Linux has never been better

I replace Windows with Linux on my last Windows computer this week. A mixed bag of old motherboard, new-ish graphics card etc. I think I would have had a hard time to get an acceptable usage experience without using an LLM to guide me through the hiccups. (Odd window manager boot problem, sound device issue). But I agree, the Linux ecosystem seem to have something for everyone and on modern hardware it behaves relatively well. LLM as your local tech support works surprisingly well too.

That said. The wardrobe is still there and working great many years later.

The Pax with sliding doors took me a really long time to put together. Long enough that when my brother in law (who doesn’t like assembling stuff) asked if I recommend them, it was a solid No.

I knew a runner that was wearing his body down. His joints where giving up. I predicted he would become a cripple. He wouldn’t stop running despite knowing. He was addicted. Some stories about prompting agents feel like that to me.

The Jurassic park crew supposedly had a lot of money, and I would argue that any computer nerd, at the time depicted, would have gone with that combo. SGI for Unix and the power and Macs for admin. I would have.

I live in Sweden, but would happily live in most European countries. Yes, some are less well functioning, and many that have joined the EU have significantly improved their living standard (not always counted in GDP), since joining the EU. There are always things to complain about in any country, and the hardest thing for most people to do is actually make a fair comparison, as they haven’t lived in another country.

I have lived in the UK, in the US and spent significant time running a startup in the Netherlands, and half the family lives there. I have relatives in Spain and in Switzerland. I have helped setup startup subsidiaries on all continents.

At this point I wouldn’t move to USA if you paid me double the salary. There are more things in life than money.

That said, if (or when) the progress of the LLMs flatten out, then I think even Europe can catch up in a few years. If they don’t, and that seems unlikely to me, if the required compute needs to increase at the rate it does today, then I am not sure any of us can predict where society ends up.

No. That is just false. There is a very well developed ferry/commuter boat network. [1] The cost on some lines are included in the Stockholm public transport pass. A five day ticket is €12/day. No need to buy a boat.

I have one 4,1 standing around in the cellar. Probably not with a nice GPU, but I now need to see what type of Linux machine it will become.

Yes. In the same way that spreadsheets are the dev tools for non-devs, LLMs could step into that role, but with much more powerful end result. With the caveat that in the same way you can create a powerful foot-gun with a spreadsheet you can probably create a foot-cannon with an LLM.

I am running Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex and Docker Desktop on a last generation Intel Air, that admittedly has 12 GB RAM. One has to be a bit careful with more apps. But I look forward to an upgrade. Maybe a Neo, but more likely a second hand M.

Several European countries have something like it. I can only find a very brief article in English on Wikipedia and a longer one in Swedish. But it seems to be reasonably successful in my experience. The Swedish article mentions: Sweden, other Nordic countries, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy.

One thing I try to do is cultivate new friendships through new hobbies. Some of them develop to become lifelong friendships. It takes time and effort, and to me it is worth it.

They live in a bubble and not a lot of the surrounding world makes it in to them. I know it is hyperbolic, but I lived there for a while and I stand by that opinion.

I mostly hang out in small online communities that essentially become tightly curated by people I am interested in interacting with.

Very interesting. What size team does it take to build this, incl. analysts, project managers, product managers etc.? How long did you spend in analysis before building and the how long to first customer using it?

I arrange gigs with real bands playing music. At least that will take quite a while to replace with AI. I am curious to see if we will get a backlash eventually around the content. It will probably be a mix of everything.

Storytelling didn’t go away when the theatre was invented. Theatre didn’t go away when cinema arrived. Cinema wasn’t replaced when radio arrived, ad that wasn’t completely replace by TV, etc. It is a mix of things these days and it will probably remain that way.

Developers build many of the applications that make the platform desirable. Steve Ballmer at least seem to get that part. ;)

I have a funny/annoying thing with Claude Desktop where i ask it to write a summary of a spec discussion to a file and it goes ”I don’t have the tools to do that, I am Claude.ai, a web service” or something such. So now I start every session with ”You are Claude Desktop”. I would have thought it knew that. :)

It gets even better putting the sand from the shoreline with water under a microscope. Lots of little things moving around.
