I can only speak for myself. But in now 7 years I never connected a keyboard or mouse to my 2011 MBA. It's keyboard+Touchpad is just so good that I don't need it. Even when I connect to an external display.

I'd say no. In my experience other Companies aren't even able to recreate the smooth surface + 'clicking feel' of the Apple touchpad, which is what I value the most. I suspect that they can, but aren't legally allowed due to patterns.

I wouldn't care about the touch bar if the esc+(sleep key) were still regular hardware keys. Those are the only ones that I actually use.

But an even bigger problem for me is the price increase. The base TB version costs 200€ more (or 400€ if you'd buy the nTB 128gb version). With ne nTB version not getting the update, the updated MBP is too expensive compared to non Apple machienes.

I also tried it, and it didn't work for me. I asked about the error message in the swift forum and got no response...

Using the prebuilt binary for ubuntu with the WSL is WAY more userfriendly.

Another problem problem is proper tooling. So far my experience with the LSP implementation is a bit dissapointing..

I agree, I just had in mind that Apple just now added/announced support for external GPUs. Besides Image+Video edditing, I though general computing tasks is a use case they had in mind. It's not like Gaming is big on MacOS.

I like both Swift and Tensorflow. But how is that going to work?

As far as I understand MacOS has no official Nvidia support (=> no Cuda), which is (at least) advised if you want to use a GPU for computing. Using OpenCL instead of CUDA would require building Tenfowlow from source. The OpenCL support is not as mature as with CUDA, so I imagine you could run into unexpected (performance) problems.

On windows, you have an excelent CUDA but lackluster Swift support.

Will they add OpenCL as a "first class backend" for Tensorflow or rather expect a "first class" support of Swift on Linux and Windows? Otherwise who is going to use it?

I don't think the last sentence is fair to trensorflow. Torch has been around for ~15 years compared to the 3 of TF. You'd expect TF to catch up in terms of performance in the future.

A forward() function gets called when the Graph is run.

Isn't that almost exactly the same in tensorflow? You'd run your model to generate an output, or/and run your optimization operation t optimize the model.

Based on some reviews, PyTorch also shows a better performance on a lot of models compared to TensorFlow.

Citation needed. How good are the examples optimized? What does performance mean? Precision or learning iterations per second?

In the following code (from the linked site): What is embeds_many? Are :string and :map type information or Atoms? What happens to :changes, Change, primary_key? Does the code between do and end just call the field function twice?

I just hope for the one big presentation where they refresh iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, and maybe some "next big thing" for desktop PCs.

And for the love of god, if they do this please have some USB-A ports...

I couldn't find information about the GPU.

It's wired that it's 100€ cheaper than Microsoft's Surface Book with similar specs.

I'd be interested how good the quality is.

It seems wired to think of Porsche Design as a competitor to Microsoft and Apple... You have for example the PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI MATE 9. But it costs 1400€ -> not competitively priced.

I think this is what is most flawed in the paper. For (some) concurrent problems Go is about as fast as C [1].

But then again, I don't know what kind of computing requirements they have. Is there a reason why GRP computing isn't mentioned? They are really efficient and CUDA isn't that hard to learn.

I don't know the astrophysics domain at all but shouldn't there be more arguments for Go?

Is the downside of a GC language really relevant? Does astrophysics suffer from "stop the world interrupts" or is it just because of the performance? The Go GC is already really fast.

You expect people to behave a certain way when you know they won't. Then you let them get to you because you don't stand to whatever you did.

You expected them to compliment you. It means you are proud of what you did. But if you really are proud of what you did you wouldn't care about their opinion in the first place.

So either you are somewhat ashamed of what you did and regret that it became public or wanted to brag with it but are now angry that you colleges made fun of you instead.

Not related to the blog post but why are the websites form lenovo + dell (and acer) so god damn awful?

lenovo.com redirects me to https://www.lenovo.com/se/en/ since i'm currently in Sweden. I then get nice server error as greeting: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.

If I try to access lenovo.de I get often no response... also for subsequent pages...

On dells website it takes an awful lot of time to filter their laptops. It's not even 100 items... why does it take so long?

Acer has a nice compare function. The only problem is that you can't compare laptops of their business line with the home ones. They also have too many different models. The compare function doesn't showcase any difference.

Your argument is also ridiculous.

The biggest difference between a PC and an iMac is the form factor. An windows all-in-one pc with the mentioned specs is probably about as expensive as the iMac (if there even exists one).

It would have been better to compare it to an Mac Pro, which probably would be even more expensive...

As for the general price of apple products, Surface book, lenovo, dell xps (outside of USA) are just as expensive as Macbooks. But sure, you can always get a windows laptop with worse specs or quality.

Don't listen to people telling you dongles and USB-C is bad. It's not bad. It's just the future.

God I hate this argument. Sure it is the future. But what you and other keep forgetting/not mentioning is the fact that USB 2 (type A) isn't going to suddenly disappear. There are just too many use cases where a bigger throughput from USB 3+ isn't needed.

So what do you do? Throw away all usb 2 peripherals? Buy multiple adapters? To think of all the usb sticks that would be basically useless without a dongle...

When apple decided that CD/DVD's are deprecated it was an ok decision because a) Most media can be put on an external dive b) you can buy an external CD/DVD reader. And i think you need an USB-A dongle WAY more often then an CD/DVD drive.

Apple should have just keep 1 usb 3.1 (Type A) port => 1 USB-A + 2 USB-C for the non touchbar MBP. If the macbook would then be a few mm taller, excellent. More room for the battery.

In two years.... so not Today? Because they replaced the USB-A ports today... and not in their 2018 MBP.

Besides, the old peripherals won't disappear within the next few year and most of the world can't easily switch to type-C anyways - since they literally have no money to buy modern technology.

USB 2/3 is "good enough" for too many things to fade away. Any notebook should have 1 type-A port for convenience.
