Highway driving is a bit different from complex city conditions

Fair and valid, but worth noting that these drives are door-to-door, not just advanced highway cruise control.

Any idea where one might find a trusted source for data on the robotaxi performance? Especially curious about the latest self-driving models, rather than historical performance.

We can debate the meaning of “truly autonomous”, but the Tesla-owning friends and acquaintances of mine have all, without any uncertainty, recently commented to me that the top-tier self-driving plan in the modern Teslas is just that.

One frequently uses it to drive from his house in LA to San Jose, another from Philly to Boston, another from Kamloops to Vancouver (Canada). I personally have never experienced it, but I trust their word and experiences enough to believe that it is at an extremely high level of capability.

I suppose if you’re operating on the assumption that tech stocks are vastly overinflated then this makes sense. Otherwise I would expect the people that are regularly buying these securities would be happy that they’re increasing in value, no?

The news article you’ve linked seems to suggest that these scam offset companies may soon be losing their ability to sell their credits.

Carbon offset startups are booming right now, not all of them will succeed, but there are viable technologies already being scaled up. For example, Heirloom Carbon has just made front page news today with a 200 million dollar deal they signed with Microsoft.

All this is to say, I agree that there are some bad actors in the space, and it’s great that they’re being called out for it. To suggest they’re all scams is an unfair, and largely inaccurate statement.

Attempting to summarize:

I’ll second this. It really shines when learning new technologies in a field in which you already have some expertise. Being able to apply the smell test, or quickly validate the output is important.

I haven’t tested this, but I would imagine the type of information you’re requesting dictates the quality of response you’ll get. In my case I use it mainly as interactive documentation for different tooling. Asking it to explain the process for synthesizing new hypothetical polymers likely will not yield useful results.

“Crypto” is a technology that is functional and has proven utility. Those using it as a tool to skirt regulations, defraud others, or to commit outright theft are the scammers. I would agree that as a concept it is generally overhyped, usually by those who seek to profit from doing so. But I think it’s important to not conflate the unscrupulous gold miners looking to get rich quick with the utility of the precious metal itself.

Afaik this has been the behavior of StrictMode since it was introduced in React 16.

One thing that’s called out in the linked docs is that duplicate console.logs were _deliberately_ silenced in React 17. I have no idea what they were thinking when they made this decision, but it sounds like it has been walked back in 18.

Think in terms of stuff. Metal that gets put into Humvees can't be put into something else. We threw away an insane amount of stuff.

Much of that stuff has actually found itself in the hands of those it was made to fight against. This is significantly worse than throwing it away in my opinion.

So there is a big difference between legalization and decriminalization. I was asking about the latter.

While I can see some of the benefits of decriminalization (easier to provide help to those who need it, enforcement can target distributors rather than users, etc), it really just seems like a political half measure to me.

Could you explain how decriminalization helps to defund the cartels?

With legalization comes regulation and better control over the supply chain. I don’t see how decriminalization accomplishes anything other than saving court costs/costs of imprisonment.

I have had a rather non-conventional experience working from home this past year.

Pre-covid, I had my desk lowered to the perfect height (coworkers would joke about how low it was), adjustable seat, monitors aligned with eyes, split keyboard, ergo mouse, etc. Even with all this I would frequently have pain in my shoulder joints and under my shoulder blades (especially when drinking coffee). I stretched regularly, but the only activity I found to really help was boxing.

During the first month of covid I refused to believe it was nothing more than temporary, so I would work from my couch, with laptop on my coffee table, no mouse, laptop keyboard. Sometimes reclining, and supporting myself with blankets/pillows. Surprisingly none of the usual pains came up. This is still how I work day to day.

What’s interesting is I will occasionally play video games with friends on my office PC. When I do this the shoulder pains never fail to come back.

I’ve been considering buying one of those lie-down battlestation type setups, but I probably won’t.

While there may be some strong arguments for the China approach to COVID management, I’m not sure I find your enumerated list of ad-hominem strawmans and head shaking very convincing.

I think you’ve made some valid points in your previous post, but I’m not sure I buy this as a valid argument.

A quick google search tells me that 30.1% of US energy generation comes from coal [1] (at least in 2017), with 62.7% coming from fossil fuels overall.

Unless you’re proposing switching to a ‘cleaner’ fossil fuel source, there’s only so much wind/solar/geothermal can contribute until we see major leaps in the available technologies. Until that time I will continue to view them as a supplemental power source, rather than a primary one.
