I wonder what YC Part Time Partner Peter Thiel thinks of this...

I just did a search and nearly every piece, with even a minor tinge of support for Gawker's side, has been 'flagged'.

You say this doesn't go very deep but where has there been a good, substantive discussion on Hacker News about the implications of Thiel's lawsuit? the darker precedent it sets? This issue is important to the tech world, it cuts to the heart of many aspects of this industry and some of the most foundational aspects of our law.

You're right that other communities get value from discussing this argument. There are smart people here, and this piece has been submitted 9 times. It's a shame that a small group can shut down this discussion from happening. As much as I hoped it wouldn't, it makes the point of the piece.

did you read the piece? this is a specific implication that I haven't seen elsewhere (you have links?). it's a pretty standard prohibitionist argument and I feel like Hacker News could have a substantive discussion about it. I'm not a journalist, I care about this because I'm also in the tech industry.

this post is about what happens if Gawker is destroyed by thiel... if people really don't like gawker, then I really don't think they'll like what is likely to come next. this is a prohibitionist argument and it seems like a good thing for Hacker News to discuss instead of flagging.

what VR hardware have you tried?

There's a big difference between Apple making their own VR hardware and shipping a computer with a fast enough GPU to run other VR hardware (or ability to have a fast enough GPU via something like the Razer Core).

The latter would be necessary for Apple in the growing VR ecosystem but it could be great for many other areas that require an intensive GPU. And that's the argument of the piece.

Don't know if this comment will make a difference but its worth saying, before you make a comment here, to mention some context on what VR hardware you've tried.

I've tried the consumer Oculus, the HTC Vive, and the Hololens.

what VR dev kits have you tried?

There are plenty of institutions in the world (the US Congress, Hacker News) that are markets for social capital with a design that orients itself towards a particular contributor. Blaming them for the right things is how they become better intuitions.

What's wrong with having a sales pitch at the end?

hello hn, this is cody from scroll kit. I want to respond to a few things.

1.) I had no plans to write a post about nytimes legal after their initial email. I simply complied with their demand and wrote them that I had taken down the video. Their next email, where they told me to remove all references to the Times from our site was pretty absurd and thought they should be called out for it. If you’re willing to take the risk, it’s a good idea for everyone to call out a big company sending overreaching legal requests. I can only imagine how many other startups don’t challenge their demands and are bullied into complying.

2.) The biggest misunderstanding here seems to be that we're somehow undervaluing the creative struggle, and the reporting/creation of assets, it took to arrive at "Snow Fall." This doesn't make much sense to me, it's a replica which by definition means the pieces are already there, we're just coming to it with entirely different code.

A big point to make is that it didn't take the Times hundreds of hours to make "Snow Fall", it took them thousands of hours. It's safe to say they spent, at least, a hundred + hours on JUST the assemblage of their content onto the page. It's that process that we have dedicated ourselves to improving. Which, for a lot of news orgs who don't have the resources of the Times, makes it possible for them to be able to experiment with these kinds of stories.

Another way of phrasing our tagline could have been something like:

We spent thousands of hours hand-coding scroll kit so you can make a replica of “Snow Fall,” in one hour.

You misunderstand how much time the Times spent making "Snow Fall." They spent six months and of those tens of thousands of hours in those six months, hundreds of it was spent hand coding the layout.

The experience involved in hand-coding the layout is painful and awkward and can be improved dramatically. Getting those hundred hours down to an hour is something we think everyone can get behind.

I thought that this was going to be a link to buy physical HN magnets. This turned out to be much cooler but, if they were available, I would also buy this for my fridge.

This is one of the most nostalgic/introspective scrolls I've had infront of my computer in quite some time. thank you.
