An interesting strategy from Facebook.

Although the privacy related changes were somewhat expected, the timing and aggresive timeline will likely play out in Facebook's favor.

While giving users a 1 month grace period to either comply (share their data) or delete their account already seems like a pretty aggressive window that limits the ability for users to fully assess options or migrate existing groups/chats to alternative platforms, the short timeline combined with the on-going pandemic, and the fact that WhatsApp has become one of the primary means of communication for many around the world will likely lead to a very limited drop in users leaving the platform as a result of this policy change.

Beyond Febuary, once users have already shared their data, there is likely minimal incentive for groups or individuals to overcome the network effects and move to another platform in the short term.

Very impressive results.

This seems like it could be a great replacement for searching/creating your own stock photo/images.

Hopefully all output is copyright friendly.

Does anyone know if these types of bug bounties are negotiable?

As several people have mentioned, hackers can sell to the highest bidder and having proof that you have an exploit is probably sufficient, but what if Apple was willing to pay as much as the highest bidder?

This may also likely convince people who have sold bugs to reach out to Apple.

It probably costs them a fraction of the PR spend or risk of data breach/user exposure etc.

Wow. Never thought about this approach to leveraging RAM for cameras. Awesome guide!

Can anybody chime in regarding the resolution limit (640x64) -- If this is for memory reasons, could we pick alternate values such as 200x200 as long as the total pixel count is the same?

I tend to use both and keep switching between home/work but it just feels like FF is still not as snappy in terms of performance (could just be my perception -- no actual data on this one).

I think the Manifest V3 change on ad-blocking is probably a big win for FF and will likely make many people switch over to FF permanently.

This is awesome! Haven't heard of this before.

It's definitely a great way to scale some of the challenges in recruiting for these startups.

A couple of ideas/suggestions:

- Clarify what is meant by "Visa Required". Is that an offer to sponsor/transfer or saying that you wont. I'm guessing the listings were scraped from AngelList, so it might have gotten lost in translation

- It would be great to open this up to non-engineering specific roles at those companies (perhaps in the future) -- It's getting hard to find good Designers, PMs, PMMs etc who are looking to work at these startups -- maybe not all roles but product specific ones.

I've been thinking about this problem for a while as well.

The somewhat oversimplified approach is to use iOS/Android devices with you in charge of installing any new apps and also inbuilt adblockers. However this still doesn't prevent email phishing.

The more restrictive option would be to use a router level / AdBlocker whitelist for websites they can access.

Ex: Facebook, Google, YouTube, Utilities, Banks etc. This way any phishing domain will get blocked. Obviously highly restrictive but probably the safest bet. You can always add new sites as they need them.

Paywalled, but based on the free paragraphs, I was kinda surprised that it didn't talk about the other factors that may affect sleep.

Currently reading 'Why we sleep' which is a fascinating book about the importance/history/evolution of sleep across species and time. (Highly recommend it -- definitely regretting all the sleepless/low sleep nights)

At a high level, my understanding is that the duration/quality of sleep depends on physiological, mental and environmental conditions.

It sounds like the focus of the article was on environmental (I would definitely love to sleep with zero light/sound).

Similarly, the 5-10 mins meditation may help, but if you're stressed out or have something on your mind, that can still keep you awake or wake you up.

You can make sure not to eat/drink anything by that time (6pm) but effects of caffeine/other foods you might have eaten earlier can impact your sleep quality.

Finally, the right physiological/chemical changes need to occur (melatonin/REM cycles/tired from physically exhausting activities) for you to actually be sleepy. Most people can't just sleep on command, although, you might be able to build/force the habit.

Interesting change in their business model. Wasn't the initial goal of on-demand scooter companies to give people the convenience of renting without the hassle of owning?

What's the benefit of buying this from Bird vs any other scooter mfg? Unless, this is some sort of rev share where they can let you rent in their network and make money.

It depends on what you mean by less known/powerful

A lot of companies that the general public doesn't tend to hear about are either outside of CPG/outside of your geography/outside of industries you hear about in the news or just private companies or holding companies. Some have really high revenues or # of employees.

A couple of companies I was surprised by revenues:

- Cargill/Koch both have $100B+ revenues

- Exor (Italy/Netherlands) $143B+

Do you have a goal/direction in mind for the end state of the company? (Acquisition, IPO, Lifestyle business etc)

It's totally fine if you don't but I would work on figuring that out with the team, so that incentives are aligned, before making a decision on fundraising.

