that's correct. You basically end up serving your content to crawlers dressed up in html. it's not very hard to do but it presents quite a challenge. We already do this for blogs where we serve alternate content for rss readers which is an apple and oranges comparison, however the idea is more or less the same. The takeaway is that there is a way to serve alternate content to search engines and it involves following an ajax crawling scheme.

You can make your ajax content crawler friendly by following a specification google currently supports. I'm not particularly sure how much of this spec the other search engines support but it's a good start : https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/

Nice project, but why is it GPL licensed? This makes its usage quite restrictive and impossible to use in a closed source product.

normally all you'd need is a 2 liner utility method to facilitate inheritance. For the rest you can use js as it is with it's actual language features which maybe a little verbose (my only lament so far) and prototypical based but you will begin to appreciate it in the long run. I don't like the exaggerated syntactic sugar that many libs bring in, that try to abstract and tuck away js as it is, making it pretend to be a class based language when it is not. That said, this particular lib's size and the direct problems it tries to solves are done so elegantly. It's hard to ignore the good job the author has done!

Love the idea, very simple and quite fresh. Though I agree with others that the service will require awareness. I doubt people will want to provide personal information without knowing the source. Still I can't help but think that an idea like this will quickly spread. Good job!

You raise a point which is interesting if there was an official word from microsoft that this will be the last version. Right now this is still only speculation. Anyway, from a pragmatic view point SL5 is available today. A fresh release like this is a good reason to rejoice instead of speculating when the next release will be. Out of curiousity, what alternate are you suggesting that has the same unmatched tooling, documentation and support "today"? Specifically, if the mobile/tablet is not your target and your main audience is desktop on mac/windows and perhaps linux(note: with a small effort you can make your app work on moonlight too).

Edit: note also that with a small effort you can target the new windows 8 marketspace and release it as a metro style app as well.

There is still only speculation that this will be the last version. That said, it will most likely fit the bill for a lot of apps in it's current form. If SL5 can give you what you want, I don't see a real problem not to use it to develop your next app. It has the tools now and it's in production now.

What makes you think so? sl4 support until 2013 and sl5 until 2021 sounds like great news for people invested in silverlight. Also despite Maryjo's speculation that sl5 will be IE and windows only, now we know SL5 continues to support the same set of browsers it supported in sl4 on both windows and mac.

Why should it matter? Silverlight is a free plugin supplied by Microsoft. Surely the intended parties can download it if they don't happen to have sl installed. It's an automated process and hard not to know what to do. Also don't forget that this is fallback, so either the end user upgrades their browser (in most cases involving ie6/7 this is not possible) or they install the plugin which is free. Your question is pretty moot at this point because sl has a 60% penetration rate which is not the same 90% of flash but still significant and quite sufficient to invalidate your argument. What if they required silverlight somewhere else? what if this is a corporate environment which is usually 90% of the case and normally this is the user group having trouble upgrading from ie6/7. In these environments it's more common to use sl which is used a lot for LOB apps and the probability rate of them already having/wanting sl is much greater. Edit: forgot to mention WP7. This will work on there while flash won't.

It's very difficult to find a good name that is meaningful(reflecting the business), short and easy to remember (short as in the 5-6 letter range). When the name does not reflect the business at hand, the name can be reused at a minimum. Further more, if you diversify your business and branch out into other areas, your name won't hold you back. To that end, whether the word is foreign or not doesn't really diminish the value of the name and it may even help you find a good name quicker. so long as it is short, has a good rhyme to it and it's easy to remember. This is not novelty either, it's already been blogged to death.

Regardless, the general impression is that adobe is abandoning flex. If adobe themselves are re-investing their efforts in html5, why should anybody knowingly want to adopt flex? I'm sure there will always be a reason to use flex in the future but such reports don't do flex any good in the long run, even if the idea is to allow the community to drive it. Edit: Simply bad timing on adobes part.
