Great read.

One of my favourite quotes is "motivation follows action". Often times I've found myself loath to do something, but once I start "revving up" (at work, it might be starting with something simple like a small refactor; at home, it could be committing to simply washing one plate of the stack I have remaining) I find I gain the motivation to keep going.

They need to make money somehow.

Yes, because their profit margins are that low (!).

Considering Apple charges you £500 for a phone and £1000 for a laptop, I'd expect a bit more in terms of default cloud storage. 5 gig (and the 16 gig the cheapest iPhone 5S model offers) are incredibly stingy.

Alcohol, plastics (which leech from containers into the liquid they contain), pesticides (on fruits, vegetables)—there are a host of environmental factors that reduce our testosterone levels.

And as for anxiety, I think our modern urban lifestyle far increases our anxiety levels compared to our ancestors.

The human body was not meant for the world we live in!

I'd think the opposite. Since she is used to having to work hard from a young age, she will be more successful in life.

Others who coasted through—whom were used to everything being relatively easier—will not have the experience she has already accrued when faced with a harder challenge.

Python: Faster Way 12 years ago

Agreed, although it's interesting to see the disassemblies.

Python is a language about readability and conciseness first, performance second.

I would have liked to have seen `map` used in the list comp examples, as well as seeing the tests run on Python 3.

Adding my own two cents here—

- You can no longer put your phone into silent from the volume slider

- You can no longer put your phone into vibrate or silent from the power menu

- They removed the shortcut to "app info" from the most recents menu, and from the notifications menu (I used this to force-stop apps)

- Apps randomly restart themselves; I assume this is a memory leak issue (this is on a Nexus 5, I'd never experienced this before)

- Reduced battery life (night-time battery life is abysmal—my first night with Lollipop I missed my alarm because my phone died)

I was so frustrated by Lollipop I reset my phone to Kit Kat. They removed a bunch of shortcuts, and I really don't understand why.

To to keep your fingers on the home row, in order to have better access to all the other keys in your keyboard.

Having your fingers on the arrow keys mean your hand has to travel that much further to type the other keys—making you slower.

Good tips. Getting in the habit of explicitly searching (/) instead of scrolling is another one.

On the subject of using fFtT (and other motions), there's a plugin I quite like that works well with my mental model of that motion—I often don't want to go to the first instance of that character, but the second or third in that line. EasyMotion[1] lets you do that.

I've always heard a lot of this is due to improper running technique, since shoe technology shifted to a heavily-padded heel. This in turn made people more likely to land on the heel, which sends the shock right up the leg, into the knee.

Barefoot running, and less padded shoes, promote landing on the balls of your feet (as otherwise it's incredibly painful!). Landing on the balls of your feet allows your foot to reduce the force that gets shot up the leg.

Relationships are an investment. It requires some effort but the return on that effort is incredibly high. As I get older I realize how valuable my friendships all are.

It's because you weren't eating any fats. On a low-carb diet, your body uses fat as its energy source. If you don't eat any fat, your body will not willingly consume your body fat.

Excess protein you eat is effectively broken down into carbohydrates as well—so everything was working against you.

With little research

Try it again—/r/keto have an excellent FAQ.

I've posted this on previous ad blocking threads, and I'll post it again because I think it's very relevant—

"Adblock without the plus" isn't the original Adblock (from which Adblock Plus was forked), it's an extension created for Google Chrome once Google Chrome enabled support for extensions. Very disingenuous name. It piggy-backed on the work already done for Adblock Plus (for Firefox).

Adblock Plus for Google Chrome came much later.

Nowadays, I use and recommend HTTP switchboard[0]. It's fully open[1], and offers very powerful customization on what exactly to block on a site.

Perhaps, but are "regular folks" that inclined to buy an Xbox One just to play a few Kinect games? Sales figures suggest not.

The problem with App.net was that it offered nothing new. It was an alternative to existing free, established products—Twitter (and, to an extent, Google+ and Facebook).

This is very well said, and a very good point.

Not all derivative works are strictly bad, in the same sense that copyright infringement (eg, downloading an album on The Pirate Bay to try it out) can be a gateway to purchasing content (albums, concert tickets) a consumer wouldn't have otherwise.
