It still is early days, and it needs some more helper functions but it's really nice having two-way capabilities (not just code -> model, but also the reverse).

Of course having Text-to-model as a first class citizen is also nice.

Zed looks really cool and I would love to give it a try, but I am just too beholden to devcontainers. I know there are workarounds to use them with Zed but with many extra steps compared to VS Code and it's forks. I can't go back to not having a totally integrated container per repo.

Exactly what I was thinking. Wish I had the time and expertise to give adding support for this codec myself a go. Streaming Clair Obscure over my LAN via Sunshine / Moonlight is exactly my use-case and the latency could definitely be better.

This sounds perfect for my use case. I'm a mountain biker who doesn't mind setting up hosting infra. It's fairly common when mountain biking to unintentionally get separated by line-of-sight or more than 75M even among very similarly skilled riders. Even on straight easy trails, just the dust cloud generated by the rider ahead can cause you to back off significant distance if it's dusty.

I've used these[0] in the past and they worked ok. I lost the pair I bought when traveling and thought using the plethora of radios I have with me anyway on my phone with an earbud headphone would be much better replacement. Would be great for group rides to just send an app link instead of suggesting they all buy $100 hardware.

Honestly I think a well marketed and polished commercial app would have both Sena and Cardo[1] both quite existentially scared.

Any chance it could use seamless transport switching? It would be so awesome if it could switch to cellular(if available) or wifi-direct as needed on the fly. I have been thinking about creating such an app but lacked the time.

I think it might be brutal for more than junior people now. I thought I would be fine when my previous employer decided to offshore all of engineering and I was laid off as a result. I have been at an architect/lead/principal level for the last 7 years doing backend work with mostly state-of-the-art tech on AWS. 15 years experience total, and just getting no traction despite referrals. None of my jobs were at hyperscale FAANG types, or super sexy stuff. I'm not a thought leader with an influential blog nor have I built an open source library with 5k stars. Maybe that is what it takes to get a call back now? I'm a regular hacker who loves technology and never dreamed I would be struggling this badly.

In terms of impact, LLMs might be the biggest leap forward in computing history, surpassing the internet and mobile computing. And we are just at the dawn of it. Even if not full AGI, computers can now understand humans and reason. The excitement is justified.

Hmm I assumed the opposite. The mass exodus of long time users who are pissed about the API changes won't happen until there is a destination that can handle the migration without servers going down. It will be interesting to see what happens.

It's very fast for a low power, laptop-focused processor and even then only truly excels at single-threaded workloads. It's out classed by AMD mobile offerings (4900HS and 4800U) in multi-threaded workloads on most tests[0]. If you step up to desktop processors, the top end processors like the AMD 5950X are in a different class of multi-threaded performance.

Don't get me wrong, it's an exceptional processor and incredibly fast for its sub-25W TDP.

If you are open to Windows at all, Windows Subsystem 2 handles scenarios like this well for me. The VMs are extremely fast, light-weight and integrated well. The VMs start in under 2 seconds and compile times are virtually identical to running on the host. I use the host Windows system as my "personal" computing space and all work is isolated on the WSL2 VM. I simply run a windows X server for GUI apps (X410 is my goto) and it works flawlessly. Multiple WSL2 instances can be run with different flavors of Linux in each including Arch and Kali as would be the case in your scenario.

I realize having a closed-source Windows host can be a complete non-starter for many.

I think we should still give them credit for being the most open among their peers. MacOS, iOS, Safari and Windows are not open source at all. Edge is of course just another Chromium based browser.

One Git UI that I absolutely love but I rarely see mentioned is GitKraken. It's so nice having a fully cross-platform Git GUI, that's attractive and intuitive.

Most posts here are going to mention MacOS as the key feature that will always keep them on Mac hardware. That is understandable, people are comfortable with it.

I currently use it for work and am not impressed(just as I was last time in 2014), having always used Linux and sometimes Windows. The only reason I haven't bootcamped Ubuntu is that all of our conference rooms are set up to display via AirPlay(proprietary). I don't want to be the one always hunting for the HDMI dongle (yes it's a mid-2015 MacBook Pro that still has that).

-Why is there a global menu bar? With multiple monitors we have 10+ application visible at one time. Why do I need to select one first to then use a menu action instead of just clicking on it like GNOME / Windows

-Why are there command/option keys instead of ctrl/alt? This seems like pointless we-are-different-and-special stuff

-Why does clicking X (close on an application) just minimize it instead of killing it? But yet minimizing it just puts it in a separate area of the dock?

-Why does trying to snap windows to the sides of the monitor throw it into full-screen mode and create a new workspace that then fucks with my ability to overlap windows or alt-tab?

-Why does spotlight (CMD + Space) only find one option? Why isn't it part of launchpad?

-brew sucks compared to apt and snap but it is better than choclatey

-you still need a VM to run docker

-you need non-apple hardware to have a back button on the mouse (I loathe the magic mouse 2)

For all the devotion it gets for being a modern *NIX development platform, it's solid but not overwhelmingly great.

Give Linux and Win10 a try, I am finding them equal these days.

Hardware wise, a laptop without a Thunderbolt port these days is just a deal-breaker. There is no excuse for Surface Book 2 to not have one. It's the reason I chose the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 over it (and saved $400 in doing so).

I was a fan of Surface Book 1 and bought one, it served me well. MS is doing good stuff.

At my shop we have been using ASP Core since RC1 and have been quite happy with it. The tooling feels a lot like Node.js in a way, much different from any previous .NET development. It's awesome to have C# be deployable as docker containers on Linux hosts.

My biggest gripe so far has been that Nuget doesn't have a way to search only for libraries that are Core compatible.
