It's £4.99 or £9.99 per month. Most people probably spend significantly more than this for their iPhone contract, data and so on. Unlimited music for this price is a steal. Pony up, or put up with the ads.

Starting to really dislike the text editor snobbery on HN.
At home I use TextMate for Python and Ruby, Eclipse for Java. At work, Eclipse for Java and Visual Studio for C#. I'm not 'serious' about my hobby and career because I like a different text editor to you?
Have you discovered the (relative) joys of Calibre?
It's not perfect, but it's very good and much nicer than doing it manually. Especially for managing collections. Regularly updated too.
I have very mixed feelings about CCTV, but generally I don't mind it (note that this is different to being 'for' it). I worked for a company writing software for CCTV operators, recording/playback etc and I heard of various crimes being solved and our images being used to convict a murderer, people who caused damage to property, thieves and so on. Very good feeling.
I don't mind the fact that I'm recorded when I walk down the street - not because of the flawed 'I have nothing to hide' argument, but simply because I can't think of a reason that I would mind. Most cameras aren't actively watched unless there is a specific reason to, and the recordings are deleted usually after 30 days. On the one hand you may dislike the camera watching you - but you'd be thrilled if it recorded the guy who mugs you on your way home and leads to his arrest and subsequent conviction. I do feel safer knowing this on the occasion that I'm on my own in an area that I don't feel safe. Maybe this is due to working with CCTV in the past, I'm more acutely aware of its presence then I might be otherwise.
London's CCTV will lead to literally hundreds of arrests of these scumbags (I live near an area that was involved, and have family even closer) that would otherwise have gone completely unpunished. Many more of the people involved in the riots are having a hard time sleeping tonight then if there were no CCTV.
@hcho - ig1 is correct. Most of the imagery you're seeing on TV is at the scene of the riot. Images of CCTV in the surrounding areas will be scoured over the coming weeks, many covered faces will have been uncovered a few streets away. Also watching where people came from can help to find associations - for example they arrest somebody who was seen on CCTV to have arrived with somebody who is not yet identified.
Fully agree. I wish they'd left Spaces in, maybe just enabled Mission Control by default. I would pay to have spaces back, rather than MC.

IANAL, and haven't read the patents. But "system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data" and "real-time signal processing system for serially transmitted data" - really? I'm sure people were doing both of these before Apple even existed, and in the case of the second one, probably before anyone involved at Apple or HTC was born. Doesn't sounds very novel or inventive.
Interesting read though, maybe I should start stocking up on Androids ready for the black market!
I think PaaS would be worth mentioning at an introductory level - the difference between managing your own VPS/Dedi/CoLo, and using something like Heroku.
Unfortunately I don't have anything particularly constructive to add, just that I hope this does take off - it's definitely needed and I would be a customer.
The reason I'm not a customer yet (and there is a domain or two I'm toying with picking up) is that I don't know that you are going to be around next year, and I've no idea what happens to my domain in that situation. As much as I hate GoDaddy, I don't see them disappearing any time soon so unfortunately that's where most of my domains currently are. Can you do anything to reassure me on either of those points? Do you know how much you need to make to stay in business and make it worth your while, and how likely are you to meet that?

An interesting read. I'm born and raised in the UK, 23 years old and would love to move to NYC in the next few years. The problem for people outside of the UK is always going to be the immigration process - I'm having trouble figuring out the chicken and egg problem (job first, or move first?) and how exactly I should go about moving.
That aside, I found this article interesting, especially with regards to rent. I loved every second I've spent in NYC, hopefully I'll be there to work eventually.

I believe Reddit does this for the first X hours of a submissions life - to discourage bandwagons, and so that newer submissions that may otherwise be overlooked (due to having less initial upvotes) will get a chance. I agree that it's a good idea and something that may work well on HN's new page.
I have started automating a lot of the smaller, repetetive tasks. It doesn't save a huge amount of time, just removes small annoyances and friction. One example is that I'm new to OSX, so I was playing with Automator and have used it to create a command which brings up my entire development environment. This saves only 1.5 to 2 minutes each time, but it removes that friction when I get home from work I can just put my laptop on the sofa and have the dev environment load while I make a drink.
At work we have to create performance reports monthly for a particular client. The procedure has always been to do it manually, which takes around 4 to 5 hours. Writing the code to automate this in C# took less than 4 hours and now the reports take 2 to 3 minutes each month. Time well spent, money definitely saved.

Sorry for the curtness, that reply was from work. I actually found this site for the first time last week while searching for the subject of this very thread - I had reinstalled OSX and in the process ended up with Skype 5. I'm thankful that sites like this exist!
That screenshot was to point out that when changing from "automatic" to "custom", there was no difference ie the setting Google's automatic setting settled on was "full pelt".

Exactly, this is a mistake made by almost everyone who has reported it! Large companies have their recruiters send emails like this out all the time.

According to your story, she said "none of her clients have ever been interested in such an arrangement" - not that NOBODY IN THE WORLD was interested.
Going to her manager was VERY low, I actually feel bad for the recruiter for the way you handled this.
