ugh this kind of stuff just makes me wish DNS was less centralized, even though it's already incredibly uncentralized.. of course it's just all registrars just being a weak point.. as always

you can't selectively turn off junk notifications from apps that you need notifications from.. i want to use the peets app to know when my coffees ready but it spams me with pumpkin spice latte deals..

i can't believe anyone would pay money for their product. It's alpha grade software through and through. Once a large enough company loses enough data through a encryption miss-step or federation issue they're going to pivot off of this product and move on.

The UX for E2EE is full of trip mines that will easily lose your encryption key. You need to be designing a product around people who don't read and just want a slack/discord like format. The amount of times i've lost my decryption keys or my friends have lost my decryption keys because they don't religiously backup their keys is such a dramatic time sync..

well.. alot of times you'll get enterprise or the upper plans with microsoft when using their products in large orgs, and from what i've heard it's essentially meaningless as it all still routes to some help desk in india that doesn't have time or interest helping you

because hn mods refuse to give bad light to tesla and israel, perhaps to avoid a flame war, perhaps to support their own bottom line. idk i just have a rss feed turned on to ingest new posts before they get yanked, and have a hn account with the option to see shadow banned accounts turned on.. and that mostly deals with this..

yeah.. it's amazing how much time and money is thrown at these new cpu's with such tiny diminishing returns for the end consumer. I wish we could do like a 4 year cycle of progress where engineers had longer cycles to innovate and like make a comprehensive upgrade rather than wasting all of these materials for a 10% upgrade that no one will notice.

dude hosting data costs money, why do you think you should get terabytes of data hosting for a tiny price. Obviously they're a stable, good platform, if you've been on them for 15 years. Paying for a good service that you like is like what every other industry does why is email any different..

With Akkoma/Pleroma there's a separate setting for enabling this feature. This is why people choose platforms other than mastodon for the fedi instance as mastodon assumes you have large amounts of resources to throw at hosting. I've gone out of my way to enable the caching of others instances media as it's not uncommon for instances to die and just never come back, and i'd rather keep a historical record of things i interacted with historically

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010EUQPPY?psc=1 I started with this book. But honestly there's just alot of reading to do to setup the root cert correctly and supportable going forward. Like the default root cert has too low of ... numbers..There's stuff you want to customize when setting up the root cert that MS doesn't specify and it's kinda a major nightmare, i recommend doing a lab environment and testing.

Likely people who install a CA on a DC don't know admining and therefore i would recommend setting up a new cert. And/or ask why you're even using a certificate authority in the first place. As kerberos authentication between windows is really solid even without a cert authority.

I've used & self hosted matrix and it's... alot to manage and managing the encryption per each device is a headache. It's getting better, and it's getting towards the end of a rewrite using go for it's backend (dendrite) and rust( i think) for it's front end clients (element x). Personally having something that's "modern" and supports all of the silly chat stuff people come to expect, like custom emoji, emoji reacts, and stuff going to ease alot of people into using this rather than xmpp.

I have friends that use xmpp and it's liked for being boring and stable however i doubt non-techy young people will want to adopt it without all of the modern niceties that you have with like discord or matrix.
