Why do you conflate socialism and a lack of democracy? Am I wrong in thinking there can be a democratically elected socialist government?

I may not celebrate Thanksgiving (not American) but I would still like to say thanks to hacker news. I don't remember how long ago I discovered it, but it's been an amazing journey. Let it never end. Thank you to this amazing community.

I try to start from the bottom up. I'm "fortunate" to live in a country where we have a saying - The country doesn't have a mafia, rather the mafia has a country. So I'm pretty used to hearing "we need systemic change, individual action is meaningless". But I just keep telling myself to be the change I want to see and - honestly - I see results. I'm not saying I have changed anything, but the situation feels a bit better. And when it comes to democracy the elected officials are a direct representation of the peoples of the country.

Ironically the whole GDPR mess made it easier for me to use ddg first. I just don't have cookies, so every time I use google I'm greeted with that amazing consent form, so I just stick to ddg unless it's really necessary.

To quote a meme... "por que no los dos?" I have been using DuckDuckGo since I don't even remember how long now - pretty much immediately after I heard of it - what made the "switch" easy was the ability to search google (and a slew of other search engines and websites) from the ddg interface using the bang notation. So I have been mainly using ddg the past few years, but when I'm "sure" I would get more relevant results from Google I just add !g to the query and go look there.

I agree it's not ideal - and this is pretty much just a ddg "ad" - but it's a start. The beauty of free software (free as in beer) is that you can just use it all. Yes - again - not ideal, but it's a start.

Why though? Why is that requirement there? Okay, it's nice for me to sync everything and have a seamlessly integrated ecosystem. But what if I have one device and just want to use Word on it and that's it?

It would just outlaw the easiest way to insure an IoT device is easily controlled and authenticated.

In what ways? I would be inclined to agree on some level, seeing what the state of most social media is, but some examples are always useful.

You can set some flags in about:config to make the UI more compact:

browser.proton.enabled to false browser.uidensity to 1

Thank you for this. While searching I also found `browser.uidensity`. Setting it to 1 makes the whole UI more compact, which gives some more vertical pixels for the website window.

I recently decided to get a Note again for the S-Pen experience, but I keep seeing the ReMarkable mentioned and I'm considering it, but I can't really justify it since I don't actually write that much, I just like the idea of having "electronic paper". What would you say about the device?

Recently I started ordering groceries online. I found the site "organically" but searching for products in the space. I found one which satisfied me and stuck with it. Some time later I start getting Ads in Facebook Messenger for the website. Yes, not totally irrelevant, but it's like seeing a billboard for the supermarket you're on your way to.

But those two services are not the internet as a whole. The internet is just the medium, unfortunately it has been taken over by a handful of private organisations.

We have created a plethora of different functional vaccines, however as you said due to logistics there isn't a plethora of choice for "end users". I could've taken the AZ vaccine, but decided to wait for an available mRNA and it looks like that wont be soon.

The reasons for the difference as pointed out by the parent comment are valid and are what is making the interactions different, but I think it might not be "fundamentally". I can also choose which comments I respond to, which conversations to interject in, although it is a markedly different and easier experience to do so - online it's as easy as closing the tab or scrolling to another comment. Offline I need to not only ignore a comment/person, but also keep in mind a variety of other factors which don't exist online. Something that will always be lacking offline though is the infinity of possibilities.

Intentional would be the key word. Would it be easy to prove it was intentional?

How is halting trades the same as only halting buys? By halting trades it is implied selling is also halted.

This is a valid argument, which leads me to the thought that the laws need to be updated. I personally wouldn't be okay with my own premise. I have a person coming over to clean, but I am always home and I can check if I am worried about something.

Just change the hypothetical into: "Would you give me your home address and keys so I can drop off a newspaper on your coffee table each morning?" Yes, it's a bit long, but it takes into account your concern of giving data and not receiving anything in return. And Facebook/Insta/Social media in general is very similar to having a newspaper available at your coffee table each day.

In my view uBlock Origin is the gold standard in ad blockers.

I've been using YouTube Vanced on my Android. I tried NewPipe, but was not impressed with it. Then I went to Vanced not because of the ads, but the looping functionality (which is disabled now for some time) and it's been a great experience so far.
