Layman with absolutely no understanding about any of this.

I currently live in a country with absolutely no infrastructure to handle this. Our first confirmed case was reported almost three weeks ago. Within a week we ran out of testing kits.

Last night I started researching on the topic to see if there is a formula to calculate the current number of infected people in the country. I don't care about accuracy, it just needs to give an approximate.

The current official figure is less than ten and I feel that by having an estimate (from what I've been able to read, time is a bad indicator, it is what it is) it would help change what I believe to be a false sense of security if one is looking at the official figures.

Is there any such formula or should I use the SIR model? (which currently is a bit over my head)

I recently came across the Acer 5, that runs AMD ryzen 3 with 4GB ram at 315$ on amazon. I did a bit of research (and that's my only experience with it) and if budget is a factor, from what I saw you can't beat this one. If you can buy more RAM do it. Make sure to use both slots to activate the dual channel, as it will perfor better.

I managed to find a post from someone that has installed Linux on it, with no issues. And another that did have issues, but that's probably someone who was quite noobish to Linux.

This is as good a time to vent as any other.

One of the things I find difficult is sharing. Even to close friends, but I don't feel the need to. Maybe I just have been hanging out with the wrong people lately, which I have stopped seeing recently - and to which I have been feeling better since. I'll have to give some thought into the the word "difficult" I decided to use - but I'll leave that for some other time.

I have been teaching myself programming on and off for a few years now. After having had some health issues last year, I ended up five days in a public hospital and stopped programming until earlier this year when I took it up again. The experience in that hospital was bizarrely amusing, but I won't digress. I'm guessing the onset was due to some combination of stress and/or burnout. After the hospital it took months to recuperate.

In that time I didn't have much energy would do some light reading and came across an article, right here on HN about sourdough.

All in all, having a hobby helps. And I'm quite fortunate to have a family that provides food and a roof. But it is taxing on so many levels not to be able to help out, to provide. And with the upcoming holidays it gets hard. It hits me hard.

Right. I picked up programming again earlier this year. Funnily, things started to click. I don't know why, maybe the break helped. Anyhow, looking for jobs is another thing that takes a toll on you. I've never worked in the industry, nor have I had a job for too long. I try to search for jr. jobs and when I do find one, the rejection after rejection does not make it easy.

And despite the sorrow sounding note of this, this is just me venting to strangers on the net. And by the age of the thread, few people will read, if any at all.

I stopped talking to the few acquaintances. People who weren't contributing anything positive in my life. And I have to say, I have been more productive since.

I'm currently learning django. Reading Eloquent Javascript and practicing my vim skills - which I took up recently out of necessity. Funnily I found myself trying to use vim keybindings last time I opened up Visual Studio Code.

And that's not to mention all the other tabs that are open. A back-burner of things I want to learn.

Things may get tough, as they always will. But it's all about knowing when to slow down. Take a deep breath, and every now and then, vent.

Stripe is one of many services I would like to use but can't because they simply don't work in my country. There are a few blogging sites (their names escape me at the moment but are similar to https://write.as) that seemed interesting. Again, I did a quick search but couldn't find the one I had in mind.

My preference is python, so naturally I looked there first. I can't remember what happened to pelican, why I didn't go for it. Nikola seemed nice until I started reading the documentation. I also looked at some that were further down static gens list. But something was missing.

Jekyll has great documentation, but there are a lot of moving pieces. You can make it into a full fledge website that has a blog, or make it into a blog - quite easily. It seems that whoever states that Jekyll is geared towards creating a blog..... who knows why?!

Played around with Hugo last year and meh...

Now, I don't know how much looking into different ssg influenced the ease it was to pick up eleventy, but it just made sense. It's a bare bones static site generator that - just works. There are several blog posts that will get you up and running quickly. There are several skeleton GitHub repos, some use tailwindCSS, some have netlify Cms already configured, some are plain. Or you can just build your own.

Another I picked it, which is on a personal level. Since it's such a well structured, bare-bone project, its helping me learn/practice JavaScript and it's ecosystem. npm scripts is all you need.

All the other tools, gatsby, etc - are great if you already understand react. And even if you don't but are interested - I got the impression (gatsby at least) that it's documentation was good and you could learn a great deal about react going through it. Maybe, I don't know.

Finally... I feel that some projects could do with an overhaul, at least with their documentation. Some parts felt like an afterthought instead of one cohesive, linear explanation. Not an easy task in the least, but what is?

But more importantly, pick one thing and stick to it (unless it proves to be hindering productivity).

I just use pythons integrated venv and pip, which work fine for me. However, it was in that same thread (the link posted in this comment) which suggested poetry and another I believe, which I do feel like trying out.

I just started playing around with ruby (on rails) a few days ago and there is something I found frustratingly refreshing (I consider myself a Jr.) in comparison to python. The directory is Ruby's virtual environment. End of story. I was awed and mildly cursing at the same time.

It's hilarious. Facebook misbehaves like a three year old and lies to your face about it. Fifteen years later and the same dysfunctional relationship continues. In a few days, in a couple of weeks there will be some post from their engineering department regarding some fantastic thing they are working on, they released, whatever. And this hate love debate will dissipate to the far end of your minds. When will you say enough?

It is worrisome that current, and future "leaders" are discussing the ethics and other nuanced nitpickings.. as if this were a debate class. There should be one - correct - answer.
