This is BS. Netflix pays market rate, the same as the rest of the FAANGS. The only difference is that they pay everything in cash, while the rest of the companies pay a big % in stocks. However, because of the tech bull run of the past decade or so non-Netflix FAANG employees have made significantly more money than Netflix employees.

How is this different to FCM or Urban Airship?

[dead] 9 years ago

My grandparents emigrated from India to Pakistan (~1947, formation of Pakistan)

My parents emigrated from Pakistan to Spain illegally (~1990, I was born in Spain). They almost took one of those boats you see sinking in the Mediterranean these days, eventually they found another route.

My parents (+ my siblings and I) moved from Spain to the UK (2005)

I emigrated from there UK to the States (2014).

I've also moved cities within these countries.

I consider myself from planet earth, period.

Today I work at Google working on a product that affects 1B+ users.

The Better platform gets around half a million learning actions every week and it has been running for well over a year with no downtime or maintenance. We still don’t know of any bugs.

I'm guessing people use your learning software during weekdays and working hours (5 days and 8 hours/day). That's 3.4QPS. How many machines are you running on?

Also, I'm really shocked to hear you've not encountered any bugs. How many humans are using your systems? A scale is good enough (100s, 1000s, 10000s?).

I recently came across getprove when looking for no. verification. I always wondered why anyone would use it when there's cheaper options (nexmo, twilio, etc).

I also thought that since this more expensive service exists, perhaps it's worth building my own wrapper around twilio and provide a single service that does 1 thing and does it simply just like you do.

Which service are you wrapping for getprove?

Edit: Just saw at the bottom of the page that you're using twilio :)

What is more depressing than OP is the HN crowd agreeing or saying how "programming is a dead job" and "it's easy" (see @okyup's comment).

These are what you call script kiddies who create CRUD apps and pretty UIs. I'll probably get downvoted by the hoards of script kiddies. I mean c'mon, these are the same kids ranting about how their world coming to an end with the whole left-pad fiasco.

"up your title by 2" means nothing at all. 25% pay is a good enough reason, BUT! Do you currently enjoy your job/team/manager? If the answer is a definite yes, then stay. 25% is not worth the risk of going to a crappier team.

What you want to do is become a better software engineer, the title & money will come by itself.
