I just had two surgeries with general anesthesia. While I haven't had any cognitive effects in the task sense (surprisingly the opposite), I lost my sense of taste completely and kind of worse than lost. My brain seems to believe food is some kind of poison with some very odd anecdotal events. I tried to make myself eat my favorite rotisserie chicken. I was shocked to see it sliding down the wall, I threw the chicken. I have never been more shocked in my life. The doctor said not to worry, but it will be at least six months before it comes back. Everything tastes rotten, or chemical.

Why cant we just be bilaterally honest? Everyone has at least one. Whats so wrong witb simply answering, "If I could do it over I'd spend my time differently." That seems pretty neutral and good enough to me. I trash talks no one, and you have conveyed honestly you would have spent that time better if you had a redo. I'd rather hear that answer over contrived, tell me what you think I want to hear any day.

If you have a hyperlexic child but the parents are not, nor are they well educated, most of the books quite early are going to male the parents uncomfortable. Even with educated parents, you get well meaning protective measures which are harmful to the child in the short and long term. Children even who arent big readers are harmed when their questions are deflected or ignored. Especially when it starts young. When your answers or you are uncomfortable towards an intelligent childs questions, especially as their parent, they pick up on that. You may intend well, you may want to shield them from the horrors inherent in their question, or prevent anxiety. But they still have the questions, they just find the answers themselves. They stop asking you for many reasons. Ultimately the result is you have left them alone with their questjons, and for bright children particularly the very young it does so much damage, that continues. They've in a very real way, been left alone by even very devoted parents.

Clickbait. Misrepresentation of the article which clearly states the object is near escape velocity with aims at identifying possible explanations and the classification of other similar objects. The article states the relative velocity at 456 +-27 km/s which is much lower than the local galactic escape velocity of 540km/s. Calculating an objects escape velocity isn't a simple comparison of course and depends on many factors, which the cnn article ignores for the sake of a sensational headline. The academic article is an interesting read.

The focus on communication over skills, capabilities, and curiosity has opened a door for fraudulent executives, not to mention it’s ableist.

There is an unaddressed problem of jargon spew, florid business speech which has become pervasive at executive levels inherently destructive to goals.

Particularly in startup and scientific organizations where every dollar matters. Persons who appear productive by volunteering for basic tasks which should be done by an administrative assistant. Productivity by empty volume not relevance or need. Passing on or delegating even basic technical tasks, advocating against fundamental safeguards simply because they do not want to deal with them.

I am not against learning as you go and this is not what i am referring to. These executives and managers are not ones who just have gaps, they are ones that don’t know and refuse to learn even basic concepts well known by high school students or college freshmen. Concepts which would take less than a minute to look up and understand.

They micromanage, take credit for work they have not done, and ultimately will cause your best talent to leave.

This article and those like them self-help fluff. We need to get back to our roots, allowing the fluff of executive culture to pervade instead of fostering creative tinkering has set us so far back. When did handicapping ourselves become the norm?

I’ve been in a special program for adhd through Duke University. Treatment is not supposed to be meds OR coaching, it’s meds AND coaching. While I do appreciate having a team psychiatrist, psychologist, and medical the biggest asset is the flexibility of treatment. CBT techniques did not work for me and the workbook was not a good fit, having a team of specialists that I can contact at any time has been key. Some people can do it with just medication or CBT but most cannot. Another issue is the lack of inclusion of comorbid diagnosis which is more common than not with adhd patients. Getting the diagnosis is great it can be liberating but it can also be traumatic especially when the diagnosis is medication only. It is often the case that developers making the apps narrow the demographic to the point of no real benefit. I personally have often wished for more services such as financial management, meal planning, and work. Apps themselves are limited by the data structures as well. Most adhd patients do not think linearly and it is a disservice to force that on to us. CBT for me was masking heavy which often affects physical health and has been shown to shorten already shorter average life spans significantly. CBT can be harmful and I am wondering why it was chosen. Mindfulness as well is problematic for individuals with adhd.

Planning for predictable disasters and response are not things we prioritize. Shock is an acceptable repeated response to catastrophic failures, quarterly thinking traps, growth assumptions. Multigenerational projects have no chance, we cant even get a decade of continuity.

We fail to plan even for hurricanes adequately or proportionately.

Hurricane disaster response isn’t simply ineffective, it is subject to outside pressures which should never be a part of the process. Governments which intentionally obscure how many deaths have occurred, how costly the damage, all made worse as preventive actions are deemed too costly.

Prevention needs to include building standards which refactor building codes to survive the conditions of their particular environment.

Zoning, preventing new construction in areas which need to be rebuilt every time hurricane knocks them over.

Insurance companies pressure local governments and organizations to score category 5 hurricanes as 4 to avoid paying out their customers. Governments overly concerned with minimizing the damage in order to hide incompetence and save face.

Developers charm local, state, and federal officials to keep building costs low and keep producing structures which are cheaply made and begin to fall apart the minute they are finished being built.

Developers who discourage or minimize transparency concerning risks.

People have their dream homes built believing they will last longer than a 30 year mortgage when in reality these homes will need significant interventions within 10 years.

Often the dialog prioritizes who is at fault before and above actually fixing or responding to the events and helping the people effected.

There is a time for blame and a time for action. When and directly after a disaster is the time for action, blame must be analyzed during response, post mortem must taken seriously, organizations, governments, and corporations must be held to account once those affected are relieved, stabilized.

Blame however is usually addressed during the crisis this allows the framing to be controlled by private interests.

One problem that must be overcome in the US are inappropriate cabinet departments. We saw many examples of this during the pandemic. Some goals are too important to have leadership that is subject to change every 4-8 years. Some departments must be shielded from administration instability issues.

Reactive approaches to a crisis are expensive, more expensive than adequate planning. Certain areas in Florida are repeatedly rebuilt at great cost, costs which could be much lower when proactive planning is prioritized equally with response.

Bad at response and no planning seem to be accepted as too ingrained to change. This is not of course true.
