I upvoted this, because I think it's definitely a good way to stay focused (and I should be doing a better job of it, too). but the issue with his analogy is that brushing your teeth is fairly routine. you go about it at pretty much the same time every day, and you don't have to think about it.

working on your idea, however, is different each and every day. some days, the challenges are greater. some days you may need more than 30 minutes.

The cost of switching is a high barrier for many people.

Changing from Windows to Ubuntu requires you to find equivalents for all of the software you need.

Changing from your browser -> Firefox = most websites will still work, no additional effort on anyone.

Changing from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice forces you to ensure all the documents open correctly and others can open yours correctly.

It's not always so black and white.

I would recommend making a Facebook VM if you really want to get on. This helps on two fronts: 1) You must REALLY want to get on facebook if you go through the extra step of booting up a VM 2) They can track all they want inside your VM since you use it ONLY for facebook.

In the future, they should create the microholes and keep the logo dimly lit in the orientation that faces the user when they open the laptop. Once the laptop is open, the array of LEDs could change to make the logo oriented the current way.

There is already something similar on one of the numerous android handsets out there where the 4 hardware keys turn 90 degrees when you switch from portrait to landscape mode. Not quite as polished, but similar in concept.

For me, only my closer friends are on G+. Unfortunately, this is the same group of people who don't post on FB, so similarly, my G+ is pretty quiet. It's nice though - really cuts out the "noise". In a way, I don't mind if it stays this way.

really impressive and fast work! for me, however, I would like to see an implementation of Dalvik VM as a "card" similar to how they've managed to boot Ubuntu/LXDE as a "card". That way, we could retain the best of both worlds - webOS + android apps. This would be akin to the Alien Dalvik project on the Nokia stuff. Does anyone know what it would take to port Dalvik over? It must be possible, but this is outside of my area of knowledge.

To reply to your last statement: Some of the families that we know continue to discipline their children during college. In the case that they only have a single child, that means the family picks up and moves to the college town of choice. I would be curious to know how these kids fare in the workplace after college.

On the other hand, I have seen other families who have treated their children with strictness (where the parents were themselves teachers/professors), have their kids rebel against them in college. Their personalities did a complete 180 as they were suddenly relieved of the harsh treatment, which often landed them into trouble.

I am one of those kids who was pushed into piano at age 4. I'm not going to lie - I hated playing for maybe the first 3 or 4 years. My dad would sit with me and force me to practice over and over again. But one day, something clicked, and to this day I have a greater appreciation of music than any of my peers, and I also have a love of music that can only come from myself. I didn't need my dad to force me to practice - I wanted to.

I think that my parents eventually switched tactics during my childhood (for better or for worse) after they were convinced that I would choose a path for myself that wasn't detrimental. I'm thankful for that - I find that I have pursued a lot more hobbies on my own and experienced things that didn't fit the asian mentality.

There is a reviews section on both sites that have pretty decent contributors. I've looked up many a component/bike there to get a good idea on what's worth it and what isn't. Some items even have photos, and some people have posted how much they paid and where they bought it from. I wouldn't count them out as "spam". There's useful information buried under a site from the 90s.

One idea i've really been thinking about is traffic analysis over time.

Where I live, traffic is highly variable. If I leave 5 minutes later one morning, there might be no traffic at all, but if I left another 3 minutes after that, I would be stuck in heavy traffic. If there was some way we could track the rate of traffic over time (say, plot out the mph between 7am-8am) every morning, I bet after a month we could figure out the ideal times to leave for work.

Google maps already uses crowdsourcing for its traffic data, so maybe that's the way to go. I would need a large sample size though. I researched a few cities and Houston, TX has sensors that use the toll RFIDs to determine traffic conditions. There are tons of other applications for this data, too. Think of shipment or delivery companies (UPS...), among others.

ive had the same experience. i set up a wiki for a large multi mil project for a group of non technical employees, and brought so much additional work on myself (can you edit x page) that in the end it just wasnt worth it. some people just dont understand that they can edit the pages themselves.

I've found that an e-book whether in the form of an ipad or Kindle like device is great for reading for pleasure. Novels and News articles fly by for me.

However, when I try to read any technical book on my Sony reader, I feel frustrated. I love jotting notes down when I'm learning, and I constantly flip back and forth between pages. Nothing beats a real book imo, and as much as people want to push technology in classrooms, I still don't think it's conducive to learning.
