What you want to do is encrypt/anonymize per user information using a translation layer that also gets backed up. In case of a gdpr request, you delete this mapping / key and voila: data cleanup. The backup data becomes unusable.

But this obviously means building an extensive system to ensure the encoded identifier is the only thing used across your system (or a giant key management system).

In the past I’ve been a part of systems at exabyte scale that had to implement this. Hard but not impossible. I can see how orgs try to ‘legalese’ their way out of doing this though because the only forcing function is judicial.

Engineers in Meta have advanced technology in so many ways (buck / react / so many contributions to distributed software / leveldb …). I think it is very reductionist to discount all that work.

There’s nothing about salary depending on it here: there’s a ton about your work contributing to the global good irrespective of who’s funding it (and whatever ways they end up utilizing it).

It is a very tricky philosophical question you’re asking: should you consider the broadest impact of what you’re doing OR should you ensure you’re doing good work and leave the ramifications to higher up decision makers?

The former approach means you can’t do anything with clear conscience: do you take that vacation or donate the money? Do you punish yourself if your work on databases eventually was used for a scam?

I find it paralyzing to operate in the former way: so I take the traditional stem person approach. I just ensure what I do is good (obviously for the highest bidder). I won’t work for an explicitly criminal organization - but as long as the government approves, am in. I am going to let them do the policy making and governing because frankly I am tired and probably incompetent at that since I don’t sink much time thinking about it.

At 30 min limit - you’re stuck to something at home. I’d suggest pick the cardio you least hate, buy the home equipment version of it, put it in front of a tv and add it to your daily habits!

I’ve never loaned money to folks who I don’t have a strong relationship with. Extended Family has found this out the hard way. On the other hand - I’ve never thought twice about money transactions with closer friends. Obviously they value the relationship the same as I do. I’ve had friends loan me 5 digits for a couple of days because my Schwab didn’t settle in time and I wanted to close a property. We’ve have done so many vacations with friends where thousands are transacted and settled. It seems weird that you’d special case money alone.

I think that’s any close relationship: the internets like to say if you don’t get 50/50 - hit the lawyer, but reality is it is never 50/50. You won’t be in any long term relationship if you don’t accept that.

I think the steps under https://ohshitgit.com/#accidental-commit-master are wrong: it reverts the commit on the new branch -NOT on the master. This is because git branch auto checks out the new branch. You need to do

git branch NEWBRANCH

git checkout master

git revert —hard HEAD^

If you want to continue working on the new branch you do

git checkout NEWBRANCH

So cyclists measure their capability in terms of FTP - essentially what power output they can maintain at full throttle for an hour.

This hugely depends on body weight / gender / training levels etc., body weight being a big deal since that’s what you’re transporting. So the other way folks measure output is W/kg of body weight.

A beginner adult male will be in the 100-200W zone, around 0.5-1.5 W/Kg. Usually anyone can train themselves into the 200-300 (3-4 W/Kg) zone which is the recreational pace - the groups of cyclists you see on the road. Beyond 300 ftp (150lb body weight) (4-5 W/kg) you’re reaching race pace. The ones you see on screen have upwards of 5-6 W/Kg FTP output. They obviously have other constraints around putting this output at the end of a 200km ride for 20 mins etc as well, which makes it extra hard.

Finally we come to the KW numbers - all these folks have two kinds of muscles (fast twitch and slow twitch). The sprinters are saddled with a higher proportion of the kind of fibers that can allow huge spurts of power - they put out about 1000-1500W for about 5-10s. These are probably what you’re thinking of. This is pretty much an end of ride (or a sprint section) empty your tanks effort.

Semi related tidbit: track cyclists are a middle kind of beasts here: they put 600-1000W for a couple of minutes but don’t have to worry about riding 200kms to get there.

I think you’re forgetting natural talent (it is their Acceleration to your velocity), commitment, energy, lack of distractions, luck and so many other things you can’t account for. Feeling left behind is inevitable even if you’re on the top of one field - there are going to be others you’re not at the forefront of. The billionaires pay a ton of money to play tennis/golf for example - ask them how they feel when they watch pga/open events.

The crux of the answer is making peace with getting left behind and constructing meaning where you’re. Or use that as motivation. In a connected world the Jones are way too many in number to match and exceed.

I think we as humans need to and will find the ability to have a thick skin for this. We have had to historically build resistance to various distractions - this is just the latest where all the celebs are very interested in making you feel like they are regular humans as well and what they do is very much achievable for everyone: in short it isn’t and we just need to get with the program.

Fwiw it is not necessary to throw your college scores to actually learn as well: they just feel orthogonal sometimes. You can do both!

I don’t know about you - but am a regular reader on fatfire fwiw and I do find my life immensely meaningful. I like finding goals, working towards them and possibly achieving them even (sometimes) or refocusing again. I look at the human experience as the meaning. Money definitely allows for varied experiences while I can pawn away the grunt work of living. Take it for what you will!

Wealth preservation is something that doesn’t get talked about - imo this is what the rich kids should be schooled in assuming they aren’t good enough to multiply their wealth like Elon. They keep it together for a future generation to take advantage of.

What do you do when the management comes in late but demands a recap lol. Fwiw I have seen folks who say they don’t but rekindle a lot of discussions directly / indirectly and do it anyway. Obviously none at our current company - my team does slack daily updates.

