Is this what Hacker News has become? A place to whore yourself and your business? Please don't encourage these kinds of posts.

He wasn't just abrasive, he was incompetent.

This might be one of the worst articles I've ever read.

""I advocate never lying in personal relationships. But if you have Anne Frank in your attic and a Nazi knocks on the door, lie....I lie to any government official." (Blanton's politics are just this side of Noam Chomsky's.)"

I don't see how the quote is even remotely related to Chomsky's politics.

That is one side of it, yes. Congress takes your money to do a lot of horrible things, like the hundreds of thousands of documented civilians that were killed as a direct result of the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

But Congress takes your money to do a lot of things, and some of them are absolutely important, like taking care of the medical problems that older people have.

Trolls (2008) 15 years ago

Trolls are an important part of anonymous communities. They prevent people from having their heads so far up their asses that the community becomes an echo chamber. Too much moderation will contribute to echo chambers, as well.

Freedom Of Speech 15 years ago

This is exactly right. Court protection of free speech will do nothing when your government can imprison you indefinitely without proof of any crime committed.

If you considered him a nutcase, you might want to reassess the methods which you use to determine if someone is a nutcase.

I'm not really surprised by this. The FBI is a horrible organization, just like most wings of the US government.

Note that the first graph is "Six Years After College Entry". So that's 1-2 years after graduation. BARELY any time (if any) for interest to accumulate (as it doesn't while you're still a student).

I'd like to see a graph of 5 or 10 years after college graduation.

Edit: I was misinformed about college loans, please read the comments below this post. It is worse than I thought.

Why not make every employee a board member, with one vote each, and equal ownership of the company?

Decisions would be made based on what is in the best interest of the employees of that company. A real democratic way to run a business.

Israel has extreme human rights issues they need to deal with before I'll consider doing business with them. The Israeli government insists on continuing to settle its citizens onto Palestinian territory, driving local Palestinians off their land. As long as settlements continue, businesses should not look to Israel as a country to work with.

Sad how there's no discussion of the economy that enables stuff like this to happen. "Why were people so cruel and evil?" is a stupid question; it's not about cruelty or being "evil". It's about money. Don't expect people to be moral in this economic system. Morality is a weakness in a capitalist society, and you'll go out of business if you bring morality into a competitive business ecosystem. This is why we need to change the rules of our economic system, if you care about morality.

Moreover, sure P. S. Landis "saved the whales", but he didn't do it to save the whales, he did it to generate an enormous amount of profit for Mobile Oil, and was paid for it handsomely.

The title of this article as posted on hacker news is "A shuffled deck of cards is unique in all human history".

Note that it does not say "If you shuffle a deck of cards, it will be unique in all of human history," which is the argument that the actual article is making.

The article title here is logically equivalent to "Any shuffled deck of cards is unique in all of human history" which is logically equivalent to "No two shuffled decks of cards in human history are equivalent". Therefore, the title of the article as it appears on hacker news needs to be changed

I don't particularly care for either argument, it just seems like pointless pandering to different fan bases. Applications will evolve towards any platform as necessary
