by over an hour depending on latitude and the particular cycle.
This is exactly what I was hinting at: IEEE journals (TGRS, etc.) are filled with deep learning and machine learning on satellite imagery papers.
They are more tech focused journals and have less impact.
If we used deep learning then we probably wouldn't have got into the journal 'Remote Sensing of Environment'
To get into top journals it is really about simple method + novel idea + good story.
The same holds for top Finance journals like 'Journal of Finance', etc.
Only a cheap trick, but a useful one :-)

Really nice article, my mind is always blown by all the cool shit we keep on learning about our Earth.
And then the article became all the more sweeter when I realised that it all this work was done by people I know at Geoscience Australia. Very cool.
In regards to the DFG funding it says that foreigners are allowed "provided they have been resident in Germany for several years and have completed at least three years of scientific work as a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher in the German research system".
And from my understanding that is what replacement 457 will ensure.
"A DECRA Recipient may be awarded ARC funding of up to $139,369 per year of funding. The per annum salary contribution from the ARC is fixed at $99,369 (2016$), including 30 per cent on-costs, and up to a maximum of $40,000 project costs." - From ARC funding rules for DECRA.
So basically, close to $100K per annum goes to you (pre-tax) for 3 years and $30K to the university per annum. For project costs it depends on how you spend them.
I agree that having foreigners come is great for science in Australia but it's a bit dramatic to say "you might as well close down science in Australia".
An ARC DECRA does go to your own bank account as it pays your salary.
Btw, as an Australian you can't apply for a NSF fellowship nor a European fellowship.
