I noticed it freezes up on me sometimes when I open it. I assume something is blocking instead of being asynchronous when it pings their servers, but instead of waiting to dismiss a loading screen it just shows the full app and like freezes.

I’ve noticed this too with ChatGPT. I’ve been using Claude to help with coding tasks and feel it’s much better, but it has a lower limit even with paid before it will make you wait. So I use ChatGPT for brainstorming and thinking through problems.

I feel like Amazon is so shady nowadays. I ordered a CD drive a while back just incase I needed it, and the brand/seller included a thing to get a gift card if leaving a review. I thought that was a little unethical, like a bribe so I mentioned in the review giving them like a 3 star if I remember. The next day Amazon disables my ability to leave reviews on that seller, and anytime I go review other sellers my reviews are held for review when they used to be instant from what I remembered, unless they changed it for everyone.

The U also has one of the top video game development programs too. I decided to go back to college in my late 20s and doing that program now. It used to be part of the film school, then they moved it to the college of engineering but I heard from a progress or in July they are suppose to expand to being their own school at the U, because there’s a lot of overlap with programming, art and business (they use the term “Producer” for project managers). But apparently the program is growing and they want to offer more classes covering the entire spectrum but the people in charge of whatever college they have been apart of have been limiting what they could offer, or so I’m told from a professors Rant.

Disappointed:( I am starting to hate when hosting related stuff gets acquired. For example I pay for a cPanel license, used to be $15 now it’s $40+ a month with tax. Kinda makes me think about just going back to shared hosting since not making any money from my server but it is fun to play with and having root if anything messes up.

I would think doing tutorials would be a form of fair use under education. Else I guess every university, Lynda, Pluralsight, etc either had to get permission or they would be breaking the law.

I was just skimming over real quick but don’t have to either to read the whole thing. One thing that stood out, is a group can hold another group. So I guess if you had a role like tech support, web development, financial, etc you could make a CEO role that includes the permissions within those other roles? If I am reading that right, never thought about that though. Kinda neat as role reusability.

It was earlier today showing -1 connections for me but still was loading. One of my classes for college are grading us to polish our LinkedIn profile. So the only day I care about spending time on it, it happens to have problems haha.

So funny this pops up. Last few days I've been wanting a new notes app that wasn't using some database and was files based, plus I feel like other notes app rich text copying and pasting notes can be a mess. Plus a bit unorganized so wanted a new notes app and just copy things over as I need. This one looks pretty prefect for my wants.

I also like how it has both folders and hash tags too instead of being forced to pick one over the other.

Did you recently get that domain? Wanted to check it out but my university has it blocked citing malware. So maybe something you'd want to look into.

I guess it's data for the day only, not hourly? I had this virtual world idea, and wanted to make a parody virtual college in it in the future haha. one of the things I was thinking is having a ticker in the business school part of the project or some newsfeeds.

I was thinking it meant WASM on the PlayStation haha. I seen that there's some project before but haven't been following it to use WASM for the binaries on Linux. So ARM or Intel programs could be compiled to WASM and only the host operating system would need to be compiled natively, which sounds like a very cool concept if it gained more support.

If I was Google, I'd just say screw Ohio when considering future expansions. I'd view them as being business unfriendly.

Pretty hostile of Ohio. I feel like the governor and other state leaders are out of touch with tech. Don't know how this could help the state or Columbus attract tech. They should try to learn a lesson or two from Texas or Utah. Idiots running the state will continue the brain drain problem.

I have a startup idea and want to make sure it scales, I was thinking S3 but don't like vendor lock-in. Not that far along yet, I was thinking maybe SeaweedFS or even going crazy enough to write my own storage system. Use a database like CockroachDB or MongoDB to store the meta data, and then replica pieces of the file to "chunk servers". However cleaning up deleted files, etc seem a bit of a pain. I was thinking instead of top down, let each node contain a copy of the metadata and scan on each node individually instead of the central database trying to manage each node. Then have a a process to handle under replicated files. However if you can adjust the number of replicas for say a popular file, you'd need to then coordinate which extra copies to remove when scaling down. Maybe a bit optimistic.

Kinda disappointed the file solutions seem more complicated and nothing more simple to setup like some of the new databases are like CockroachDB or MongoDB are to use. I feel like reinventing the wheel is kinda bad as rather let people who are more experts in this field handle this stuff, but I hate the idea of vendor lock-in and forced to use other peoples servers, self hosting be nice from a single node to test to a cluster spanning multiple datacenters. Maybe there's a solution out there, I done some searching and just seems to go in circles. I seen one system but if you wanted to add or remove nodes in the future, you couldn't just "drain" a chunk server by moving it data.