IOW - I see a lot of efforts at ‘curtailing’ mgmt powers. In my experience- Bottom up management or manipulation only goes so far - that’s not far. Pick your managers people. You want nice ones who also know how to hire well.

That was my first post in this thread - so I don’t know which previous one you’re referring to.

I don’t know how you expect a pure consumerist class be able to exist alongside a productive class - sooner or later the productive class is going to want to distinguish itself, pushing the consumerists down far enough. The consumers are gonna want the latest gadget eventually - they’re not gonna be ok just with basic food / shelter, which’s going to only keep raising the bar of what the consumers are entitled to - which essentially means the society isn’t going to function. Nobody wants to keep paying for some no name set of folks to keep mooching off them and worse getting the same lifestyle for free.

So the only way I see a pure consumer setup working out is where you’re zombied out or made into a pet. Or I see that as the end result.

I think almost all the innovations exist because of hard work. My above point addresses why folks want their whole society to be productive - so everyone works / contributes the best they can. It could be a doctor / nurse / janitor / manual labor / line cook feeding them / day care employee etc.

Re why not allow for folks to become pets: I hate to Godwin this argument, but I don’t think our society is going to make peace with that ever. Even the existence of a higher race will change the equation completely up side down for us - forget about them harnessing humans as pets. There have been way too many lessons from slavery for this to be acceptable.

Re why is innovation a moral good: we either move forward and harness nature or it harnesses us. Just like how covid emerged - there are always new challenges. Eventual the sun is going to go nova - we need to be off this solar system long before that. However you want to think - be in short or long times, we need innovation. I think stagnation / advocacy for the same is actually a moral bad because it dooms humanity’s future.

Note: you might be referring to a very minimalistic homeless lifestyle when you mean a pure consumer sector, in that case - that exists now. We will continue to take care of folks who choose that (or unfortunately forced into it) with increasing quality over time, but that will never be looked upon as a positive thing. It is always going to be a something to avoid - there is always going to be a stigma and danger surrounding the same. I am hoping that’s not the argument you’re going for.

What if it is because I want to live in a productive society?

I believe innovations come only from a productive society. The day we become wall-E characters is the day either AI has taken over or an Alien overlord has taken over. Then humans will go the way horses did - become pets and vanity objects. This also means the number of humans will go down the same way inevitably.

I am not going to take up the socialist vs capitalist fight, I am very wary of the impacts of a huge consumption only society.

IMO - your reaction here would be very similar. May be you (and your friends) will have the ability to peacefully coexist OR you split up. It is harsh - but the friends who have remained from my poorer times are the ones who are able to be happy with the ups and downs. Some were lost along the way. I have tried and helped some as well - but that again requires a mindset that will allow you to take or give without issues. I will probably hire friends as well in the future - but probably only the ones who can handle it (am assuming I can) will last I guess. C’est la vie.

The tough part is - as you diverge in wealth in either direction, your focus and problems change with it. It is easy to think rich people have no problems - but in reality they have rich people problems. They do want to discuss these. They do want to enjoy their new found wealth with others. Sometimes it is just not possible to keep an open mind through all these - so we move on.

Eve had a huge grind situation at least when I played it 10 odd years ago. You need to skill up, make isks, buy fancy ships and blow em up. I guess you could putter around in a tiny beginner ship - but considering there wasn’t much dog fighting skills involved, it was lame. You could build a corp - again need isks.

At least theoretically loops at these levels try to gauge what you've seen in your career and how you have grown from it, possibly try and project to what you would do in the current situation. I am sure there are folks who game this by reading blogs and leetcoding away, but there is a lot of survivor bias in those statements. Most of the time, folks have their bullshit radars up high for higher level interviews and this is hard. I wish I had some kinda stats on how hard though :/

When I was younger, I used to be my full passionate loud self at office. But again that was early 2000s, so I was able to get away with saying stuff that weren't even close to PC.

Nowadays, the church of social media is very strong. I also believe there is a critical and analytical eye being cast towards all actions, both good and bad. A lot of judgment is made based on actions rather than intent. Overall I think it is good for the society to highlight the stuff we used to brush under the carpet before, but I don't think it is good for me to get involved in that. The same way I believe government should govern, I believe HR and management should handle non-work things at work.

I personally remain very non-controversial, I try to be sensitive of current issues and steer clear. I don't engage in non-work topics at work and all of my friends I hangout with off-hours are not my colleagues. I do have a bunch of personal friends from earlier employments, but this pattern has fallen off. I can probably blame my age and family situation for this (no time for socializing outside the already existing circle, not to mention the new relationships that my wife/daughter bring in from school/neighbors/clubs etc). Rarely there are some folks who pierce through this solid wall I keep for myself, those friendships I treasure.

This works just fine - and of all the models I have tried, this is the one I recommend the most.

TL;DR - Don't be yourself even if the company is very accommodating, bring your best polished self. You want to be known for your work rather than as the 'XYZ' guy.

Unless we go back to a world of strong nationalistic sentiment where customers are willing to put their money towards’Made in USA’ - I don’t know how this gets solved. Bezos famously said ‘nobody wants to pay more for a thing’ (paraphrase).

I switched to an ultra wide for the same reason and haven’t looked back. With the right windowing software and Mac desktop, it is the best of both worlds depending on what I want (centered ide, centered terminal with multiple tabs, split browsers, split chat and email etc).
