We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster. This is a global emergency beyond any doubt. Much of the very fabric of life on Earth is imperiled. We are stepping into a critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis.

Fly.io and Render.com are alternatives to Heroku. How do the two compare in terms of maturity? Can they both be trusted with production apps?

Some apps that I purchased before in full, later turned into subscription based apps(giving me a year of free subscription). This made me feel bad and I lost my warm and fizzy feelings towards these apps.

That said, I understand why they are doing it. It doesn't make sense whatsoever to receive one time payment and provide updates forever.

We recently switched our app Genius Scan to a subscription model, but tried to do it The Right Way: users who had purchased the pro features automatically got subscribed to our Plus plan for life.

New users will have to subscribe though, as it's the only way to be sustainable.

We also introduced a new plan, Ultra, with more advanced features. This way, we still get a chance for long time users to support us if they upgrade to the Ultra plan.

We collectively asked for more product/service diversity, more on-demand personalization and lower prices and we got it.

Hydro isn't the panacea. It's destroying ecosystems. Climate change is a problem but the biodiversity collapse another one.

What are alternatives to Google Analytics for mobile? We'd just like to collect basic events (eg. this feature has been used), number of active users, OS usage… nothing fancy.

There are alternatives to Google Inbox (Spark, Superhuman - that I just discover) but I don't want to add a third-party that can read my emails.

Given that Inbox is sunsetting and the trust issues I have with Google in general, it's the first time since I created my Gmail account that I'm considering moving to something different.

If Fastmail or Protonmail had the Inbox features such as Snooze and grouping of emails with the quick "Archive", I wouldn't hesitate a second.

It's not enough for a full context switch but if you start opening your email, you might stay there longer than the 20-40 seconds and become a full context switch.

Eye break is a great idea.

There is a difference between being abandoned and having the latest shiny new features. Not that I don't understand your feeling.

So no, Instapaper is not "lucky" to still be in the App Store.

Don't assume that because Instagram is well-known that they have more seniority and the rights and abilities to do whatever they want.

It's a bit strange to call an app "Abandoned" because the last update was 6 months ago. When an app is mature and stable, it doesn't require a steady flow of updates to be good and useful (except as a way for developers to show that they are still active and "please" their users).

I'd call it abandoned if it didn't fit the platform standards, if it was buggy, if it didn't run on some new devices…

Maybe they should also rethink how Facebook impacts people's lives in a negative way (https://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/how-facebook-makes-u..., https://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/12/study-using-facebook-makes-y...). The problem is that's incompatible with their business model: capture people's attention.

Treat the causes (some of them at least), not the consequences.

Have you been able to get in touch with Apple about this or were you told to just submit a radar? Do you have any sense if this is something Apple might fix sooner now that it's getting some exposure?

I see how you can call this independent (eg. not a big hosting company), but for me the independent web is people hosting their content and keeping control on it. The ideal case is everyone hosting on their own machine (the old WWW?)

Has anyone tried it with a Heroku database? I'm getting an error message saying that the SSL certificate cannot be verified.

In theory the person who leaked to the press could be prosecuted for leaking information. But press has the right to protect their sources, which prevents that from happening, so you get a balance between information and privacy. That wouldn't be the case if it was leaked to the general public. You'd also leak passports, SSN etc. to the general public.

Where did you find that this will be released in the future? There are public persons in this batch of data and it makes sense to know this information but there must also be a lot of private information and I don't think it would be right to have them released in the while. My guess is that this is the main reason why it's not publicly released.
