I have heard that Marvel & DC, don't care about comic piracy at all. Comics are a cheap loss leading funnel for what actually makes money: movies, tv, video games, & especially merchandise.

However, smaller publishers like Titan Comics care about piracy a great deal and attack it somewhat successfully with gusto, because that's the only revenue.

This is approximately the correct breakdown. Its interesting that ⅔ of the combo could be lumped into different kinds of luck.

You can't do much about your inherited or birth situation, but the extremely successful people I know usually have a very fortunate background and also worked hard to expand their future luck surface so that when outrageous opportunity lightning was looking to strike somewhere, they had an outsized chance to be the spot.

They personally are not great people, but the system that has enabled them to hoard personal wealth and leave the streets full of the destitute will be destroyed.

The most important thing, of course, is to eliminate poverty and protect the planet. The next most important thing is destroy oligarch’s power so they don’t continue to jeopardize the most important things. And, practically in a scarcity economy, capture their mis allocated resources for better ends.

Wanting more wealth hoarded by the few is not a good thing to want.

It's much, much easier to live and work in a foreign country today. And it's only getting easier as technology improves.

So let the current oligarchs exile themselves and we'll do what we can to make sure no more Bezos are created again.

I wonder if your school situation has to do how schools are funded in the United States in particular. It sounds like your school needs more tax money from richer parts of the country then where you grew up.

They absolutely do. What I've seen of other countries's welfare states is grand.

I find that most people are successful despite governments, not because of them.

Universal Healthcare. Universal shelter. Public transportation. Environmental protection. Welfare. Universal Education. Massive wealth redistribution. Markets. Most rich countries do these things with the government and are better for it. Huge numbers of Americans are not successful because this country lacks these things, and is actively prevented from having them.

The existing ultra-wealthy are one problem, and tricky.

Systemically preventing oligarchs and aristocrats from arising in the future is another.

The difference in educational levels is economic. If you correct for the income & wealth levels of the international district and match them to american districts with similar levels, you have similar academic results. There's no gap.

The issue occurs with taking averages. The United States is a rich country or a developing country depending on where you look. Few other modern industrialized nations are run this way.

Indeed, if you want the best education in the world, many people come to the American universities (public and private). These American Universities which you can name, sit like jewels surrounded by the serfdom education many Americans experience.

It is the same with primary and secondary education.

The liking and hiding emphasis features are trivial. They hardly matter. If Facebook's post emphasis algorithm was entirely random, very nuanced or specifically malevolent it wouldn't matter.

Only follow people whose posts you find enjoyable and you will find Facebook enjoyable. This is entirely up to you. If you stop enjoying someone's posts, you unfollow them.

Guaranteed 100% success rate. It's not difficult or tricky. There's no gotcha, there's no fee. Most people can figure this out. I'm not sure why this isn't intuitive for the OP or yourself.

No one does any of that for you. Its entirely you. The result is your feed.

I like all my social media feeds because I choose what's in them. It's not the slightest bit difficult.

It works the same on Twitter. It works roughly the same on Tumblr and every social network.

Every single grandstanding "I am quitting this self curated feed platform" post is ridiculous in the same way.

Social media is all about making you feel bad.

Its a platform for people with low self esteem to dream about what their lives could have been. For older folks to remember the past. For the average guy/gal to keep tabs on old flames.

It's amazing what a mirror Facebook is. Your Facebook description resembles very few other people's Facebook. Its nothing like mine.

I briefly worked on an app that had Facebook integration and got to see different people's feeds. Even straight white male programmer dudes like myself, each one had unrecognizably different content in their feeds. Mine is mostly baby pictures, art posts & science posts. Someone elses was entirely niche events and parties. Another was the most banal tabloid celebrity gossip. Another just seemed a random mix of every sort of media. Another was predominantly toxic right wing graphical text posts urging you to be afraid and lots of flags.

What I'm getting at here, is that I don't think Facebook itself is the problem. It's never the problem with a feed that you curate yourself.

That's not a flaw. One reason I prefer Approval Voting is that it makes this clear. Approval Voting works the same as RCV but without ranking. Vote for all candidates you approve of.

The "bayesian regret" is almost as good as RCV, but it's much simpler and doesn't suffer from the misperception you highlighted.

afaik, this is how Facebook does it, but with regional sources of truth. If you signed up for FB in Paris and move to San Francisco, your master profile lives in Europe in perpetuity and you'll use your regional cache forever in the USA. The number of people moving far away from their home DC's should be a reasonably small fraction of the total for it not to matter.

If I 'like' one of my gay cousin's posts on FB, I get the most interesting underwear ads for the next 3 days.

I suspect it boils down to what the ad customers are willing to buy and what they're willing to buy isn't very creative. They buy "people who liked a gay dude's posts" not "People who Facebook knows are super gay and into flashy underwear".
