Just ran it against Whisper-Large-V2 on a math lecture (my primary use case for ASR is subtitling math lectures), and it was substantially faster and only slightly worse. Very usable for live transcription though I'll probably stick with whisper for the time being since I don't really need the subtitles to be generated in real time.

A principal dogma on orange reddit is the neutrality of technology. Most people here are opposed to the nigh inevitable incipient use of AI in mass surveillance but don't think that that has any relationship to their use of AI (for example) as "Google that actually works." my understanding is that they factored 15 using a modular exponentiation circuit that presumes that the modulus is 3. factoring 15 with knowledge of 3 is not so impressive. Shor's algorithm has never been run with a full modular exponentiation circuit.

Apple quietly updated Mac Studio configuration options this week, removing the 512GB memory upgrade. As of yesterday, there is no option to purchase a Mac Studio with 512GB RAM, with the machine now maxing out at 256GB.

The Mac Studio starts with 36GB RAM, but there were upgrades ranging from 48GB to 512GB, with the higher tier upgrades limited to the M3 Ultra chip. Now there are options ranging from 48GB to 256GB, with wait times into May for the 256GB upgrade.

Apple has also raised the price for the 256GB RAM upgrade option. It used to cost $1,600 to go from 96GB to 256GB on the high-end M3 Ultra machine, but now it costs $2,000. 512GB was $4,000 when it was available.

Apple has likely removed the option to purchase 512GB of memory because of global DRAM shortages that have dried up supply and caused prices to soar, and it's also probably why shipping times for a configuration with 256GB RAM range into May.

Demand for the Mac Studio has increased due to consumers seeking machines suitable for running local AI agents, which could also be a wait time factor.

Memory scarcity is already having an effect on DRAM pricing, and it could affect PC and smartphone sales in the months to come. Apple is able to absorb higher memory costs in the short term, and it is well-positioned to minimize the effect on consumers because it is better able to secure available DRAM supply than smaller companies.

it depends on whether you're a power user in terms of getting lots of actual work done, or you're a power user (and this seems much more common) in the sense that you spend lots of time tweaking your productivity setup.

hmm last time i tried it, Safari blocked the sites correctly as did Chrome. just tried it again and Safari let me through, so maybe that one's not on Orion.

A selection of recent ones:

- Site blocking with /etc/hosts doesn't work consistently with Orion, it intermittently and inconsistently ignores these rules. (this is sort of niche but it's bizarre for a browser based on WebKit)

- The password manager is busted on certain websites that have a third input box (so a captcha or 2FA code), where it'll fill the password twice

- Kept randomly getting the error "Orion can't open this page: This operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory" with like 10 windows, ~30 tabs open. Haven't seen it recently but like many Orion bugs it is intermittent and hard to reproduce consistently.

- Switching between Chrome and Orion sometimes (inconsistently) switches me to the last Orion window I had open (often on a different Desktop) rather than the one I clicked on.

- On networks where I can form WebRTC connections in Safari and Chrome, I cannot in Orion.

- This was just fixed but until like yesterday, the highlight color in their PDF viewer for ctrl F was a barely visible 10% opacity highlight that was totally unusable.

- Various other intangible performance bugs that seem to pile up when you haven't restarted in a day or two. It starts out really snappy and tends to get slower the longer you've had it open.

I should note that the pace of developement would be much faster if they would open source the browser, but instead of that they keep starting new, closed source projects that will likely have the same fate. Their Linux Orion port is from scratch, none of their macOS code is reusable.

Given that Orion (which I repeatedly attempt to daily drive due to the dearth of browsers meeting my requirements right now on macos) is still full of bugs that hamper usability, and seems to introduce new ones with every update, I don't know why Kagi insists on overextending itself like this. They just started porting their broken browser to Linux, they're creating a maps app, all while they clearly do not have the manpower to finish the projects they've already started.

That would certainly be interesting, though I don't know of any matching definition in knot theory. There is a notion of "positive" and "negative" crossings, so you could define the positive and negative unknotting numbers by asking how many of each you have to swap. Unfortunately, in their example, all torus knots can be drawn with all positive or all negative crossings.
