Wow! I didn't know that cmd + number switches context of spotlight. Amazing tip, thank you!

perceptual psychology research in AR and VR too

That sounds interesting, would you mind sharing where would you point me if I wanted to follow up with latest research?

Something like arxiv but for psychology? Unless it' only in the magazines ("Psychology today")? I'd be happy to hear the magazines names too, if you'd be so keen to share.

Thank you very much!

let me know if you'd like an invite. I'd like one :) Tried googling you as per profile to msg, but most of your social profiles are under verification before communication, so I'd ask here too, how could you send me an invite?

Does this script work for you? I installed in FF and tried on 3 sample links and none of them produced the extra link :/ Icon in Greasemonkey shows that scripts recognized URL and was running on each site

There are some good news on this front. Recently, ByteDance (owner of TikTok) acquired Pico, Chinese Occulus-style headset. I have their hardware and it's not on the same level as Quest - yet - but getting close. They also have a couple of great solution that Quest was lacking: balancer in the back, eye tracking in newer headsets. I hope now that they have bigger cash stacks, they can spearhead a competition race.

(it also makes sense, as Quest doesn't work in CN due to blocked FB)

DJI FPV 5 years ago

Anectodal data point, if that helps, tested with 3 people

I own Quest and DJI FPV system (not the drone from the link, but custom built with DJI FPV googles)

- I can get dizzy in VR, but I won't in FPV unless I do a lot of crazy movement like spinning for a couple of seconds. Even when crashing which involves a lot of spin, it's fine - If I watch FPV while someone else is flying, I feel dizzy. It's not as fast as in VR, but still can happen

Friends who tried had the same feeling.

There's something in the connection between visual movement and your control of that movement via stick that helps alleviate dizzines.

Hope that helps in case you were wondering!

Could you link to a source about that dsp being specifically used for hand-tracking? My quick google didn't found a result that could confirm that and it would explain a bit. Thank you!

"Another thing they got right was urban planning. Communist built residential areas had all amenities within walking distance."

Interestingly, what I noticed if you look at current high rise developments in Asia (China, Malaysia, Singapoure), they design something similiar (albeit commercial). The ground floors of the 20+ building will be a 2-3 floors of commercial space, hosting a shopping mall, cinema, gym and a bunch of other places. You can go down and do your grocery shopping in pyjamas.

If that could include mandatory social places (school, kindergarden), you'd end up with similar zones like what you are describing.

The article sounds like an ad, and 2 out of 3 games listed doesn't sound like anything new.

That being said, I think what is being said is that these 3 mechanics in the games are particulary suited to improve your brain activities.

The 3rd game is reimplementation of one of the games that is proved to improve your cognitive abilities - and I'm sorry, I cannot remember the name - which was about forcing your brain to work on disonnanced tasks.

I've skimmed the description of the repo and it does look unrelated. The paper uses depth information while the repo is focused on color balance. The paper mentions this is inaccurate way of fixing the colors as the color information changes with distance too.

We have the same experience, our rating while in Asia was around solid 4.6 while after 3 months in Europe went up to 4.85. Our guess is that in EU, people tend to either give 5 stars or no rating, while in Asia if we had a bit worse ride, we and people around us had no hesistation of leaving 3 or 4 star review.

I have similar experience as other commenters, tried TikTok, found it very boring and silly. But then I tried the original, Chinese version (Douyin) and the quality of the content there is so much better than TikTok.

You can actually see a lot of gifs right now on reddit being taken straight from Douyin because that's where cool/fun stuff is being created.

To compare with Vine - by not having time limit, I was able to see the 30sec video of how too cook one of the Chinese dishes, or 1 minute video of a metal welder creating one of his metal sculptures.

It's extremly addictive I think, because content might be realy short or quite-but-not-too long.

I'm trying to say in a roundabout way that Douyin content is miles ahead of TikTok content. I haven't seen too much of the TikTok's girls seeking attention content issue.

I kind of agree with a harsh, strict punishment for the "crime" like this in country where train travel is abundant and often very crowded. There are many people who would be willing to pay the fine on top of the price of the standing ticket (the sitting ones are sometimes very very, very hard to get), while not being able to use trains again would definitely stop people from having an attitude of "I have money and you cannot do anything to me"

Books I Recommend 7 years ago

I really like theirs newsletter, helps me to notice interesting topics I have missed and over the time highlights books that appear as recommended. That's how I finally started reading "Why we sleep", which I thought will be boring but is very entertaining.

A counter article, to keep the dangers into perspective:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/12/11...

If you have nerves to see it, the video of him losing the grip and falling is available online (sorry, I won't link here) and it's nerve-wracking terrible. How he struggles to climb back, just to let go... I only saw it because I didn't know at that time that he fell to his death.

From personal (anecdotal) experience, after videos of the person from huckmagazine went viral - Shangai Tower, Hong Kong - a lot of Chinese started to do the same, plainly risking their lives to be cool.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say, maybe that it's all awesome until someone dies.

I would like to ask about what bothers me after trying such services in China (stationless bikes), in Shenzhen:

How will you address annoying parking?

I've noticed that people in China really quickly realised how free is "stationless" and you would see those bikes parked in middle of roads, in middle of walking paths, dumped in bushes - just because you can. At one point I saw some foreigner (so not to say only Chinese do it) arrive at Starbucks, stop his bike just in front, lock it and go inside.

I found the idea really great but that kind of overtaking of shared space is quite disturbing.

I think that's the W1 chip reference - when you have multiple devices signed to one iCloud (mac, iphone, ipad?) you pair with one of them once, then for other devices they are "just there", in list of available devices. You don't need to separately pair with each one. Tiny but useful. Other than that they are normal BT headphones (I believe)

The "usb-c female to other usb is not permitted" surprised me so I started searching why might be the reason. I've found this g+ post [1] which sheds a bit of light. It's actually good to know as I would've assumed that's ok to have this kind of connector. Probably is, if you know what you're connecting together. Btw you can buy those cable in Amazon :) [2]

Sadly, looks like all comments misunderstood your question :(

I was searching for something like that too, but I didn't found anything interesting. Only usual repeat-until-you-remember style games, like famous now duolingo. No real games using what you're trying to learn as main mechanic to encourage learning :(

That's because you have to actively ask for it. If you don't, they never (almost) give it to you, as business buy those fapiaos from gov.

We asked for them quite often and they gave them each time. Total, we won 2 cans of Coke and maybe 10 yuan :)

Fun fact - fapiaos you get might be fake. Once I got fake fapiao, printed from fake printer, in fake taxi. I know it's fake because I tried to validate it online (there's service for that) after I noticed I got fake bill :/

Same here. Home connection has problems, sometimes work sometimes don't. Shared coworking space network is borderline unusable. Annoyingly, TM customer service does not inform that there's issue with cable and they tell you to "restart router for 10 minutes" :x

Offtopic a bit, but (since couple of days ago we've learned about it) Unifi has promotion now, you can change your 20/20 to 30/10 and pay 180rm instead of 260rm per month. Depending of your needs (we didn't need 20 up) you might find it interesting :)

I think parent specifically mentioned that just IBAN is enough which sounded very unprobable for me. Another comment explained that it's possible but in very specific accounts.
