Sorry to piggyback on this. I applied for a Director role at DDG about a month ago. Had the autoreply which said DDG would follow up whether it was a yes, let's talk! or a nope, sorry. But nothing at all which was a bit disappointing. The role has been taken down for a few weeks now. I wasn't looking for a new position at all but the description strongly appealed and it was DDG, a company I'd admired for years (and fully remote!).
The IA are trying to drum up support by stating that the publishers want to destroy libraries, which obviously makes them sound really awful. But publishers just want the IA to stop offering their copyrighted works for free to anyone at all times without paying any kind of license fee, which is not how a library works.
They don't want to 'squash lending'. They are delighted with public libraries who license books and lend out a discrete number of copies at any one time for a limited period of time. They don't like the Internet Archive version which is 'we shall upload any book we find and allow anyone to download it and keep it, forever'.
The publishers would like the IA to stop doing that. If the IA wants to keep offering things which are out of copyright or which the copyright owners aren't going to challenge, great. Go for it. This isn't an assault on the concept of a library which is what the IA is trying to pretend. It's a challenge on the IA's pretense that they are a library and not a stock of pirated books, amongst other items.

It's not copyright law, it's the agreements that YT has with copyright owners. No one is going to license their content to YT if the site allows anyone to download whatever is there.
No chance. YT has 2bn+ unique logins a month. China only has 800m internet users max. Further the video streaming landscape in China is much more fragmented than outside the country where YT is dominant.

I think it depends on the show in anime. SPOILERS FOLLOW. Erased is not a parallel world, but someone trying to change their past. Madoka finds Homura repeatedly doing whatever is possible to save Madoka. Steins:Gate is timelines and parallel worlds (think of how many times Okabe again and again tries to save Mayuri). Girl who Leapt Through Time is the Groundhog Day story, same day over and again; bit like Tatami Galaxy. No idea where something like Haruhi Suzumiya might fall where time is played with in many different ways.
Meanwhile Evangelion (the later films) and Attack on Titan both seem to be veering towards some kind of inability to stop the same grand narrative cycle repeating again and again...

The Copyright Directive is targeted at large "online content-sharing services" - in effect, services like YouTube, not messaging apps - and says that they are liable for what they host. This means that (1) they need to seek a license for any copyrighted content and (2) if they can't do that, find out a way to stop the copyrighted content from appearing.
Plus, member states are now in a two year period to get all this stuff into national law. So nothing is required right now, and chat apps are firmly and completely off limits for this legislation.

1. The record companies won't be happy with Spotify encroaching on their turf and will take their music away (see: Netflix).
2. There's far more to record label activities than releasing music. Production, promotion, marketing, distribution. How do you make a name for yourself in the modern music landscape when anyone can upload their music onto Spotify? Name a popular artist that doesn't have a large record company behind them, besides Chance.
There are three major music publishers (UMG, Sony, Warner). As long as you have contracts with them, you'll have nearly everything.
If (i) you have mainstream taste and (ii) you're not in a market with a substantial domestic recorded music market like, oh I don't know, India, where the majors hold a minority of what people like to listen to.

YouTube don't need a license because they say they are covered by safe harbors / DMCA, so the record companies have negotiated separate agreements with YouTube. The fact that safe harbors were designed for passive intermediaries like ISPs and not a service like YT that promotes and makes money and gets value from all the music people upload (including record companies) is glossed over by YouTube.
