Vektor | Backend Engineer (Elixir) | Full-time | Remote | https://vektor.finance

Vektor’s premise is that Decentralized Finance should be more accessible to those who want to participate yet lack the technical skills to do so.

We are building a product to help these investors and institutions discover, assess, and execute transactions and trading strategies on DeFi, without having to navigate the complexities. All the data aggregation, transaction construction, smart contract handling, and execution overhead is handled by the product, while staying non-custodial.

Previous posters have done a good job to answer your question.

Just wanted to add that some people are looking replacing this 'Proof-of-Work/Mining' mechanism with a different method called 'Proof-of-Stake [0]. Other cryptocurrencies have already implemented this.

If you jump into the blockchain/bitcoin rabbit hole you will eventually come across this :)

Agreed.

Too many companies worry they don't have enough use cases covered and can't forget "key" functionality, leaving them with a bloated and directionless product. Better to keep it simple and work up. Just nail the first use case enough for the innovators to adopt it.

They really screwed over iOS devs here. I have multiple cables as backups and in different bags etc - all need replacing now...except that I can't use the USB-C variant in the power brick :( I also do Android dev...need to get a USB-C to Micro-USB too just for that! Just one big mess.

As an aside, as a Monzo beta tester I can't say enough good things. Currently travelling around Asia and the card works almost everywhere and I pay 0 fees and get the exact Master Card rate. Twice now I've landed with 0 cash in the airport and been fine. I've used the card in over 10 countries outside UK with <1% issues, and often this is better than my Barclays or Amex.

This is just a small benefit but when you put the whole product/experience together from the app + in-app customer service + the card + etc, it just works so well and really comes into a category of it's own. A lot of people say "yeah buy my bank does X too" and while true, they way I look at this is Monzo is like the iPod - other MP3 players had same functionality but this one just works and works damn well.

Can't praise Terraform enough. Just so well designed and a prevents you from ripping your hair out. Great team as well.

Facebook groups/Reddit are quite useful. Search for something related and gently drop a link with explanation, but don't spam people and multiple groups in one go - go step by step to test reception. If you are solving someone's problem they are usually quite receptive to trying things.

Interestingly if you try and set up a Messenger Bot, there is a one-time fee of $99[0] to take advantage of Customer Matching - where they use phone numbers you have to find existing customers to contact.

Just at a quick glance, I can tell you that AWS Lambda now has:

- Scheduling

- Python support.

However, I've not used Iron.io so can't chime in there sorry.

I've been fortunate enough to have been beta testing this for over a month now. What struck me most was a week or so in I noticed I had been (and have been ever since) reading the daily email every day without fail.

Interesting news in West Coast/SV is published right around the time we settle down for bed in the UK so when I wake up I check my inbox and get a snapshot of what happened which saves me scrolling through Twitter and checking other sites.

I've been writing Swift since day 0 of its announcement - the migration issues aren't that big of a deal even for 10k lines of code, especially if you did it at each step. Sure it isn't fun, but everyone knew it was a early/beta language.

After 3.x, their won't be huge breaking changes thankfully.

Personally, only issue that bugged me was slower compilation time.

About significant investment, this is just how Apple is. They don't stop the train for anyone, it's get on or off. Same goes for SDK you compile against, certain features you must bake in etc.

Objective-C is 33 years old, I don't know for sure but I bet it wasn't that stable at the start!

Agreed. Federighi and his team are seasoned vets in building and delivering software to millions.

They aren't naive and know they need to balance end-user benefit with engineering's wishes for maintainability etc. Is the user going to see a vast difference in experience if they re-wrote the Settings.app? Swift is a language, not framework, so it doesn't offer the end-user anything worth caring about.

Swift will probably cost them more than it gains them in the immediate term, but the long-term is what Apple is all about, so I don't think they are concerned about this.

If you haven't seen Kelsey give a talk, well worth watching - really funny guy and intelligent. He gave one on Nomad and Kubernetes that's good.

Yup - I wonder if the article misrepresented the actual change because it seems a bit odd?

This article has a lot of good points but some are really debatable. Not long ago, Hopper (app for flight price monitoring) published their experience in re-doing their onboarding [0]. Some take aways from that go against what this one says.

Ultimately you have to see what works for you and what doesn't. Copy & paste (just like the Social links paragraph funnily) will never just work without some thought.

Fan of Segment. Their team are super helpful. Recommend it. I've not really found a reason yet to not like them. Sure sometimes you need a lit bit of ad-hoc work, but the benefits outweigh the costs in my opinion. Sometimes the engineers aren't in charge of the decision making process on analytics, so selling management an "insurance" policy, which is how I see Segment, is very powerful to get things done. Service provider not working out for you? Switch it. No code changes.

Also, I don't believe the argument you can get away with one provider. MixPanel told me they don't do emojis in email subjects because their CEO doesn't approve of it. Don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I kid you not I have that email and instantly made me look elsewhere for email service - why should 1 person dictate my companies marketing strategy? Segment prevented a lot re-work for this.

Anyway, in short, Segment is good for the market because it means services have to up their game as lock-in isn't as strong...except for Segment's!

I was in Paris this weekend-just-gone and sat on the bench on Sunday on Champs-Élysées watching all these people walking down the road. I thought it had always been like this. Then I saw the police at around 6pm start to ease it up and march in front of the cars to open the roads again and back to normal with cars beeping their horns and nearly hitting cyclists.

Now it completely makes sense why that old French man sat next to me and wouldn't stop talking about the cars and pollution.

Are there any high-profile apps using React Native other than those from FB? Native dev here, but considering an Android port, so wondering if maybe RN would be better.

Benjamin, really like uilang.js. Do you happen to know what animation libraries are being used for iOS or at least if they are custom?
