Let’s say they do alter the price based upon demand (which it sounds like they won’t do at a granular scale like the other commentators are suggesting). It will punish customers who come later, but reward early customers who buy in bulk. Imagine scalping ice cream in a parking lot on a hot day! But seriously, i would like to see non linear scaling of prices for people who buy a lot at once, for scarce items. Everybody gets a little seems like a more moral way to handle scarcity, but Walmarts new pricing system won’t handle this. Oh well. Overall though still a fun development.

Interesting take! I like how the app embellishes the real world rather than replacing it. What’s more interesting is that old me would like this app way more than young me.

When young me had wanted to date and was lonely enough to use an app, just seeing an attractive person in real life could be stressful and therefore awkward if it felt like a high stakes, rare opportunity…something this app would make worse.

However, to older me who doesn’t care anymore but would want to meet an interesting somebody, no stress, this app could make a great ice breaker. A neet niche you’ve found!

Searching for jobs in ML/NLP, I’ve seen many companies specify they want 5+ years experience in both natural language processing and 5+ years experience in neurolinguistic programming. Always gets a laugh. The poor job poster. Knows they need nlp, and there’s this thing called neural networks, but can’t quite understand what all these acronyms are…

Should be fun but is just depressing. How about a reverse trolley problem where good things happen? Now that i think of it, this might become the next great life/career planning tool…:)

A moment of reflection: on the positive trolley tool, not being able to pick both good things is its own tragedy (let’s say family and career). But the reverse doesn’t behave the same - the decision to pull the lever for two negative outcomes doesn’t cause me to feel joy that only one of the disasters occurs and not both!

This is really cool. I was thinking the one biggest contributions to the feeling of public spaces being "not as nice" in the united states vs Germany/Europe is not the views or lack of money invested, but background car noise. You can hear the sound of a background highway almost everywhere in the USA, whereas the background world in for example Germany is much much quieter. And of all the ways cars make noise, I thought there was nothing to do about the sound of tires slapping the road.

The page points out the intent is to reduce tire noise in the cabin. I can see this being a marketing angle to sell it to the average driver, but will this mechanism lower tire noise for everyone or just the driver?

It’s the same trade off in all secure systems. Reducing false positives in exchange for false negatives. Implementing new secure standards would have disproportionate effect on preventing legitimate voters from voting, for very small gain in preventing bad actors. Research from some years ago had the ratio being a few orders of magnitude difference. Stopping 300 legitimate votes from being cast to prevent 1 fraudulent vote makes no sense. In any case, these shenanigans can get you a felony and we’ve repeatedly seen very low rates of this kind of fraud.

That is to say, you can swing more votes in more effective and legal ways than flubbing mail in ballots.

On the other hand, being able to land such a job with no substantial checks who you are is pretty crazy. You would think a six figure employee would warrant at least that amount of attention!

This is one area i believe laws are needed to warp the market. If it costs $0.50 more to make a compostable container, you can bet most companies will buy the cheap plastic.

I’m shocked at the single use waste that can be found in the restaurant industry. One of my favorite places used plastic for everything: cutlery, plates, cups. Their trash bins would be filled every day, and for what? To save a few cents? I feel customer facing plastics should all be compostable as a first step, if also for its social awareness impact.

What’s the best way to develop good policy? Pin point a few industries with maximum benefit/minimum cost to legislate for and expand from there? Or write a more holistic law that the entire population could then collectively weasel around, but it would be “fair” and “make sense”?

Reading this i just think of the Fassbinder movie The Third Generation, where the protestors, in causing civil disobedience for their higher values, are really supported and lead on by the commercial interests of their parents.

In this case, while the protestors say they are against all car manufacturers, only Tesla is new to the massively automotive dominant corporate scene. Their ideological stand only serves the entrenched powers.

But very typisch Berlin in any case, no one can be surprised!
