Generator attached to the flywheel instead of the starter motor, and then find some way to squeeze a drive motor by the rear diff (probably more complicated, but surely not impossible).

Some vehicles have this as a “battery starter generator” where the “hybrid” functionality is entirely on the accessory belt.

I was thinking of a “feature” on manuals that ran electrical and accessory-belt stuff full blast during engine braking.

The best time to run your a/c or turn the seat warmers: when you’re trying to expel energy.

Would give you some extra braking without heating up the engine and take a small load off your brakes.

That or turn any vehicle into a mild plug-in hybrid for all electrical loads and flywheel the alternator until that time. Gasoline-powered generators are not very efficient.

Might get a few percent extra efficiency without having to touch anything mechanical.

Similarly some AV software would “listen” to your IRC comms to check for c&c indicators which meant you could paste it into a channel and a pile of people would disconnect (and you’d be quickly banned).

That’s me. I’ve gone through $2 on deepseek in a month as i’m doing 1 project.

Same for washing the panels. Could even work a system onto already-running trains.

And the RightOfWay is already maintained to keep thin grasses & trees away that may fall on a line.

Often the line is already built-up for flood prevention.

In some (most? All?) countries, the railway has free reign and doesn’t need to answer to city/municipal/states/provinces for approvals on anything.

A main “downside” is the poor production in winter/mornings/evenings on ground-parallel panels. e.g. France has huge solar capacity, they tend to be heavy electricity exporters in summer and heavy importers in winter. One of their new tariffs offers discounts except for 22 days in winter.

Then you get situations like a last minute (ie: knew 30 days in advance) trip from Munich to Berlin where we found it cheaper to rent a newish mid-range Mercedes and it for two.

Can give it some pseudo-code type of prompt. There are probably better ways to do it but this requires less cognitive load/skill for most.

Heh, some landowner near me owned a piece of contaminated property. Technically worthless but was getting some lease money for a shop on the property. I think their game plan was for the city to grow and it being valuable to excavate one day for a condo or other building. Soil remediation is a lot cheaper when you dig anyway.

My dad realized that instead of paying the high rail rates past Thunder Bay, oats could instead be loaded into a Great Lakes freighter designed to haul iron ore pellets (like the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald). Lake freighters typically unloaded their cargo in Thunder Bay and had to sail empty to pick up more iron ore on the U.S. side of the border. If you could fill them with oats in Thunder Bay, deliver the oats to Duluth, Minnesota, and then load the oats on U.S. rail lines, you could substantially cut shipping costs.

The fun part about the “upper” Great Lakes is that some ships were built on it that can go through the Soo Locks, but not the Welland Canal. So they’re just stuck there moving ore (and I guess oats).
