I'm not 100% sure if this is a fit for your needs, but Redash[1] (open source, but there is a hosted version too) you can query spreadsheets and APIs (within limits).

Our JSON data source is not merged yet [2], although available already on the hosted version.

We (Redash) had public AMIs for AWS and GCP for a long time now. But recently started the process of creating a proper marketplace listing with them and DigitalOcean. Needless to say that we're still working on the AWS and GCP listing, while the DigitalOcean one is already live. As with everything, they created a simple and nice experience for the vendors.

We (Redash) have a similar setup (Docker Compose based) and we used Packer to build the DigitalOcean image. Our setup is public on GitHub, in case you want to copy:

Now that I know redash fits my needs, I will spend the time needed to read the docker compose file and trace those steps and assemble the pieces necessary to run redash directly on my Linux server without Docker.

Glad to hear it fits! Note that if all you need is Postgres support, don't bother with installing requirements_all_ds.txt and you can skip some of the system packages we install.

We’re a small team and have to prioritize. At some point maintaining the Mac setup was too much, and Docker covers most use cases.

But setup for Postgres should be relatively simple as the extra dependencies required are minimal.

If you want you’re welcome to post a question on our forum (discuss.redash.io) and I’ll follow up with pointers on how to set it up on your Mac.

This is interesting, but I believe a better solution will be to use something like hygen[1] to maintain a set of generators for your project.

I personally find it useful, although I can see why it feels out of place.

If you do decide to remove it, I think it's worth adding as an example in the README.

We're looking for someone to redesign the application. The goal is to create a style guide we can apply to the application. Preferably someone who is a "full stack" designer, i.e. can do both the design and also write CSS. Collaboration will be via GitHub and all the work will be open source. Great opportunity to explore how design/UX work in an open source project can be done.

This is a scoped project (paid of course), although we would love the person who takes this to be able to help us from time to time when we add new UI or when UX questions arise. Maybe in the future this can become a full time position.

Most people don't care about the source code, but we have a huge link to the setup guide [1] (and there is a link to GitHub in the footer).

Also I'm not sure where you bring the "but it doesn't receive bug fixes" statement from? We have a documented upgrade process [2] for the images you create using our documented setup guide.

Just to make sure someone doesn't get the wrong impressions from your comment: Redash is 99% open source (and I'm going to close this gap this month[1]), mature and actively maintained. The friendliness is subjective, but we're not trying to please everyone :-)

[1] Sometimes it's easier to prototype new things in the SaaS version, but everything reaches open source eventually. There is practically one feature that wasn't open sourced until now, and I'm going to add it to the open source version now.

One correction about Redash: Redash is open source and you can host it yourself too, in case you have an issue trusting a 3rd party with your data.

The proxy approach is something I thought about several times, but I am aiming at providing a collaborative tool, where it's easy to share the results and work with others. Depending on a proxy running on a user machine breaks this.

But having said that, I'm sure there are many whose needs Franchise will fit very well. So kudos on launching a great tool! :)

Why not? You can assign a domain to S3 buckets. It can be just as pretty as it is today. The only difference is if he serves them directly from S3, the domain will be different from the creation API.

But considering the additional features he's planning on adding, he will probably need to proxy S3 anyway, so not sure if it's worth it in this case.

But for something of the scope of the current API, S3 is the perfect solution.

Why not host them on S3? You can probably serve them directly from there too.

As someone who is also building a company [1], I found this post (and the others on your blog around the topic) truly inspiring.

Actually it was a big part of why I decided to use Todoist and become a paid user. I was using it on and off for a long time (been a paid user in 2010!) but seeing how you run things, made me stay this time.

If anyone is looking for an alternative that will probably be around for a long time, check out Todoist [1]: they are bootstrapped and profitable and been around for 10 years.

In terms of product - it's as simple to use as Wunderlist, but does have a few extra features. And they are cross platform like Wunderlist.

At the moment (and I hope to keep it this way), it's not only the core of Redash that is open source -- it's the whole product. There are a few features that are introduced on the hosted version first, for ease of development. But most of it goes to the open source first.

As we (Redash) use Discourse as well, it will be only fitting, to have Discourse use Redash :-)

Well, actually there is a hosted SaaS version of Redash too (https://redash.io). This is what sponsors the work on Redash.

Exports to CSV or Excel are already available. In future releases we will add support for full reports with visualizations and everything.

It's actually already possible with some scripting and our API, but I want to add it into the product itself.

Just don't run the script as is on existing server. It's designed to run on a vanilla server.

You mean as a PDF or email?

In the tables we show only 2 digits after the dot, but that's easy to change (in code; and later on will be configurable). Never tried to plot sub-second time series, so don't know what will happen - but unlike most platforms, you can modify Redash to support this :)

It's true that it's extra work, but it's a one time investment which you can reuse for all your visualization needs later on.
