If you want something router-like, PC Engines apu1d and apu1d4 at $124 and $145 USD are good options, as is the older (but slower, i386-only) alix2d3 at $103.

There are also plenty of micro ATX or all-in-one fanless PCs with dual-NICs in a similar price range. Or dual-NIC Intel NUCs, as well (not fanless).

Is there any evidence that patent issues are what has kept this idea on the sidelines until now?

Alternatively, they don't see it as a mistake at all (as you pointed out, a whopping 68 subscribers) and did the math and decided to go with it.

I'm old enough to remember the cold war. One of the big criticisms of Eastern block countries was that the courts were subservient to the government, that the government was not constrained by the law and that trials were secret.

That would be reasonable, except that on all my searches that DDG fails on, Google works perfectly fine in private browsing from a different IP.

Could you expand on #60? I find that meetups are a great way to meet enthusiasts in a particular area/field/technology. This is especially the case if you're one of the many people running a successful/growing business that is unlikely to ever make a "tech news" article or be a household (tech) name.

I'm not sure why you feel my post was disingenuous. There are many forms of self-protection that we need to ask our government permissions to obtain.

We have a lot of similar restrictions in US workplaces, mostly driven by unions. They are equally as ridiculous.

I've been here for 3 years. I don't think there's been a decline, but I think the usual value of discussion has been strongly overshadowed by the hate and vitriol that winds up in just about every discussion now. Worse, those are usually the top-rated comments. These days, I mostly avoid the comments entirely for that reason.

Higher percentage-wise yes, but not by its affect your paycheck. My property tax is half of what I paid in MA, and it's for a house double the size and half the price - in a suburb of Austin, with a shorter commute to downtown that I had to Boston. My paycheck hasn't suffered in any way to make that trade, either.

Beware that this can come back to bite you. If I look at someone's LinkedIn profile and see a slew of jobs listed in months, not years, their resume is going in the (metaphoric) trash. I need to get at least 2 years out of people, preferably 3 (on the low end).

Some of us pride ourselves on not sinking to the lowest common denominator (i.e. breeding grounds for mediocrity).

I enjoyed seeing all the WPI and other local references from my (long) time in MA.

Let me suggest an alternative that seldomly gets mentioned: the public library. It's free, it's quiet, the Internet is fast and not frequently used, the chairs are sometimes comfortable, and they love it when people hang around all day (these are all assumptions of a US base). Additionally, many newer libraries have big meeting rooms with whiteboards and other materials that are free for use. Capped drinks are usually allowed, and sometimes food (don't make a mess!)

It's by far my favorite "coffee shop." Your tax dollars at work.
