I retired a several years ago (2018). I'm 60 (2022) now.

I was getting $150/hour. I charged by the hour.

I live in Nashua, NH. I think location really effects what you can charge.

Over the 4+ years I worked as contractor, among things I worked on:

- Radar displays/GUI (solo, in person, job shop).

- Laser scanning (solo).

- Medical scanning/GUI - the computer vision part (solo)

- Computer vision for protecting operators (solo, job shop).

To get work, I talked to former employers (direct) and sometimes the indirect kind (through a job shop).

I love these pens (TUL). I was also surprised that they weren’t mentioned.

I have played with Python on my tablet (Pythonista). Does that make me an “em-bedded” programmer?

As the “man of the household”, my jobs include repairing the mailbox and putting spiders outside.

When the wife tells me there is a spider in the shower I reply: "Oh, you mean Steve?"

Spiders eat the mosquitos so that's plus.

I'm a lazy software developer.

I can't take a book and make myself learn ("push"). Instead, I find a project I'm interested in and let it "pull" me in. Sort of the difference between studying a French book ("push") and actually going to live in France ("pull") with French people. You still bring the book of course.

Not sure what's going with your account but I upvoted you.

I use Waze (on the iPhone) and it doesn't have that problem.

My IDE is VS2017. I'd like a couple of things:

1. It would be nice to right click on a file in the solution explorer and have the menu include "Open File Location".

2. When working with C++, it would be nice is it helped with #include's i.e. give me the relative pathname. Don't make me compile it to find out if the file address is right.

Put you retirement funds in something like Vanguard. Vanguard is customer owned but any low load broad based index fund will work.

I'm a longtime Widows developer but I use Visual Studio for all my Linux projects. I used to use VisualGDB but the Visual Studio is better now.

What I really objected to, was that I would be liable for estimated loss of profits.

I can usually handle 1 or 2 page contracts but when I see something like this, "What other thing are in here." and I give it to my lawyer.

I've never had a problem crossing stuff out.

This was an email I sent to a company I wound up working for after we (my lawyer and I) changed their 9 page "standard contract":
