Land as a finite resource only affects first tier real estate market markets. You can see this vividly in China where there's a housing glut on aggregate, but not in first tier cities.

Making the concept a little more abstract can help: if you have personal access to capital because you've got collateral, that has numerous beneficial effects, as some of the other commenters here have pointed out. This effect might be less strong in the US because we have relatively well run capital markets that you can invest in. This would be a book length post to dive into all of the details of it but the net effect is plain to see. It's one of those things that looks a little irrational but in practical terms it's a proven benefit.

Everybody wants a platform but nobody wants to spend what it takes to make a platform. That includes things like Windows Phone, Fire Phone, all the glasses, Humane, etc.

As much as everybody hates on OpenAI for chaotic management, they did buy Jony Ive and are presumably giving him everything he wants to build a platform for them. Even though it probably only buys them a 20% chance of success, they haven't doomed the project by underestimating what it takes budget-wise.

And they blew it. Maybe they blew it by not realizing that even long time Apple employees could get arrogant about security. Or maybe it was a loose ethical environment in general. Whatever is it the root or the problem, they set billions of dollars on fire maybe tens of billions, by being unnecessarily cute about Apple proprietary information when they could've been above reproach. They had the resources to hire all the right people with the right knowledge and probably already had them on board.

One of my first gigs as a consultant was to write a project management system for a company that didn't really need a custom project management system. The CEO pulled me aside and told me the only important feature of the project management system was that you couldn't assign the same priority to two features. I would be blamed for making such a crappy project management system, but that's what I was there for. Once I was done, I was told to make myself hard to schedule and expensive.

Over in the past three months I've posted two polls on HN asking if one or both of the OpenAI and SpaceX IPO's would fail, with the definition of failure being dropping below IPO price by the end of the year, or the IPO failing altogether. The votes were against both IPOs succeeding. Albeit with a small sample, the results indicated skepticism early on.

Anthropic could go either way. My guess is that if the financials aren't Enron scale flaming garbage, they'll be fine.

Microsoft IIRC sank a small server farm into the ocean and found that it worked pretty well. Surely there is fiber alongside the electrical cable from offshore windmills, so that's not a totally crazy idea, but it's never going to happen with SpaceX because Elon still craves Trump's approval, and Trump is anti-windmill.

Space data centers are so absurd they are the most Elizabeth Holmes Theranos part of SpaceX. IOW this is the part of the story where everyone with a jot of sense can't be fooled, and all your left with are the willingly hornswoggled.

Just say it with a South African eurotrash accent and it will all makes sense.

Cursor investors and employees are the biggest winners of the SpaceX IPO, even if the IPO flops, they will still get much more out of their Cursor shares than they ever had a right to expect. Some SpaceX employees have been waiting over 10 years for liquidity.

There are no "pretty important" companies with the relatively meager revenues SpaceX has got.