Also, I've noticed that there's alternative sources of funding for bootstrappers, that seem to be less demanding in terms of equity/growth/returns that might be more appealing.

As in, if you want to hold on to more equity or grow at your own pace.

A great article that was posted on HN: https://medium.com/swlh/alternative-funding-calculus-a-quant...

Uber S-1 7 years ago

Interesting S-1. I was actually kinda bearish on Uber in terms of scale for future growth/profit opportunities, compared to Lyft, but now I feel like Uber has the upper hand.

Yes, profitability is a big piece, but Uber is more diversified, in that they have other rev streams - Food Delivery and Freight, which they are ramping up (Focused on growth for now).

Also, by way of partnerships/equity, they have stakes in a lot of different market leaders in other markets/geographies. These companies are further diversified in terms of other rev streams (payments, commerce, food delivery etc).

Not sure how much of that is captured in the valuation.

SDCs (L5) are definitely a ways off in terms of becoming ubiquitous. Companies are doing fixed route or city/geo-fenced testing and for any of these companies to actually get to Uber's scale will take a long time and maybe Uber can acquire/partner with one/more of these before that happens.

Also, if we consider ride sharing as a commodity, Uber benefits from economies of scale as opposed to other competitors who may operate in smaller regions/markets so that's also going in their favor.

All of this is to say, they are definitely focusing on growth for now (which there is a lot of opportunity for), but at a certain point they could probably start becoming profitable by either reducing costs or ramping up prices (in tiny percentages) and still be better than the alternative.

This definitely seems like an Apples to Oranges comparison.

It is highly dependent on what your goal is / how you want to leverage either of those things.

A bit of perspective on B-school: - The value is primarily in the network you get exposed to (students, professors, industry veterans, alumni etc). This is something that can help you throughout your life. - It's also a great way to switch careers, to a certain extent, or even move up the corporate ladder (some companies even sponsor the MBA) -- both of these you can do without an MBA -- but may require a lot of hustle. - In terms of classes/courses, I would argue that you can get access to 80-90% of the course material / learnings from online courses/MOOCs/blogs etc -- depending on what you are trying to learn.

However, the opportunity cost, especially if full-time, is crazy. It's basically 200K + 2 years of salary.

The Bloomberg terminal on the other hand, is something you can try/use for a year, while working and see if you are getting what you want out of it, and then continue or stop.

Once again, definitely dependent on what the end goal is.

Oculus Rift S 7 years ago

One of the biggest barriers to consumer adoption of VR seems to be the cost.

Is there a reason why it doesn't make sense for the manufacturers to do a subscription service? Seems like everything from phones and consoles to game streaming subscriptions is the trend (and makes sense).

If nothing else, it can help increase distribution and awareness -- at the end of the day, more people using the devices is probably gonna kick off more content creation and economies of scale to produce cheaper/better hardware.

Thoughts?

On first glance, looks like a decentralized Instagram.

A couple of questions:

- What is the business model? If millions of people are on this and there's no ads/monetization -- how is the service covering costs?

- If people had to pay, then it might limit adoption, how are you going to handle that?

- How are you guys thinking about support, monitoring content (removing illegal/copyrighted content)

Neat! I always end up doing the google search to check out IMDb/RT ratings.

Another nice to have is the number of reviewers - I've noticed that some of these movies have high ratings early on (potentially from crew/cast/fans) but then slowly drop to the mean as more people review the movie.

I've always been curious about what YC demo days are like but since it's been limited to VCs/investors, figured I wouldn't be able to attend.

With this change, would it be possible to get a live stream or even a post-event Youtube video for the rest of the community?

If not, would appreciate any insights into if/why this is a bad idea.

Awesome Python 7 years ago

I think it's still a great starting point, especially, for someone who has no place to start when looking for specific libraries. It would be good to annotate with perhaps a Pros/Cons for each item in that list (pull requests, maybe?). So that you can choose whatever fits your needs.

Although they aren't shutting down, I was thinking that even if they did, Apple can just wait for the dust to settle and buy one of the existing/growing players once the technology is proven out (they definitely have the cash to do it).

Spending a lot of money and trying to catch up to Waymo/Zoox/Cruise etc is also kinda hard, even for Apple, because of all of the pieces of the stack they need to work on and access to a very competitive/small talent pool.