I stopped getting voicemails too. Someone told me it said my voicemail box was full. No notifications to me. So I was unaware unless someone told me or I call my own number. Using visual voicemail on a iPhone with prepaid service.

Have you thought about doing some open source contributing? Like publish some mini projects or modules, submit pull requests, etc? I think some recruiters scrape GitHub. I know some people get tired of the unsolicited emails from recruiters but in a way it’s kinda nice too sometimes.

Scary! my university uses Microsoft for email, but I think they use the cloud hosted version but wonder how much code is shared between the versions. When I added it to the mail app on my iPhone, it mentioned it could wipe my device. Guess that's a default with the implementation but that is a turn off. So I ended up just installing the Outlook app instead since couldn't find imap support. I feel like on desktop, just using the web version or even adding it to my home screen would be another use but partly was hoping to just have all my accounts together.

Yep, I feel like both Australia and Europe are going backwards. Hope this isn't a new trend, and maybe they'll realize they are making a mistake and turn around. I haven't been following the news much but last I heard Europe wanted link taxes and copyright upload filters.

In America records are pretty much decentralized. If you switched to another dentist, you'd have to get the records from your old one. Same for regular doctors. Usually there's a release to fill out. And not even digital depending on where, some still use paper and pen and a folder.

I think some states started doing vaccine registers for schools and stuff. But if not and say you lose your proof and needed it for say going to another school or college, your option is to get a test if your immune, get it again or an exemption depending on the state... Like California only allows medical, while some states allow religious or personal exemptions.

This seems so dystopian.

So they are just going to some how contact everyone who has an ID? This seems like something that should be between someone and their doctor. If they have one or want one.

Then what about it mutating, are they going to have a new one and do this every year? Don't want to sound like a crazy conspiracy theorist, but I'm skeptical of this whole thing.

Not sure if he was in a position for that. It's not like tech where you can just start coding in your bedroom after work. Psychical products are header and then health permits and stuff. Unless maybe he did it at events and trade shows small scale, but by time he could scale up to be in retail he'd probably be copied anyways if trying to bootstrap. Unless he could seek investments but I guess that depends on who you know. So many business ideas die in the parking lot of a bank.

I watch Shark Tank from time to time and it seems like retail and food is one of the hardest things to get into. slotting fees and can be really low margin too.

So maybe he could of went off on his own and done it, but part of me feels like that's a all or nothing bet. I know personally starting a food brand all by myself is not something I'd even try since it seems like a losing game to me and other businesses would be more suited for me to go after.

Yeah, you have no expectation of privacy in public. However if you go to say Walmart and start recording, they have to right to ask you to leave or stop.

Yeah, sounds like an awkward conversation but I know there's some huge companies using it. I guess they named it that way because cockroaches are believed to survived since the dinosaurs. I guess be the same if you named it BedBugDB, they are hard to get rid for some people too.

But I think some just dismiss it based on the name. I think if I was going to build a startup, it'd be on the top of the list for database choices only thing I really wish it had was Full Text Search and CIText but I guess those will be added some day. I think it's a neat piece of engineering though so far!

Reminds me about how people don't even give CockroachDB a chance because of it's name. Every time it's mentioned on HN, people can't help but to bring up it's name.

I seen that too. PayPal and Stripe on the list also. I think it's just a list of all the providers and software/tools they themselves used. Seems maybe a little misleading, wonder if people might think they are endorsed by Stripe, etc?

Nice! I hope a lot of the major VPS providers end up supporting it like Digital Ocean or Linode, etc. Shame many of them you just can't just upload your own ISO.

I have a project idea I been toying with and my plan was to use CentOS as the base, but the news has been a big disappointment. I'm not too far along though, so switching to something like Debian wouldn't be too hard but I liked the idea of longer stable releases.

Feel like the folks at Red Hat/IBM has stabbed the community in the back, and also wondering about the other projects they support like Podman, etc.

The EOL for CentOS 8 was supposed to be 2029, so people and organizations planned on using it for the stability without needing to worry about major yearly upgrades. So if they take their word back on this project, what about other projects or even paid products by the same company?

Then some were mentioning they waited until CentOS 6 was EOL, so some just skipped CentOS 7 and went straight to 8. Then with COVID shutdowns causing cutbacks and layoffs at places, people might have to upgrade sooner than they'd hope to something else or fork out the money. Seems predatory to me, so I think this move makes IBM look bad. Really hope someone realizes this is a huge mistake and backtracks. Feel like this is something someone in higher management did hoping to increase revenue without thinking about the whole larger picture.

I would think air gapped networks probably ran Linux. But I know I heard once some nuclear power uses Windows, looks like that's in Japan. Kind of doubt people are using Macs in that sort of environment, other than maybe a client machine. Feel like it's either going to be Windows or Linux for more industrial stuff.
