The first thing I notice is that both the first and last authors of this paper are industry-affiliated. Not to say there's anything inherently problematic with that, but at least raises an eyebrow about the motivation behind this study.
See the paper again (the methods are at the end of the paper). They reported 27 subjects.

I wonder how this study can be used as evidence against determinism, ie., that humans really do possess free will. If the coin toss relevantly affects the person's decision, then it seems like random chance plays a key role in affecting our experience, right?

Hate to rain on this person's parade, but his findings are mostly meaningless. You cannot simply infer neurological activity from a single electrode. Besides the need for a proper ground/reference, you also need electrodes placed in the correct anatomical locations to derive any meaningful insights into attention networks.

The view of brain oscillations driving (or even partially modulating) neural activity is further supported by research involving stimulating the brain using Alternating Currents [1] I'm currently doing my PhD on this topic, and it seems so far that targeting AC (with an entrained frequency) to various motor-related neural networks can actually enhance the motor skill and even motor learning.
Brain oscillations are quite phenomenal, and the causal role of these synchronisations still require further research.
The only way this would be a killer feature in my book is if it analyses my entire inbox to generate the result. It would be more realistic since it is actually based on email and not published writing samples, which are not always indicative of communication.
True, but you have a much smaller "margin of error" (+/- 1 hour) as opposed to the many more inconveniences described in the article.

I would venture the trend is because there are consumers (maybe a significant percentage) who, when comparing different options, simply make a choice based on "bigger is better".
Perhaps it's more practical and better with temporal resolution, but it depends on how concerned you are with spatial resolution too (which EEG is quite poor with).
I completely agree here. Good information here, and lots of potential when you think about it could be applied with other machine learning algorithms that are currently being used with "real-time fMRI". Indeed, I don't think we're far off from reducing the gap between neuronal activity and behavioral patterns, but we need to keep in mind that the brain is incredibly complex, highly variable between individuals, and most of the time, presents quite a poor signal-to-noise ratio with the technology currently available.
I'm actually a PhD student studying this exact technology in Germany. I can say without a doubt that this type of stimulation has proven potential in enhancing cognitive functions (if proper protocol and safety aspects are respected). This is a really exciting field which I think will really explode in the next few years once the montage and paradigms are optimized (which is exactly what I'm working on!)
I've heard many good things about Cologne, but most of them being more geared to the touristic/cultural side of the city. It's apparently one of the most multi-cultural cities after Berlin I think.
As an American student studying for a PhD in Germany, I would say that basically all of the reasons listed here could be applied to Germany as well (except maybe the 30% rule).
Reusing modes can actually be quite good if you're concerned about space efficiency.
For example, having excessive controls in the car stereo might be a bad idea since drivers could potentially be distracted. So having the big volume knob to fine tune the bass level for example would be much more preferable to having six individual knobs that the user would have to look through and find.
